Made So Solid Crew into a house hold name and paved the way for another handful of radio hits just like this but prob not as well known or remembered: So Solid Crew - Broken Silence So Solid Crew - Haters So Solid Crew & Ms Dynamite - Envy So Solid Crew - Ride Wid Us So Solid Crew - Oh No (Sentimental Things) So Solid Crew - They Don't Know

The song title alludes to the approximate 21 seconds that each of the band members is given to perform their rap. 21 seconds is arrived at as the song's tempo is approximately 140BPM and each of the 11 so solid members rapper has 12 bars of 4 beats (48 beats at 140BPM, when worked out to the nearest integer, rounds to 21 seconds). It's so solid member Lisa Maffia's daughter laughing at the beginning of the track.

it's 137bpm so it's pretty much bang on 21 seconds, it's 21.02 seconds

Incorrect the tempo is 137BPM. UK radio limit for a song is about 3 mins to 3.30, hence the term radio edit. They worked out how many members were gonna be on the track and divided that by the song limit and everyone got 21.9 seconds.

Before Wiley and Dizzie came on the scene, garage was the big underground sound in the U.K. dominated by london. It was born out of house hence the name garage. Originally it was mostly instrumental but as time went on more and more people started spitting on it. When garage MC's first started spitting on the beats it was usually about partying, gd vibes, stuff for the ladies. Music to dance to. As the scene grew and boomed obviously it got more mainstream attention. See tracks such as Wookie - Battle, Love Station - Teardrops, Wideboys - Sambuca, Heartless Crew - Heartless Anthem, Masters of the Ceremomy - Do you really like it, Future Underground Nation - It's the way, Somore - I refuse, Roy Davies Jr. - Gabrielle, Artful.Dodger - Thong Song Remix. So solid were one of the first crews spitting more real life, street bars reflecting the life alot of young men in the hood were really living. Obviously the government hated it and tried to silence them. They 100% set the bencmark for grime, bare mcs spitting 8 bar verses on one track. Grime came after, Wiley was spittung with Pay As You Cartel and then went off and started making beats at 140bpm putting the snare on the 3rd beat of each bar mostly, changing the swing and vibe of the beats. Where as garage had a snare/clap on the 2 and 4 with the hi hat and rim shot/ghost snare shuffle. Sadly grime took oved and garage went back underground but it's legacy is still strong. So Solid were the catalyst for it.

Another guy who spit a verse was Harvey he has a KZbin channel where he does interviews. He interviews Asher D in one of them and he explains where he came from, how his boys would give him grief of going to acting school etc, a decent watch

what you say about Wiley bring the new sound is true...but you had Garage and DnB(/Jungle) which was very UK sound, So Solid came out of that but when MC's came into it at that point US had huge influence. but you also at this point had the underground UK hip hop scene that was about to pop, and shortly after Grime with the whole London sound & Dub Step which was a south UK thing (mainly Bristol and London) The underground Hip hop Scene actually started very UK and proud, but the biggest influence on it was Wu tang. as far as MC's go It was really what came from Dancehall, DnB and Garage but with lyricism that was present in the UK underground hip hop scene that blended to make Grime. This was the first mega UK sound that was for UK MC's in such a big way. There was some US influence on that, but far less that the UK hip hop scene (which is also fire btw its not all just Grime, we spit over anything from grime hip hop dub to fucking DnB and Techno)

The first real uk rappers were groups like London possee, and hijack who was signed by Ice T. These two groups came out in the middle to late 80's and were obviously deeply influenced by New York rappers of that time such as KRS1, and Public Enemy. The London Posse and Hijack paved the way for groups like So Solid Crew. When speaking of UK female rappers you have to talk about the orginators of UK female rap Monie Love and the Cookie crew, both of which were picked up or collaborated with Queen Latifha again, in the middle to late 80's.

I know this is an old video, but So Solid was where all them started basically. 21 Seconds really popped off in a popular more mainstream way. It's really a little more of a pop vibe, and it shows in the music video. Their first big single was 'Oh No' and check out Broken Silence by them as well. Asha D went on to an acting career. Romeo had a little solo R&B career. Lisa Mafia, i think she did a few songs at the time i think? Nothing special. Mostly So Solid Crew war part of that first wave of a real UK sound that came out of the Garage music scene and paved the way for UK Grime and then UK Drill. So Solid Crew are from South London developed the genreinto Grime which found it's stride in East London with Wiley, Dizzee Rascal, Roll Deep Crew, etc. Most of them ended up with some criminal charges, weapons offences and stuff, and their shows were banned because of gang clashes. But yeah 21 seconds is a funny song because it doesn't reflect that vibe at all. I was just a school kid just vibing to older sisters cassette tape recordings of radio stations. 😂😂

Swiss isn't in this song. The reason they sound weird is because they created a scene out of a different one. Before it was house and garage which had mc's which had very basic lycis but just to hype up the crowd and for then to sing along. This was massive in London and the UK. Much of the music was actually produced in the US. Then young people went to these events and wanted to get involved but the older heads who ran the events (djs and mcs) didn't want young guts getting involved and taking over. However they couldn't stop the sound. So solid created their own radio station and laid a blueprint. Wiley was also there around the same time in a crew called Pay as u Go. Then there was Heartless Crew who were the best djs and mcs who were authentic to the original sound but brought singing and Jamaican influence and more. They were so big they began to headline events as the promoters couldn't say no. So solid got really big, got signed and made a lot of money. Later the sound again changed to a darker sound. There was a split of two sounds. One dark and for mcs, one for dancing and vibes. Wiley went with grime and another sound called Dunster formed more or dancing like drum and bass. Then there were street kids who rapped and didn't like grime which was authentic in sound to the UK but they weren't authentic in the sense they were really about the street life. So then comes Mashtown (hackney) who were really talking about what they were doing. They had a real war with North Star who were from Tottenham where lots of people were killed. So now we have some grime but not as much, mostly we have rap in many forms. Real rappers and ones who are just creating an image to make money. Just like the US. That's the basic history. Need any more info I'll be happy to help.

Solid was the most commercial/recognisable UK Garage group but between ‘99 to ‘01 UK Garage was at its peak!! I was 18 and used to dance all night to these songs!! You’ve got to look up DJ Luck and MC Neat, DJ Pied Piper and the Masters of the Ceremonies, Shola Ama -Imagine, sweet female attitude. Such good tunes!!!

So solid is garage. They're MC's, not rappers. Asher D was in So Solid YEARS before he was in anything acting-wise. I'm 34 & when I was a teenager; this was literally culturally iconic.

Not just american hip hop but bashment, jamaican dancehall..a lot of jamaicans in London and these guys very likely had jamaican parents/grandparents... influenced garage, ska which in turn influenced british rock...the caribbean influence is often overlooked when it comes to pop(ular) music

Most of this genre (Garage) was played in clubs but there were a few that made it commercially in the charts. The Girl is Lisa Mafia. This was a banger in the 00's.

Shout out to Mega who brought up all of his crew buy showcasing their talent and what inner city kids had to offer. When this song hit the UK had seen nothing like it, this was black people truly getting their own voice and style, without being watered down, doing things our way, the black UK way, they only way we knew how! So solid bust down that door for black UK Music and Wiley gave us our Grime sound.

13 man crew, 21 seconds each to get a “perfect” length song. Gotta be early 00’s this and it still bangs over here. “Don’t come off like a UK track” this is old school garage, about way before grime and Drill. Start of it all really. You say about Wiley and Dizzee starting the sound, check there early LOTM and wileys early eski stuff and his group Roll Deep before all the beef kicked off, tracks like “when I’m ere”, “flying away”, “the avenue” and “shake a leg” proper old school UK

Rapper first. this track was huge but 10 years old; first track to jump over the devise from under-arch London clubs to TV & national air play. They were band from performing as the political class said this was angry young men encouraging street violence. Stormy until the last 2 years was blamed literally all knife crime etc. Dizzy came after this, but not to far and also was one of the first single person step’in over the decide of popular culture.

The U.K. took the music from paradise garage way back early and then we started with the U.K.-Garage and 2-Step then moved on to House and Garage then Speed Garage then Bassline House and Organ house then moved on to 4x4 Garage and then the feds shut all the clubs down and banned any clubs from playing that type of music. Gangs, guns, drugs and turf wars caused the problems in the club scene and we lost many a good clubs because of this. Look up Niche Nightclub Sheffield, Casaloco Ladylane Leeds, Boilerhouse Bradaford, Sheridans dewsbury. These are the clubs that started the music scene that drifted through from early 90’s to late 2000’s.
