Why would they speak English in Barcelona? You're in Spain (Catalonia), So surely visitors/foreigners should at least speak & understand the basics of their language. I lived in Granada for over a year and have visited Madrid and Barcelona many times. They are both beautiful, interesting cities, and the people are so friendly. I have many Spanish acquaintances, both male & female. Go to Madrid, honestly you will love it!
