It's a humanoid scavenger. Basically a hairless beast that eats decomposing bodies. They don't attack people, but will defend themselves if cornered. Observers don't know how they reproduce. It would be considered unethical to force a ghoul into captivity again. Just let them eat the corpses, it helps with crop yields.

The most defining feature of a zombie is mindlessness. A ghoul, while described as having an animalistic disposition, also has a degree of cunning at least matching more intelligent animals, in some stories also capable of speech. They really don't have that much in common. A ghoul didn't used to be human, is not undead, mainly comes out at night. The only real overlap is the corpse eating but that is also only surface-level similar. A zombie doesn't really need to eat, it's already dead. Attacking, biting and eating seems more like a basic remnant of instinct. A ghoul will dig up the recently buried to feed on, and only prey on the living if they follow it into the desert or wander off. It's more similar to a vampire really, in that it is intelligent and supernatural but still require sustenance or they wither to an emaciated, almost skeletal form, which is how they are often depicted. A ghoul might be considered a lesser form of djinn, and in Islamic mythology is similarly described as having a level of autonomy that a clever enough scholar might actually be able to convert one to Islam.

I used to think Lovecraft's description of a Ghoul was pretty wild but it sounded just like that guy in the first mythology video described. With the hair, and the hooves, and the dog like head, and the running on 4 legs but walking on 2, and killing and eating humans (only eating carrion when starving). I've always thought that ghouls are more alive than zombies. They're able to think and plan, but they're driven by their insatiable hunger causing them to eat just enough anything that they can get their hands on. They're able to disguise as humans, but that usually ends quickly because of their hunger and impatience. As for physical description, think of a really pale bald human with lots of sharp teeth and long clawed fingers. They look malnourished, except for their stomachs which can temporarily swell after a large meal.

I always thought a Ghoul was a zombie, but made by Vampires. Like, there is the hierarchy of Vampires and shit, elder vampires, greater vampires, lesser vampires, but each of them can choose to impart a small portion of power onto a human, and depending on the power given, you get a Thrall, which is just a human, but serves its vampire lord, and then there is a Ghoul, which is an opportunistic carnivore, and will eat corpses if presented, but will attack people and eat them if they find them. A normal zombie is a virus or some shit, while a Ghoul is a "Zombie" in that it acts like a zombie, but is created by Vampire power.

Historically the word ghoul has been used in English speaking countries to refer to a person who robs graves to eat the corpses. In modern terms it's typically used to refer to the D&D monster, which is a form of territorial undead with limited intelligence that eats corpses. They typically don't eat living people, but their bite can cause a person's body to whither and atrophy until they die, becoming the desiccated corpses they prefer. It's funny how a thing can become a certain way and everybody thinks it's always been that way, but if you look at the history it's been radically different in the past.

Erik has just entered the world of mythology, where he has yet to learn that the more you dig into each monster the more they all seem pretty much interchangeable. Monsters have what's called "cluster properties". Since they don't exist, they're subject to folklore, and since folklore is an endless game of broken telephone everything just takes on cool traits from other stories the people heard. Is an elf tall or short? What's the difference between a hobgoblin and a brownie? Is a dragon a lizard, a snake, or a giant turtle? Depends who is telling the story.

If you like to read tomes the book "The dictionary of Mythology is full of good starting points. If you prefer talking with people about stuff, I recommend going on to DND or Pathfinder forums and asking there, plenty of the monsters derive from folk law or the like. Finally, while i'm by no means an expert, the kind you seam to be looking for are the post trauma kind of cryptid. Searching along those lines might give you the results you are looking for. I thought a ghoul was like the victim of a vampire who's had all of their blood drained, so they're weak and don't get all the powers of a vampire. It's different to a zombie because zombies die first and are resurrected, and they rot and aren't really alive. Whereas ghouls are just half-alive. Might still drink blood and eat flesh, can't imagine one eating a burger really. Vampire minions

Oh? I've only ever heard that term used to refer to a slave or someone who works for a king. never in a mythological context. Where have you heard/read it used like that? Anyway yeah, ghoul is a pretty hard one to pin down, but i've definitely seen it more used in the vampire scenario, i think it works better than vampires cronies being called mere zombies or "lesser vampires", because that either trivialises zombies or makes vampires seem less special

My fav part about this is not only is VHS 94 no longer on Shudder, but the whole series isn't on it anymore. Shudder is the ONLY streaming service that constantly picks up and drops half it's titles every month lol. October usually has the least amount of titles too lol
