Rogena, I very much appreciate your education & advocacy. ❤️ So important and I am grateful. I hope the world will begin to see less of the spiteful harassment, ignorance, and misinformation as can be seen in online comments to intersex advocates like you (and anyone who doesn’t conform to gender binary assumptions), who are willing to speak publicly. Please remember those people are not everyone. Your matter & you are making a difference.

I can’t believe I’ve gone 60 years of my life and did not know about intersex people. How has this not been discussed over the years?

You are precious in every way and I am truly sorry you have had to go through this. It’s confusing to those who don’t know. If you had not stood on that stage and taught us we would never know.

Should we do away with calling these variations “disorders” or “syndromes”? Maybe something like Intersex variations would be better. The particular variant could be listed in the doctor’s notes so that the child and their parents know exactly what their variant is for the purposes of future unrelated surgeries and to inform them about their possibilities for reproduction should they wish to have children as adults. For the purposes of filling out forms and birth certificates we definitely need 3 boxes - maybe there will be more than 3 needed in future. but 3 boxes regarding gender on every form one has to fill out - and there seem to be a lot as one goes through life. Also when gender is not important eg. When applying for a job, then perhaps people should have the option to NOT to specify their gender. A bit like Ms can represent a single woman, a married woman or a woman in a long-term committed relationship (and not necessarily with some one of the male gender) This whole system of identifying one’s gender when it’s irrelevant needs to be revised. Luckily a lot of forms are now filled in online, so it wouldn’t be that difficult to add a 3rd (or 4th) box. I can’t think what would require a 4th box, but Mother Nature is very creative and there could be something else I haven’t considered more poor children or adults hiding their natural variant because it doesn’t fit one of the gender boxes on some form. I’m sure that there are a lot of forms which we have to submit throughout our lives, which ask us to tick a gender box when it’s irrelevant. If they are on a computer one can’t even leave a box unchecked or the program won’t let one proceed to the next page. We need to fix this.
