Love seeing your take on the freeways around my hometown (props for taking the 11 Mile Rd exit as well). And no kidding on the "plagued by problems" in that project. The prime contractor on that job was trying to squeeze every last penny they could get out of their paver which probably caused the roughest inlay job in the state. We practically diamond grinded the entire eastbound side which I've never liked on new concrete pavements. Even the Hoover Rd on ramp at ~6:03 that was graded too high which resulted in guardrail being erected there that was not originally in the plans. All in all, I'm not a fan of how this job turned out since I use this freeway the most. Sorry for the rant on this one, but as always, great video!

I didn't follow the I-696 project too closely aside from the fact that the highway was closed for a really long time, and almost didn't re-open in time for the winter shut down. When I filmed this, I was surprised at how much work was still ongoing a year following the major works. Thanks for the comment.

I-696 is an auxillary route of I-96 and forms a northern bypass of Detroit.

The tunnels and sunken part were a very neat stretch. Detroit freeways always seem to surprise me. Great work

I really enjoy driving through Detroit. I quite like the pattern that was embossed on the concrete walls in the depressed section. Thanks for the comment.

I couldn't help but notice that many metro Detroit freeways (mainly in the inner suburbs, and especially inside Detroit proper) use frontage roads, or "service drives" as they are known locally. Detroit is probably one of the few North American metro areas outside of Texas with fairly extensive frontage roads. Unlike many Texas freeways, there doesn't seem to be extensive commercial development along metro Detroit's frontage roads.
