While 'control cities' are, of course, the main point of this channel, I find it's been a fun experience getting to know the different parts of America seen from its interstate highways. For example, many equate the East Coast with urban I-95, but so many of the inland interstates in the East, like this one, are quite beautiful.

My grandparents lived in Troy, NY -- one of the suburbs of Albany. They were excited when I-88 finally opened, replacing NY-7. But also for another reason: there is a "toll free zone" where I-88 hits the NYS Thruway (I-90 at that point) at Exit 25A. Because the interchange was completed with federal funds, NYS wanted it to be "free." Which is why you can take I-88 to the Thruway and not have to pay a toll if you're only on the Thruway for 1-2 exits. This was probably the first bit of road geek trivia I had ever learned...
@AdamSmith-gs2dv2 жыл бұрын
It's also like that because there is no other way to get to I88 without going on the Thruway

By 1982, almost all of 88 was completed except for the last few miles outside Binghamton, which defaulted onto SR 7, which was partially limited access going into Binghamton. They finally upgraded the more northern section of the divided highway portion of SR 7 to interstate standards during the mid to late 80's. And the final piece was the connection between 7 and 81 over the river, which was done by 1989.

I-88 is quite a scenic road, like I-86. Something that I noticed a while ago while going southbound on I-81 is that there are "to I-88" shields on the sign for exit 6, just north of the 81/88 interchange, since there's no ramp directly from southbound 81 to eastbound 88. These are useful, although I doubt there's much traffic taking this route (much more coming on 81 from the south and 86 from the west).

NY 17 (4 lane) was not yet opened between Nichols and Waverly (it did open late summer). It was a long day. Over a decade later, I did drive on 88 after visiting my Dad north of Albany. It is a nice drive. A thought after hearing comments about extending it to Elmira and to I-90; if they never finish parts of the Quickway to Interstate standards, maybe then extend I-88. I-88 is basically a bypass of most of NY-7, and thought was given to extending it north of the Thruway to at least I-87 and possibly beyond (NY-7 becomes VT-9 which becomes NH-9 and then ME-9 to New Brunswick: the number change is obviously because there's US-9 in NY and US-7 in VT and route 9 is the old (pre-US-highway system) New England Interstate 9, at least until Wells, Maine (where it would intersect New England Route 1/US-1 and I-95), after which Maine extended it (largely along a corridor between the current and historical routing of 95 from there to Bangor and then east to New Brunswick as the faster way (without a ferry) to Saint John, Moncton, Nova Scotia, PEI, and Newfoundland). There was some lobbying from the three northern New England states (six senators for maybe 3 million people...) for a direct Interstate between southern Maine and Albany which would be "Masshole free" and bypass the MassPike. As a consequence of not building 88 beyond the Thruway, the Thruway is free for at least cars traveling between 88 and the 87/90 swap, though I believe trucks/buses/RVs are still tolled for that stretch.

This part of the country is not keen on high speed limits. Like the other guy said, NY was one of the last states to go up to 65. We in CT used to be at 55 until we went up to 65. The winding roads, rush hour traffics, and forested areas we have in the northeast don’t facilitate high speeds.

@elli6220 It could be worse. Before 2016, Interstates in Oregon were capped at 65, while every surrounding state had speed limits of 70 (75 in Idaho and Nevada). @@tylermarchand2996 I don’t think Schenectady is a suburb, but Albany is far more important and well known. That rule doesn’t quite work either. Mesa is on the way to half the population of Phoenix, but it’ll never not be a suburb. Can’t think of an example in the US offhand, but Quezon City is bigger than the city proper of Manila, but it’s definitely still a suburb

This I 88 is very easy to sign: Binghamton westbound and alternating between Albany and Schenectady eastbound. I say alternate between cities if there are other cities in the same metro that have MORE THAN HALF of the population of the largest city. Schenectady has 67k vs 100k in Albany, so it qualifies here (that’s not to mention other “towns” that border Albany and have HIGHER populations than Schenectady!). The way I look at things, if a smaller metropolitan city has a population roughly similar to that of the biggest city, then it malpractice to just dismiss it as a “suburb”. Biloxi, Fort Worth, Saint Paul and St. Petersburg are major cities that clearly AREN’T suburbs, because they have populations not that far off from their slightly larger counterparts…
@highway2heaven912 жыл бұрын
Suburbs are generally considered to be secondary cities that rely on the main city and could not stand on their own. Places like Fort Worth and Saint Paul could clearly stand on their own. So can Tacoma.

Why can’t you just dual control it?

@@highway2heaven91 Schenectady and Troy are very much considered equal to Albany in the capital region and all three are named together when referring to the metro area.
@markwilson40782 жыл бұрын
I know nothing about Biloxi, but I agree and disagree after that. Fort Worth could stand as their own city, but it is so close to Dallas that they have to be signed together if you are going for Fort Worth (unless you have already taken the split I-35). St. Paul also has that I-35 split, but the reason it can stand on its own is because it is Minnesota’s capital city. Move it out of there St. Paul no longer has a leg to stand on. St. Petersburg is an interesting case. They are far enough from Tampa that the two cities are in different counties (I know this because I grew up in the Tampa Bay Area). Because of St. Petersburg being in Pinellas County, 275 could and should sign it on its own going southbound. Going northbound, you do need to dual sign it if you have already gotten off 75 to go to the Sunshine Skyway, but from I-75, staying on 75 is the best way to Tampa from Manatee County because that county still borders Hillsborough County where you have Tampa. That all said, St. Petersburg’s identity comes from Tampa since Pinellas is still a county that borders the actual Tampa Bay. The one Rays game I was at took place in St. Petersburg even though they are the Tampa Bay Rays. My aunt lives in the county not far from there and last I remember she gets the Tampa Tribune for her newspaper. Every bridge you have to cross to get from Hillsborough County over goes over the Tampa Bay. There are other counties that are identified as part of the Bay Area, but Pinellas is the biggest one that does not house Tampa itself.

@@markwilson4078 I have a long history with St Pete and have lived there before. It’s definitely it’s own city. It has a real downtown and I didn’t know anyone who drove across the bridge to work. For lots of folks in St Pete Tampa is just for the airport, Bucs games (both of these barely into Tampa), Lightning games, a night out in Ybor once every couple years, and Busch Gardens.

Idk the combined populations of the major cities. It mirrors I-88 Western a bit. Moline-Rock Island on the West Side, Suburban Chicago(Hillside) on the East Side. I-88 Eastern continues the pattern.

The last of the 2 digit Interstate that the duplicate. An Intrastate Interstate being completely in New York State. From Binghamton to the Capital District of Albany. Connecting travelers from Canada, Northern New England as a Bypass to the I 95 Boston to Washington DC corridor, let's people travel to Florida. History. Part of the 1968 extension of the original 1956 Interstate system, work began in 1968. Wrapped up in 1989 Connecting New York SR 7 with I 81. A more scenic route than the New York Thruway via I 88 and I 86. Fairly simple Eastbound Albany. Westbound Binghamton. Next week Northern New England.

Nice pronunciation of Schenectady! So many times I've heard "Shuh"-nectady. They did just completely re-pave a ton of 88 with federal money, but I think it should be redesignated as NY-7, which traces basically the same route.

Then you have I-88 beginning and ending at I-90. The route from Erie to Albany (though Corning, Binghamton, and Oneonta) could very well be an I-x90.
@LeviRamsey2 жыл бұрын
@@Ramiestar At 350-ish miles, that would be far longer than any other 3di (and longer than a substantial portion of legitimate 2dis). The comparison would be I-57 (57 comes within a few miles of 55 in Chicago), and it's not a slam dunk that 57 wins that comparison.
@markwilson40782 жыл бұрын
@@RamiestarI-12 already begins and ends with I-10, so it wouldn’t be crazy to have 88 begin and end on 90 in that sense. That said, if they extended 86 anywhere else, then the other extended 88 would no longer be feasible. Of course, if 86 and 88 became one interstate, I would rather it be 88 because it would be too long to be a 3di at this point. Even 395 in CT that goes into Massachusetts is nowhere near this long.
