Welcome to Solo Intro - • SOLO - Fretboard Visua...
"What Are Intervallic Functions?" - • SOLO - Fretboard Visua...
Visualize the fretboard, master scales and play through changes like a pro with intervallic functions!
‣ Solo is a revolutionary practice tool designed by world renowned fusion guitarists Tom Quayle and David Beebee.
‣ One of the biggest barriers to improvising on guitar is finding and mapping out the relevant chord tones and scales all over on the fretboard in real time.
Solo is a highly focussed app for developing your note finding and visualization ability on the guitar. There is no time-based pressure and Solo reduces the cognitive load of having to choose which ‘notes/intervals’ to play. As you get quicker at finding these ‘notes’ you will conversely get better at choosing them whilst improvising. Players of all ability levels will reap huge benefits from practicing with Solo.
‣ Using common progressions, Solo presents you with one chord symbol or scale at a time and asks you to find and play a series of notes based on their intervallic function.
‣ Solo listens to the notes you play, analyzes them in real time, and doesn’t move on until you’ve correctly found each note by its intervallic function in the specified order.
‣ This process builds strong fretboard visualization for the most powerful, efficient and malleable way to KNOW your way around the fretboard no matter how difficult the chord changes are.
As a unique and powerful ear training tool, Solo also develops your ability to not only visualize what you’re playing, but hear it in real time too.
If you know your note names but struggle to learn new scales, play through chord changes or find yourself stuck in pattern based playing, practicing diligently with Solo will be transformational for your knowledge of the fretboard and subsequently your ability to outline harmony when you improvise.
‣ CHANGES PLAYING TRAINER
Practice finding intervallic functions over a series of chord changes based on common and popular chord progressions. Solo is programmed with all the knowledge behind the scenes to understand jazz and popular music harmony and will always pick appropriate intervallic functions based on the harmony of the progression.
‣ SCALE TRAINER
Practice finding intervallic functions within scales on the fretboard. Solo includes all the modes of the Major, Melodic Minor, Harmonic Minor and Harmonic Major scales, plus pentatonic and symmetrical scales. Seeing and finding scale tones as intervallic functions will transform your ability to manipulate and improvise with scales in real time.
‣ TUTORIALS
Solo also includes video tutorials to get you started with intervallic functions, how to find them on the fretboard, using Solo for ear training and how to get the most from your practice time with the app.

Hi Tom and David, I have a suggestion for a feature that could be added to the app. I was thinking about a timer that starts when you begin to play a sequence (eg the selected intervals in a chord or in a scale), and stops when you finish the sequence. This would allow keeping track of the time taken to complete a sequence, and would provide a tool to measure progress and to challenge oneself to get faster. Thank you for producing such a great app. Gaetano

Hello Tom. Great videos as always. I recently purchased the solo app and it's a great app. I have a question which a little bit off topic maybe. I see you have a bunch of lessons on your website. Does any of these cover muting techniques and lessons on how to play cleaner? Thanks!!

intervallic functions is much more intuitive and its actually how we learn songs by ears, i mean, its our natural way to perceive music understanding music by note names is like listening to an audiobook, but instead the narrator is spelling letter by letter, so you have to do the extra work of putting the letters together and form the word, and not only that, you have to remember previous words to actually form the phrase, its even worse in my case because in brazil we use dó ré mi instead of the alphabet, and its a nightmare to internalize it

When you select to run through, say root and 3rd of Maj7 chords "in all keys", how does it decide what order to go through the keys in? Is it a circle of fifths thing? Or random?

Thanks for another informative video! I got Solo around a week ago and I feel like It’s reignited my drive to learn on the guitar after a very long plateau of not knowing what I was supposed to do to expand. I’m currently making sure I have all the note names firmly ingrained, so I’m not using the app anywhere near to it’s full potential yet 😄 Just wondering how this stuff would apply when you try soloing with the number system? You said you’re actively thinking about the root of the chord you’re currently playing over but if someone said to play over a ii V I in G Major would you have to convert it before you start playing?
@Nikoo033
@Nikoo033 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sam, may I ask what you mean by “convert” it? A II V I would stay a II V I regardless of the key.
@SamI124QRiley
@SamI124QRiley 3 жыл бұрын
@@Nikoo033 I understand that it's a system telling you what chords to play when you have the Key but if you're focussing on the note name of the root of the chord that you're currently on and playing intervals around that then I'm guessing you can't also be actively thinking about where the I chord of the Key is? When I said convert I meant that if someone asked you to play a ii V I in C Major would you be able to jump straight in without preparation or would you have to tell yourself ahead of time that you'll be playing over Dmin | G7 | CMaj ?
@SoloApp
@SoloApp 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Sam, those things become instinctive with practise, and you don't really have to convert it as such in real time. But to answer you question yes, we are always thinking visually from the root note of any chord in a progression. Solo is training you to see the intervallic functions that 'orbit' around any given root note above or below. This allows you to intentionally target chord tones, or extensions or the full scale. Hope that helps, and thanks for using Solo. 🐝

@@SamI124QRiley you're welcome, and that's it - one step at a time. The philosophy we come at this with is to work at the speed of your brain, it's partly why there is no time based pressure or rhythm, or a metronome within Solo. It can grow as your ability does. Happy practising Sam.

I understood.. if I play C major, by playing C, then one third and one fifth... I will know how to locate each individual note by the intervals and play arpeggios, but that does not teach me or help me how to put the fingers to play the chord. Does "Solo app" also help and teach you how to play chords or only intervals?..thanks

I already have the Solo app, and my guitar is tuned to All fourths, I come from electronic music and when I started learning the guitar got very mad when I saw the 2nd string, not at fourths and breaking the symmetry to play all over as I do in Push2 from Ableton. I thought "who the hell did that and why,?" ended up learning about a guy in Spain called Antonio de Torres, in 1880 who made that tuning, but decided to change mine, and then doing research I found you and the rest.. I do not understand why not everybody i switching to all 4ths tuning, everything is much easier to understand.

The way I see it, notes are relative to their key and shapes, intervals are constant. Intervals are a much more effective way of mapping melodies and harmony across the fretboard.

But you do need to know where the root is. The 2nd note of each interval is just the root of yet another interval. So I'm not sure if you can emphasize one method of another.
