+Jaspreet Sandhu Here is more or less the translation of what reno is saiying, but it's just a mundane interview, really: *Reno:* I'm Reno Lemaire, the author of Dreamland, a french manga published by Pika Edition since 2006. 0:14 *Q1:* 10 years of Dreamland ! How is it? R: It's odd, you realise it made then year, but i make my volumes and all, and it seems like i started last year. I'm exagerating a little, but it go fast. Years are rythmed by the volumes. That's my baby, a little trip of mine; it happened to get popular. I always present it like this. 0:18 *Q2:* You are in Japan Expo Sud (the name of the convention where this interwiew have been made), other events planned for the year of the 10h anniversary. Yes, there is. I don't know if i can talk about if or what. So yes, it gonna be a party, i'm someone who like to party and every years, book signing are a pretext to party, so you can imagine that for the ten years, we're going to do more stuff. I think it's going to be a good year. 1:13 *Q3:* Do you have other projects, maybe in cinema or video games? *R:* All my projects are really essentially comics, panel and bubbles. I'm really an author who love this medium. So i have written a lot of other thing. But i don't have the time, Dreamland take me 12 hours a day. So, there is a desire to do other thing, beside dreamland, because there's still the desire to draw dreamland. Eevery volumes lead to a other, and when i finish one volume, i just want to make the next one. So i have other desire, but don't have the time now. It's not the time to abandon dreamland, because iven if there's a little success, it's difficult on this market, especially for a french, to succeed amidst the big blockbusters. It's not because i've reached volume 15 that i can say "how about taking a break to make something else". So for now, it's dreamland above all, and i'm enjoying it, and the other project stay in stand-by, because i don't have 8 arms. Besides, for other medium, well i would love a dreamland video game, and since i would'nt be the one making it, there's no problem. As long as we make good use of the license, i'm open about everything. 2:30 *Q4:* What advice would you give to French who want to draw manga? *R:*Yeah, that's the hard question. i rarely give any advice since i'm learning everyday, and i'm not the best placed to give advices. When you see my evolution...tot the best artist, and all, i have learned on the job. But if i had to give one advice to a young wo really want to make manga, there's a rythme to follow. we are not in Japan, so it's not 3 volumes a year, but it's still one volume and half per year, or two volume a year. That's a lot of work, and it need a big motivation. The advice, when you say you want to draw manga...well, listen to you and do it! I see a lot of people who tell me "i want to make manga", they are 15 years old, is ask "have you made pages?" "no". A manga is 200 pages,if you want to draw manga, make pages. it does'nt matter if it's beautiful or not. for exemple, when i was 15, i had already made 1000 pages of comics. So draw pages is...not even a advice, it's logic: if you want to make manga, you draw pages. because it will help you improve in everything. it will help you understand the narration. 4:19 *Q5:* about the 1000 pages at 15 years old, was it the project of dreamland? *R:* no, not at all. i'm someone who don't really have project, i had a idea every 4 seconds. But when i think of it in Hindsight, and it happened not long ago with the inundations in my region, i helped clean my mother's garage, and i found the boxes of my olds comics, made since i was 7 . I drew my firsts pages at 7. That's why, when i say 15 years old, i'm not exagerating, there's 1000 pages of...200 series. Manga, not manga. little 10 pages booklet, of 300 pages blocs. And this is not dreamland, it's alaways differents heroes and all, but when i see these, i think dreamland is the outcome of all that. Because, it's the same themes, with lot of characters. characters rooted in our reality; when i was in high school, it was high-schoolers characters. Always with the setting that i saw, there was always Montpellier. I created universes, there was reality, plus something fantastic. I have made a 800 pages series, when i was 15 to 17 years old, it was called "the Hikari team", it's like dreamland's big brother. Dreamland is the cullmination of my storytelling. 5:54 *Q6:* Have you ever thinked about crossover with characters from other licences? *R:* Always in fact, Spin-of, too. Since Dreamland is a world which have grown bigger than me. I have created my bases, established the rules; i don't really know how, you have the little spark to create something. Then, you enrich it. I have created my own mythology, so the world end up being enormous. We follow Dreamland via the Lucky Stars point of view, so you can only see what happen where i put the camera, and the way i create my characters, all of them -that's why, often, when i talk with the reader, a lot of them like all the characters.- because when i create a character, it's like if it was a hero, i write his past, hist present, his present, his future. For every characters. So every character sheet is a spin-off. For exemple, for Lyon, i wrote his story, there's enough to make 6 volumes. It would be a other series. It's just that Dreamland is a world where all the characters i have created interact with each others. I just put the focus on the Lucky Star, so of course we'll not see everything, since other things happen elsewhere, maybe even more interesting. I have wrote a lot of thing, i don't exactly see them as spin-of, but all the character exist, so i could i could make 200 or 300 volumes with all i have written with all the characters 7:24 *Q8:*Do you have a message for the fans *R:* Well, to thank them. Because they're patients, i try to make as quickly as i can. Thanks to bear my crap at the signing sessions. I see thoses as a exchanges. I don't just come to give a drawing and goodbye; besides, my drawing are not really beautiful. It's a pretext, they wait at the queue, to talk, to spent 5 minutes with me. So i tell them "Thank you" to...to endure my jokes, since i'm quite mocking, i like to play with them, and sometime it could not pass, but they're always taking it well. So thank you for being patients, thank you to understand me, too, for the delayed volumes. i have a really understanding audience, and we're always comunicating togethers, so...Thats it. Sorry if there's any mistake, i'm trying to improve my english, that's why i've decided to try a translation of this. if something is unclear with my english, let me know.
