"right path"? Why, because he's decided to criticize Democrats instead of Republicans? I'd say that gives him more credibility than it does being wrong. He's a classic lefty, like I am. I am also a writer who took journalism in college; albeit a small college, I still understand how it works. Journalists are supposed to head where the most smoke flows. And for the past almost twenty-five years, the Democratic Party has slowly turned on its base. That's part of the reason Occupy Wall Street happened. That protest wasn't solely about the banks. I was there. Those general assemblies covered a gambit of legitimate grievances. And I too have been accused of "losing my way" by some of my friends, all because I challenged the orthodoxy of the DCCC during COVID and the "Russiagate" hoax. Insofar as covering those stories from the correct side garnered derision from my contemporaries and family members, it's only galvanized my position more, especially coming out of it on the correct side of history, while all those people who gave me crap for my stances have seemed to memory-hole those entire events. Matt's fine... he's performing his job as a legitimate journalist.

The USA's ruling parties have made the words "democracy" and "authoritarian" completely meaningless. There is no difference now between the regimes the empire calls "democratic" and the regimes it calls "authoritarian." If anything, the one means the other. Maybe 10 years ago there was still a noticeable difference, but the censorship and political repression is just as strong here as it was then in places like Turkey and Latvia. Oligarchy and extreme inequality do this, by shrinking the distribution of good livings, they run out of carrots and have to use ever more stick to control us. Like with how "freedom" now habitually means "power", when US politicians talk about "our freedom", "the troops preserving our freedom", it's clearly unrelated to the state of civil and constitutional rights in the USA. What they are praising is the empire's power over other countries, and the ruling class's power over us. Which logically follows, because freedom is the byproduct of power at the personal level, which is why the pursuit of economic equality is the way to achieve mass freedom, through equality of power, most especially in the sense of "freedom to" but also in terms of "freedom from".

@9:33 The KZbin comment section is a perfect example of active lexical pruning or sematic pruning in social media, that is very much like what Taibbi is describing. On KZbin if you write certain perfectly acceptable descriptive words, or combinations of words, your comment will be auto-deleted. It's become so bad, you have to try to communicate certain ideas in code, or use poor enough grammar or spelling that the algo misses it. But that still doesn't prevent someone from reporting your comment and getting you on the algo's list. It's insanity.

I've always seen the usage of "patriotism" or being a "patriot" as a political tool to bash a political opponent over the head with when the side using that cudgel had no legitimate response to crucial questions about our military adventures around the globe. And I never trust anyone who self-espouses their patriotism publicly; the irony there is that's usually the side of the political aisle that claims, and rightfully so at times, that the other side of the aisle does nothing but virtue signals, when to me, that's the ultimate act of virtue signaling. It's just my opinion, but I feel that real patriots don't need to publicly display that idea like a badge for all others to respect. It should be inherent, I think. And when we mix politics with that idea, it becomes both muddied and cheapened for political advantage over one side or the other. That's just my opinion. Feel free to challenge that idea, as that's what makes this country so great, allegedly.

It's in the GOP that you see any dissent to the neocons agenda. Not enough, sure, but it's Republicans and right-wing populists who have rebelled against the trend. There is ZERO dissent against the neocons among the Democrats. There is also zero dissent from the security state bullying.
