Interview met Mark King en Mike Lindup van Level 42 op North Sea Jazz

De wereld is vol ellende, maar muziek staat daar boven, zegt Mark King. De bassist en zanger van Level 42 geniet zichtbaar van North Sea Jazz. Niet alleen als artiest, maar ook als bezoeker."We spelen ieder weekend in de zomer wel op een festival", vertelt King. "De ene keer ontmoet je andere artiesten, soms doe je je optreden en ga je weer weg. Maar North Sea Jazz geeft zo'n compleet gevoel. Je komt zo veel artiesten tegen. Verderop staat dan ineens Earth, Wind & Fire, die hebben in 1983 nog een album voor ons geproduceerd."Met een optreden op de zaterdagmiddag kan Kings dag niet meer stuk. "Je komt van het podium en drinkt een glas wijn of twee - of twee flessen. Wij zitten hier een beetje lol te hebben, terwijl de rest zich gereedmaakt om te gaan spelen."Rondhangen met PrinceKing heeft veel goede herinneringen aan het festival. Tijd doorbrengen met Prince bijvoorbeeld, die tijdens meerdere edities op het affiche stond voordat hij dit jaar op 21 april zijn laatste adem uitblies. "Het was heel leuk om met hem rond te hangen. Hij was een stille man, maar ook een erg lieve gast. En een fantastische muzikant." De muzikale smeltkroes van NSJ is voor King een verademing ten opzichte van de dagelijkse ellende in het nieuws. "Alles gaat verkeerd. De schietpartijen in Amerika, Brexit. We hebben onszelf daarmee niet alleen in de voet geschoten, maar de boel opgeblazen", zegt hij meewarig. Politici maken er een zootje van, concludeert hij. "Maar muziek is beter dan dat, beter dan dat alles", besluit hij met een brede glimlach.

Mark seems to just get better with age. His music is real talent, not like the autotuned 'artistes' these days. Smiley Virus, Sicki Binoj and Lady Googoo cannot emulate the talent of these seasoned old schoolers.

These two show how weight gain changes how you look when you get older: Mike looks pretty much the same, just with some wrinkles, whereas Mark looks totally different.
