Not gonna lie…it’s very cool to finally hear her speaking Swedish. And how Scandinavians can effortlessly transition to English. The other kicker is that English sounded VERY similar to the Nordic languages about 1000 years ago. It’s amazing how much English has diverged from its Germanic cousins.

@herrbonk3635 Жыл бұрын
@@radovanprstojevic1060 You mean in Danish? She is exaggerating, but Danish lack of consonants or clear borders between syllables/words can indeed make it hard to "sync in" with, for a Swede or Norwegian. Especially with certain dialects. You could perhaps compare it to an american trying to understand an old thick working class cockey accent, or rural dialects in (say) Scotland or Ireland.
@toxicblackwidow9841 Жыл бұрын
English sounds more "swedish" than "german", for sure. In fact, some linguists assume that Modern English diverged so much from Old English due to "viking" presence in England that it became a scandinavian language ! 😀

As someone from Southern part of Sweden, we actually grew up with free Danish TV channels so as a kid, I watched DR1 and DR2 all the time, hence I can understand them up to even ~94 %. And I have also the luxury of living in other parts of Sweden so my accent became very neutral so if I communicate with a Dane, I think both of us would understand each other fairly well. But far from all swedes would have the same background and advantage, therefore speaking with a Dane would be very very difficult normally for the average Joe here in Sweden. What I notice is that: there is a "threshold" to get over when it comes to communicate Danish with the rest of the Scandivanian languages. If you can get past that threshold and speak slowly, I promise you: You WILL be able to understand each other. Our languages are not THAT different but people just speak waaaaaaaaaaay too fast and swallow all the vowels, that's all. Don't swallow all the vowels! Pronounce every single vowel and you can make it easier for others to understand you. And don't switch to English instantly as soon as you find it a bit hard to understand each other. Rather ask politely: "Could you please repeat it one more time, but slower this time" and Im sure you both will get used to each other. English is actually the one language that pushes away Scandinavian languages. People getting too lazy and are too rushed nowadays when they have to talk, sadly...

Swedes generally speaking understand most of what a Norwegian are saying. Even if most words in Norwegian are different than in Swedish they are somewhat similar so that you will figure out the meaning of them. There are words here and there that most people don't understand but you can still get the context out of a whole sentence. The dialect is somewhat different though so you kinda have to concentrate more to understand it compared to listening to a fellow Swede. Norwegian people understand Swedish better than other way around though.
