They're old but more importantly wise. People hate on Bernie. I love him. When he talks he's so transparent he's like I'll tell you what I think and that's it. No bs. He simply just gives zero fucks what you think of him. Thats why I love him. I agree with most of their proposals.

+Andy Oswald except ZDF have probably been lobbying for this interview for three years ;) it's a small cabal of powerful people who control F1, and honestly this is probably part of their public "flexing of the muscles" to show how much power they still wield. All a bit continuous battle between manufacturers, teams and the sport's controlling bodies.

An amazing conversation. Thank you. I totally agree with Bernie Ecclestone that they have no idea of the actual viewing numbers. Here in Los Angeles, everyone I know is somehow watching on their cell phones or lap tops. I agree also that manual gearboxes and clutches would bring back the human element. Integrating a manual gear lever with the hybrid system would be a fascinating cybernetic engineering challenge as well. The road relevancy of the hybrid engines is extremely important, the industry must improve it's overall efficiency and reduced carbon emissions with urgent immediacy. Presenting and glamorizing hybrid products through Formula One is an excellent way to market to a mistrusting consuming public. Honda should be given enormous credit for what they have stepped up to, and I would think many other car companies would want a Formula One hybrid project of their own as well. I really appreciate Max and Bernie for so generously sharing in this interview.

Interesting interview, my uncle was the chief engineer [mechanic] for Lotus in the 1970’s [JPS Special era] and his option on the modern cars was very similar to Bernie’s and Max’s. “The mechanics and driver work together to do test runs to set the car up and qualify. During the race no radios and no driver aides, ... if the driver thinks he needs new tyres he is the one to decide when he comes into the pits so he’s more or less on his own during the race” That way you can find out who built and set up the best car and who the best driver is.

Don't forget Max and Bernie are not just businessmen; they have been involved with F1 since the early 70's running teams. Max I think if still in charge would not have allowed what has occurred in the last 5 years, he talks very well and has so many good ideas. Can the same be said about Jean Todt? They work well together, Bernie selling F1 and Max controlling what can be done by the teams, unfortunately we have lost the former.

It was his own choice really. Mosley has said that he would certainly be reelected but he mentions two reasons. Firstly, 16-years at any job is a long time and he felt it was time to move on and give room to new blood and new ideas (a very healthy perspective imo) and secondly he favored the front-runner Jean Todt who, again in Mosleys words, is more or less the opposite of himself, i.e he is a "compromiser", a word Mosley would not associate himself with.

Space Martian ; I totally agree! Yes he's made decisions within F1 that I don't agree with, but IMO F1 was far bigger and more exciting when he was around. He certainly stirred things up and made things interesting/controversial (and with hindsight also made some very good decisions). The thing that gets me is; back in the Mosley days I found the ‘off-track’ action (controversy/machinations) very exciting - I was glued to the forums, magazines and internet, which made subsequent races and related broadcasts all the more interesting and exciting. Whereas, and unfortunately, these days I’ll tune in for the race itself and nothing else (just don’t have the same emotional attachment - all a bit boring really). P.s. I don’t give two hoots about Mosley’s sex life, that’s none of my business!

Bernie as far back as 2006 BSC Consulting Group made recommendations to change the race rules to include weighting of cars which is commonly used in BTCC. Under this format previous race winners carry extra weight for the following race.Clearly this has been proven to work over a sustained period. Why not F1 ?

Bernie should've left the game in 2010/2011. He was a master on the TV age, but internet age? No, he doesn't fully get it. He many times said "Without TV, F1 won't survive". TV is as old as he is. We need another Bernie who understands the web. How much would you pay for a streamed F1 race online?! I would pay a reasonable price. I could watch it at home... or on an airplane! Why FOM still relies solely on TV, I do not understand. FOM sells F1 to broadcasters. The FOM should become the broadcaster... streaming races on youtube and other platforms. If you want to watch it on a flat screen... just wifi your phone to one. The TV age is practically finished... just like radio broadcasts before it.

@SirRobbins
@SirRobbins 3 жыл бұрын
Huge fan base and since they are paying insane salaries, those drivers would quit so you'd lose major teams, major drivers and it would crash the sport.... You'd also lose the engines in over half the cars. On the flip side, Ferrari would lose their investors as would Mercedes so it would come back to haunt them.

@@jarek3573 The ones who are big like Hamilton, Alonso and such would. They've made their money, have their championships and have nothing to lose walking away. yeah reduce ticket prices and I'd go down, instead of the cheap peasant ticket prices where you sit on a patch of grass like amongst a cattle of sheep. F1 is too predictable, but it has been like that for years where the best machine (car) wins. That's why Fernando is considered good for flogging that dead horse Ferrari around and coming second in the Championship a few years ago.

Best machine, yes... it always has been. The problem now is related to PUs and tires. The real problem is that powerful teams have a strong saying on regulations. These 2 gentlemen got consistently bluffed by the teams. Its easy. The FIA provides the rules; the teams either comply or leave the sport. Certain teams have been squeezing F1 like a lemon. "If we don't have some 200 million just for being on the grid, then we will leave :'( ". Go ahead, leave... lets go back to a Lotus against a Tyrrell... or a Williams vs a McLaren. It was good racing! Where will Mercedes or Ferrari go after leaving F1? Will they create a "Formula Ferrari"?... Formula Unicorn? Come on...

I know right? It's just simply not competitive. I'm a 24-year-old American who has been closely watching Formula One for only three years now I came in at the tail end of 2012, and all I have to say is it's simply not competitive and that gets boring. But because f1 is so space-age/hitech/beautiful, I still want to see the cars and enjoy it. On the other hand, A lot of people don't care how fancy it is They just want to see good passing and battles on track. Now formula 1 is just a train of cars, a script, watching a movie over and over or the same book over and over.
@NoNameLeft1500

you missed the space-age of f1.... that were the 2001-2005 years... (and also the 1992-1993 years.. it looked almost creepy with the active suspension),... yes f1 is still hightech... but at the moment the cars are smaller (so they have less chance for efficient aerodynamics).. running on tires that can't hold up to what the car would be capable of... with an experimental powerunit which is restricted by the amount of fuel used.. (not only the amount used in the complete race.. that would be understandable but also the amount of avarage fuel.. fuel flow) ... active telemetry is forbidden as electronical helpers like traction and launch controll... the space-age was 2004... where they had active 2way telemetry, electronics like tc and lc, much wider and flatter bodywork which gave more possibles for more efficient aerodynamics... and most importend tires that could handle the car on the limit for quite an amount of laps... if you are interested search for some videos of that time... it was stunning how fast those cars were... todays f1 looks like a lower level racing (like gp2 or so) compared to what f1 was like in 2004... if you look a race or qualifying from back then now again.. it looks like fastforwarded :D (and that even with those grooved tires back then.. who knows how fast they would have been on real slicks) yes there wasn't much overtaking going on... but everytime it happened it was a huge thing... nowadays with this drs stuff.. it's just unsatisfying.. all they need to do is drive a second behind the car.. push the button ..rearwing flaps.. go by... at those times back then they needed to hang on and fight for it... and they did that on the absolute limit all the time because the tires held up to it... and f1 is just not the pinnacle anylonger when the real pinnacle was already 16 years ago... I think most lap records on circuits which didn't got changed were still from 2004ish

You are completely right. I love watching onboard footage from those years. When Ross Brawn and Schumi were unstoppable. I was in middle school back then and not that into F1. But those are my favorite years to watch now for sure. Those roaring V10s holly shit, and the cars just seem to whip around the track at an ungodly pace. I think they looked relatively refined back then but still so much down force and mechanical grip with the tires. I like the idea of passing without DRS down a str8 you are right it's not very exhilarating
