Sounds like Church of the Highlands is doing well. Their church planting organization is not so great. I was church plant #422. Sadly, they abandon you after launch day. Myself and at least a dozen other planters have deep concerns on this pattern. So the number of 580 plants is not correct. Many of them close because they lack aftercare

Coth is a personality cult type organization. Hodges owns this organization, and lives well. He is a great speaker and communicator. He could sell a lot of whole life insurance. He did not 'create' this church experience - he simply copied HillSong Australia down the line. Why do i say personality? Wait until he is no longer streamed to each 'campus'. Then you will see how talented a speaker the local 'pastors' are...most will head off to the next new thing. We live in the day when talented speakers...start their own church and become wealthy and answer to no one, and are celebrities.

I just want pastors to properly exegete scripture, and understand what they read and just read the word back to us. Lol I don’t need 3-5 point sermons that all start with “T” and barely mention jesus or the cross at the end. We don’t need gifted or excellent “communicators”, we need Christ and Him crucified, risen for our salvation and Gods grace and mercy upon our lives. Not all this other garbage inserted.

We all need to be transformed by renewing our mind in Christ, we all need to be reminded of Jesus’ great sacrifice on the cross, we all NEED to be taught by pastors (who’s responsibility is to properly handle the word) the truth of Gods word, and it’s sad to say there are MANY who do not. I’ve heard many messages from “pastors” today, including some from Chris Hodges, and I just assume to stay away from these guys. It’s a show, and to me, the word of God is not a show. You don’t need all the nonsense of seeker-sensitive churches to draw people to repentance in Christ, the Holy Spirit will do that. It’s not difficult to understand. Hodges, Morris, Furtick and Groeschel are the tops of the pyramids, and none of them seem to give true biblical understanding when they speak. Just stuff that sounds good so you trust them, so you think what they’re doing is geniuine, so you dump money into their businesses, so they can live very very happily ever after. Guard your heart Jordan and keep in your word. I fell for this stuff for years and are very concerned when people will defend these guys with everything. No hard feelings here man, just concern. One of the things that HE has taught me is not to let a spirit of criticism invade my heart. I understand your concern, but the Holy Spirit is using Highlands in a powerful way, and if you deny that, then you are blind. Don’t be so judgmental. The Holy Spirit USES people to draw others close, and those pastors you mentioned may not fit your definition of “pastor” but they have each been given an assignment by God. Who are you to tell me or anyone else that their assignment was not from God? Who are you to assume that Chris Hodges does not handle the word properly? Sunday messages are not FOR people like me and you who are farther along in our walks. Sunday messages are OUTREACH at Highlands. It’s just a different model. Have you ever heard of Highlands’ Freedom curriculum? Have you heard of the Growth Track? Absolutely NO PERSON apart from Jesus is perfect, but that doesn’t give you permission to bash other Christians and their ministries. I'm no longer a church goer and now consider myself agnostic, but used to work on staff for Highlands so I know a lot about the inner workings and how the church operates. Pastor Chris is an extremely good marketer, a smart business person and a genuine guy, but he is first and foremost a business person. He runs the church like a business, and has taught many many other churches, if not the entire modern church industry, to be successful. If you go to any church that has small groups, multicampuses, or has coffee in the lobby, it's because Chris pioneered a lot of those things, things most modern 'charismatic' churches now do. You have to give credit where credit is due: Chris is a pioneer of modern church, especially large multi-site models. He is a business man. He found a group of smart people, figured out the formula and is squeezing every drop he can get out of it. It's just a business, like any other megachurch. He founded ARC and GROW to do one thing: expand the business model and license his way of doing church to other churches or people who want to start one. He is in my opinion the Steve Jobs of modern churches.

I’m on the prayer team at Highlands so I know how you feel because I also get bored of the system that the modern day church has established. However, God has me here. I know your comment is old, but I wanted to say that I totally understand your concern, and I have felt the way you feel, but I have learned some things: 1) Highlands is nowhere near perfect, and if we allow ANY church to define who God is, we will be let down, because people are TERRIBLE at representing God. 2) Highlands and Chris Hodges have been given a ministry by God, and that ministry doesn’t have to look like anything except God’s plan for them. They are doing their ministry, and it is affecting thousands of lives. 3) I hate when a church becomes this fake business model, and I feel like that is so far from what we see in the bible, but everything that Highlands does is done out of a genuine hunger to see people know god, find freedom, discover purpose, and make a difference. And I can say that with full confidence, after meeting Chris myself and speaking to his sons, on multiple occasions, about the matter.
