Cone has been making videos for a couple of years now. I finally met him for the first time at a National Armor and Cavalry Collection open house a couple of months ago. And thus we have another episode of "Chieftain interviews random people"
The open houses, by the way, are the only time that you can access the collection, they don't have the manpower to be open routinely. Keep an eye on their facebook page for announcements.

The Chieftain being so humble about being old and having a dry sense of humor(yet he has the beasty rabbit from Monty Python), then giving ConeofArc the ultimate compliment (about the student becoming the master), and it goes woosh right over Cone's head. 🤣 The T-29 made such a splendid backdrop for this meeting of giants. A light format for information about a vehicle that is still accurate is needed. The Chieftain and Cone of Arc cover the need for information about tanks in this regard. I have seen friends that took the stuff from Lazerpig seriously but could not warm them up to Greg's Airplanes and Automobiles as this goes far to deep into the details. Like Greg's Airplanes and Automobiles 4 part series about the Nakajima Ki-84 fighter prop or his video about the FW 190s Kommandogerät (mechanical computer). So a middle ground between both parts of the spectrum (Lazerpig = entertaining but a lot of misinformation and Greg's Airplanes and Automobiles = "the test is in 2 weeks, class dismissed!") is usefull.

Idk why Lazer had to get so butt hurt about that fact. His videos were good entry level content for entry level historians. Then when they get more involved in the info, they’ll go to Cone, Red Effect, and Chieftain. But they’ll still watch Lazer because he was entertaining. Why did he have to get so butt hurt over not being perfect?!?

Nice random cross-over. I quite like the content of both of your channels, so this was fun. I've always been a low-key history and tank nerd, but I totally get what you were talking about with regards to gaming and such getting more people interested in this stuff. It's one of the reasons I always think they should strive to be as accurate as they can wherever they can, without compromising the story they want to tell. Getting the details right always makes things feel more authentic, even if they aren't exactly realistic or 100% accurate.

Interesting fact. The very first Krupp Nickel-Chromium armor plate )Test Plate #420) was made by hand in 1894. It was a carefully cleaned and purified (reducing Sulfur and Phosphorus and any other impurity to the desired alloy) circa-0.3%-Carbon Silicon-Manganese "mild" steel with roughly 2.5% Chromium and 4.5% Nickel added, the first for extra hardening ability without problems with higher Carbon steels and the latter for toughness (reduced cracking on heavy impact). It was thus called by Krupp "Type 420 Steel". It could also form the basis for moderately-high-hardness thick-faced (35% face when Krupp did it originally) "Krupp Cemented" warship side armor. French Nickel-only steel introduced in 1890 could not be hardened into KC at over 9" plate thickness, but the Chromium allowed much thicker plates to be hardened successfully. The word "cemented" meant a thin, but very high-% Carbon surface layer was added -- US "Harveyized" extreme-hardness "case-hardened" thin surface layer (some later KC-type armors eliminated the cemented layer with no loss of resistance). In its soft form -- circa-225 BHN for Krupp ~6" thickness here, getting harder for very thin plates and softer for thick plates in most cases -- it was the original material later used for US Rolled Homogeneous Armor of WWII, among most other similar armors. Amazingly, it was just as strong as end-of-WWII RHA or naval armors of this kind (decks, etc.). It used the same 1.22 Velocity Coefficient for the French De Marre Nickel-Steel Penetration Formula introduced in 1890 along with that kind of armor and still used by the US Army for plate quality tests at the end of WWII. Krupp seems to have nailed it with this new 420 plate steel from the very start!!

@Mr_Bunk
@Mr_Bunk 5 ай бұрын
@lc1138 I find that hard to believe, since the two have posted numerous videos on it, but in short: - Lazerpig makes a video slamming the T-14 Armata by claiming things like it supposedly using a WW2-era German engine - Cone and Red Effect point out much of his claims as erroneous and publicly question his credibility as an armour history buff, as well as throwing unneeded insults and insinuations his way - Lazerpig counters by questioning their credibility in turn, and calling them 'Russian shills' for supposedly supporting the T14 by merely critiquing his takedown, then insulting them both in turn - At this point, the subscribers of each channel start flame wars and attempt to brigade the other's channels - Cone and Lazerpig in particular cease mention of the T14 altogether and purely focus on undermining the credibility of the other - The Chieftan steps in to try and calm things down whilst missing the fact that this was never really about the T14 in the first place - The Chieftan interviews Cone and Lazerpig gets a Top 5 Tanks video with Bovington Tank Museum - Things have probably calmed down for the moment, but resentment and grudges are still present

There is a museum I'm planning on visiting and it has a Sherman from what I have seen, now it had the long barrel so I can't say if it is a WWII built sherman or a post war sherman, or by God even a Frankenstein tank like the FrankenTiger

Ack! I now live just minutes from this collection and I somehow keep managing to miss their open house events. I am literally foaming at the mouth to get in there and poke around. I've even written the directors basically begging for a job and they likely just tossed it out assuming it was another internet nutter... guess until I actually catch one, I'll have to continue living vicariously through you and other youtubers who have gotten access already.

You can volunteer there at pretty much any time. They are starved for warm bodies to do basic stuff. Last time I was down there the preservation director, Bob, got onto me about coming to do research and never lifting a hand to help out. You can get on Ft. Moore easily with a day pass and then the collection is just off the main drag. If you're really interested in being around the collection and lending a hand go on over.

There’s lots of weird and wonderful tanks and aircraft that I find out about when they’re introduced to games. I’m kind of interested in the object 435 at the minute and I’m struggling to find much information on it

I have a question that maybe you can help me with. I have been looking for some photos of some Russian combat engineer tanks that were variants of the T-62, T-62/160 and T-62/122, for months, and I cannot find one. I've been through several of the books at the armor and cavalry collection archives, but I haven't had any luck finding them there either. Have you seen either of these vehicles either in person or in print, and if so, can you direct me to where I can go to see them?

With ALL tanks there is a trade off between the 3 factors of tanks, Firepower, Mobility, Protection. With Chieftain we favored firepower & protection over mobility & at the time we outgunned any tank on the battlefield. We outgunned the Soviets by about a 1,000 meters.

I'm not the right person to say this, but to me, the difference between the two channels is that Chieftain provided a lot of information about subjects I'm ALREADY interested in, and ConeOfArc provides less information about subjects I'm not already interested in - but the videos are short enough for me to justify investing the time to watch. I learn from both, I just learn differently. 💜💜
