That all constructions are not equally valid seems ground on which to stand even in this shifty time. Many thanks for this thoughtful interview.

I feel that people that "know of" the book instead of reading it seem to think that there is no realism in it. I must admit that I thought so myself before reading it. To me, I dont see the contradiction between this theory and biological theories of human behavior.

Berger and Luckmann's theory is opposite of biological theories in that they see people as having an instinctual deficit that is compensated for by culture. In other words they see culture as a substitute for our lack of instincts. If you remove the structure provided by norms and values (i.e. culture) people are left in a state of anomie (borrowing from Durkheim), which Berger and Luckmann view as a state of meaninglessness and terror.

Well, I mean, Buddhism had it first, but since that does not count towards Western science, this is the thing. Especially with people ideologizing the idea that everything is a social construct and abusing the concept towards political or social activist goals, quotes like "not all constructions are equally valid" and that "Not to be able to distinguish reality from ideology is actually the clinical definition of schizophrenia" are the sound of reasoning we definetly need these days.

Yes, I agree! I stumbled upon this subject because I was independently proposing a similar model for the scientific West but inspired by Buddhism. Story Immersion and Narrative engagement are different facets of the mental construction of reality, including the Self. I am hooked!

@6:20 Those 3 bearded men from latin america wanted some sort of Social engineering (political science) project, similar to the 1920s the government of the Soviet Union embarked on a campaign to fundamentally alter the behavior and ideals of Soviet citizens, to replace the old social frameworks of the Russian Empire with a new Soviet culture, and to develop the New Soviet man. Commissars became agents of social engineering. The Cultural Revolution (CR), formally known as the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, was a sociopolitical movement in the People's Republic of China (PRC). It was launched by Mao Zedong in 1966 and lasted until his death in 1976 In India, social engineering was effectively done in the state of Bihar, on a grand scale, to unify different castes after 2005. In his political science book, The Open Society and Its Enemies, volume I, The Spell of Plato (1945), Karl Popper made a distinction between the principles of 'what he called "piecemeal social engineering" and Utopian social engineering..

Society is more than just a social construction. The Bible had a tremendous impact on society but you cannot say the Bible is just a social construction. The Bible makes distinctive claims that are set it above a social construction.

He makes a valid point though. At what level does divine inspiration and revelation, be it in the Bible or from a a saint or a shaman, influence the construction of reality???
