The perfect ending: Decimus buys a sack of pineapples from the new land, takes it back to Ancient Rome and gives his superior one to taste. The superior is amazed and word spreads. Trajan wants to see the discovery, tries a pineapple and is impressed. And that's how Decimus met Trajan and how a pineapple ended up on a Roman painting.

drama is an art, but this transcends it. The very idea of taking an already ornate idea of a story and implementing your years of knowledge on language and culture on the ancient world and more importantly Latin makes this something that moves beyond just an interpretation of a situation or tall tale but what may be the most authentic view of what such a time could behold, articulated through a narrative. I adore media today, as an artist but I have forever been interested in history, as a Scot it's odd to think that my Celtic tongue(Gàidhlig) that was spread across my country from Eilean-Siar to Gretna is now today just in the pockets of the Highlands as an enclosed language used by those who still know it, I have always felt estranged from that idea and so whilst my time in drama has always been focused on the greater idea of storytelling I have always believed that if a story can give insight towards what was of a period of a time, you could say that it's fairer to tell a story in the view of history then total fantasy for the sake of provoking and inspiring those who watch. parts like the Germanic man's inability to see a modern German as german, show the complete foreignism and alien feeling that one may be be incompassed by when dealing with another person that to them cannot be of their culture, as to alot of cultures what was their "Culture" was hard to say as some would have been near to or dare I say identical compared to others from an outside perspective of course; however I don't mean to say that culture was in the past, I would never say that, what I mean is that what we see today as modern cultures would have been so hard for others in history to see, we know and recongise the connections between germans, Danes, Norwegians, Swedes, and the English, but from when these cultures diverged to the cultures they mingled with there would come a time that at one point, the averge person of one of these cultures no longer saw the others as of the same group, with only scholars understanding the greater culture groups to a T, this all with exceptions Scandanavian cultures all diverging from Norse, and England being invaded and influenced by oh so many. my relative point is that when media portrays history and its people we see so much of that new culture in the old, that it can feel detached from what it's said to mimic and this isn't really a bad thing, media needs to draw connections as cultures came from the very civilizations they are showing, though what I'm getting at is that your video and this entire series is an outstanding commentary on what is a good story that can show culture accurately and spark the curiosity of those who do not wonder "What have we lost" to history but "What have we gained" these cultures so distinctive and fascinating to explore, to ask what life was like for these people, Romans may be gone but the consequences of their existence from Christianity to technology and language has been felt from today, and beyond that. PS: Love the outtakes.

It's surprising that to a Speaker of Modern German Gothic sounds this familiar despite being on a veeeery different branch of the Germanic language family tree (also nice work with the Gothic dialogue, really on point with grammar as well as pronunciation)
@ScorpioMartianus Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I don’t know much about Gothic, but I was also surprised by the similarity to Proto-West-Germanic. That is in fact why my colleagues recommended Gothic for this character - a well attested language - rather than just making up my own version of PWG. The lack of final T however gives it away as being not the ancestor of English.

I am a Korean who started studying Latin on my own two years ago because of you. My English isn't good so I didn't understand much of your videos, but watching it made me want to learn Latin. I followed a lot of your guidance on how to pronounce classical Latin. There are very few people studying Latin in Korea. Only some Catholics, or people interested in ancient languages, learn it. Some people asked me, "Why do you learn a language no one speaks?" Others mistakenly thought Latin was a Romance language(s) or Spanish. (Because Korean language, like Japanese, does not strictly distinguish between singular and plural, there is a possibility that the word 'Romance language[s]' may be mistaken for the name of a certain language.) I have been studying Latin study books written by Korean scholars and LLPSI (including Fabulae Syrae). It made me happy that I could understand some of the Latin conversation in this video even without subtitles.

Hey, I’ve always thought that a movie or TV series about an ancient Roman time traveling to our time would be great! He would probably be terrified, and a team of historians and linguists would be required to bring him up to date. His comments on our society would be gold, about things that changed a lot, and those that didn’t change at all.

I can tell Luke put a lot of effort into this. I especially like how he incorporated his new mustache into the Gothic character. And I didnt expect the turn at the end. Also, was this his way of telling us that he is now practicing Gothic/Old East Germanic too? Luke should collaborate with someone like Rafael from the Metatron channel (who is also residing in the US now) to dress up in lorica and play the part of another legionary, a comrade of Rufus.
@ScorpioMartianus Жыл бұрын
I learned a bit of Gothic to do this video. I hope to continue as it’s very fun. It would be wonderful if Metatron and I ever get to collaborate in such a way. Our home bases in the US are actually pretty far apart, but it’s not impossible.

@@ScorpioMartianus I think it's funny how you the American live in Italy now with an Italian partner, and he the Sicilian now lives in the US with an American wife; you reversed. And I saw in another comment here you said that you must keep the Roman armor in the US, so Raf being over here in the same country at least could help the logistics for that. A scenario I imagine for this is a split in the story, where it follows both Rufus in the future and the Professor now stuck in the past. Another legionary (played by Raf) discovers the Professor unconscious along the side of the trail while looking for his comrade Rufus. He awakens the odd looking German and interrogates him about where the Roman he was stalking now is. The professor finds the camera Rufus dropped while still recording and watches the video back. He then starts to freak out after realizing that he is stuck in that time without his device. The legionary then takes him away as prisoner. Meanwhile in the future, Rufus is having some kind of adventure in Little Italy NYC and trying to communicate with the locals in their bizarre vulgar Latin.
