Louis walked out into the sun, not because of Armand, but because of Claudia. Armand said Claudia never loved him, and that triggered a memory which caused him to try to commit suicide.

The performances in this episode were absolutely outstanding across the board. Eric Bogosian brings such depth to Daniel. He is great with the snark and snappy one-liners, but he also showed in this episode (not for the first time) a depth of emotion that is fantastic. I think he often gets forgotten because of the talent of the other actors around him and the fact that their characters are flashier and fantastical- but he is just amazing as Daniel. Props also to Luke Brandon Field, who plays young Daniel. He is doing an incredible job of portraying a younger version of the character that reflects the performance of the actor playing present day Daniel. This show is so incredible, and I am so afraid that we won't be getting a Season 3. 😩 Come on, AMC- do us a solid and renew it.

I think Louis' the type of person who confuses drama with passion and gets restless with a partner who is content and doesn't want to pursue conflict, is eager to please you. That's his bullshit. Armand has a deep fear of being unwanted, unlovable, and desperately wants to please his partner, and Louis uses that to manipulate him emotionally, that's bullshit too. But Armand won't beat the shit out of his partner because he's jealous or rejected, he'll just punish him emotionally instead of hurting him physically; he won't hit you or yell at you, but he'll play some really fucked games with your head, and that's his bullshit. But, I can understand the motivation, if you had the power to just make your partner forget why they're mad at you, forget that thing you said that you can't take back, forget what they don't like about you, it would be hard to resist, wouldn't it? If you had the power to make your competition vanish off the face of the earth and not pay for it, you might be tempted.

There are no heroes in this story. We connect to the characters that speak to us and that's fine. Louis, Claudia, Lestat, Daniel, and Armand have all done horrific things. Anne isn't known for making characters that black and white. They're all shades of grey. That being said, I hope you guys keep reacting to Interview. We need people to keep talking about the show!
@anylove370
@anylove370 Ай бұрын
Except those aren't Anne's characters. I know she created them, but Louis especially is very different from the one she wrote and later got bored with. Louis is the titular vampire here, it's mostly his story being told, which matters when it comes to how sympathetic he is portrayed. I'm not saying that there are heroes and villains in the show, they are after all vampires who feed on humans and thus monsters by definition, but the show is pretty clearly showing how Louis and Lestat and Louis and Armand's relationship are abusive, how both these men thrive on controlling and isolating Louis and causing him harm under the guise of love
@LoLovesLife
@LoLovesLife Ай бұрын
If you feel differently that's fine but to me these will always be Anne's characters. It wasn't simply boredom that drove the changes to Louis in later books. Anne was processing the enormous grief of her child's passing when she wrote IWTV. She didn't take a methodical, linear method to her storytelling and that's part of the beauty of her work. The show has done a fantastic job at pulling inspiration from the entire catalog of the Vampire Chronicles and at mirroring the ways in which Anne would continue to change and develop her characters as she continued to change as an individual. As far as the relationships I agree. The show is showing us that all of the relationships are flawed in their own ways while also being compelling, passionate, thrilling, and toxic all at once.

Louis is the heart of the story and eveyones' attempts to keep him happy makes them misreable. Claudia is tragic but she keeps fighting for her happy ending. What I like is that this confirms that we dont know how much Armand had messed with Louis memories. Yall are holding onto the first season of Lestat despite knowing Louis is an unreliable narrator and that Claudias diaries arent 100% true. Even Armands version of Lestat doesnt make sense. I hope we get a third season with Lestats pov. No matter what tho Louis and Lestat are fated to be together. They are soulmates. It was classic case of right person but wrong time. Season 2 louis is more aligned with doing things similar to Lestat and is more carefree. He wasnt ready to handle Lestat back then but now he is. Maybe we will get an appearance in Paris when Louis and Claudia are on trial.
@NyikoDoris
@NyikoDoris Ай бұрын
But what would make Lestat’s version the best version? Everyone sees people and themselves differently. Louis might not believe he whines but to Armand, he loves throwing a pity party. Armand might not think himself bad for erasing Louis memories of San Francisco but instead as a compassionate lover who took the painful memory of a suicide attempt away from Louis however Louis would see it as an unforgivable betrayal of his trust in their relationship and his own mind. There’s no character who can tell a completely unbiased and 100% true story because they are telling THEIR story. If anyone has some semblance of being the closest to ‘reliable’ on how Lestat’s torture felt, it’s Claudia’s diaries because they were meant for HER. Not to be a cautionary tale. Not to set the record straight. They were just her thoughts on the situation she found herself in and even then she would obviously paint the parent who was nurturing in a better light as a child, even after he chose his partners over her (Louis) because she felt unwanted her whole human life vs the parent who himself was raised terribly and continues the crude parenting that reminds her of her human family (Lestat)
@Cool_beansmh
@Cool_beansmh Ай бұрын
@@NyikoDoris I never said Lestats pov would be the best just that it would flesh out his character in a way that no one else can do. Get inside his head the way we have with Louis, Armand, and Claudia. We are able to connect to everyone better because of it except Lestat. He’s only been painted as a bad guy which is far from true. All these characters are meant to be gray. No one is innocent or purely good, not even Claudia. I disagree about Armand erasing Louis memories even if it was his suicide attempt. Its a different level of desperation and control. Hes not even getting the real Louis, the one with all the memories and CHOOSES him. He erased the fact Armand reached out to Lestat and the emotions it stirred in Louis. He manipulated him to staying with him all the way up until Dubai. If he has to erase memories to not let Louis think too deep about his feelings then thats not love. Hes desperate and knows he will never truly be loved. Armand hasnt shown he can love, just that he cant be alone. Thats why he stuck with the coven for so long bc he has nothing better going for him. Hes almost a borderline villain tbh. And this episode has us wondering what other memories he has messed with, how far back does the manipulation go? Also, Claudia hated Lestat ever since she killed Charlie in season 1 so her diaries were also incredibly biased against him. I like how this season showed that her diaries arent completely true. That she exaggerates and doesnt always mean what she writes. Just emotions in the moment. The best a viewer can do is see all povs and piece together their own opinion. Thats why I say we need Lestats.
@NyikoDoris
@NyikoDoris Ай бұрын
@@Cool_beansmh and you know what? I hope you guys do get that third season and get to have Lestat tell his side, but what you need to maybe know is because some things were adapted in a different way for the show so ‘unreliable narrator’ now goes from “maybe this person is remembering a few things a bit differently than they happened” to “they are lying 100%, Lestat is the only one with the TRUTH.” I assumed that’s what your point was and I shouldn’t have done that but that’s the vibe a lot of people have about iwtv, that they just biding their time until they get to Lestat “telling us the truth” and it’s put me on the defensive. I am apologizing for assuming that’s what you meant.
@Cool_beansmh
@Cool_beansmh Ай бұрын
@@NyikoDoris Yeah i think its because book readers are hoping the show will adapt more than just the first book. Since the show is covering small amounts of other books so its like a tease. Lestat is a fan fav for a reason so of course majority are gonna want a pov season or at least episode for him. His book was the most popular for a reason. Obviously the show is changing a good amount so no one is expecting exact adaptations. Im not a book reader tho, its just everything said and shown about him has been very biased. Again no one is good, in fact to a degree they are all evil since they are vamps after all. Idk why you seem slighted that ppl like his character so much. If we are talking books, hes on par with the same morals as louis but louis doesnt know this since he cant read his mind. Show wise, stuff just doesnt add up. Again, as a viewer we need all povs and make our own conclusions that way. Idk why you seem against getting his pov. Its just more world building if we do get it. Without lestat we dont get more storylines from the book that are more interesting than louis life. Like Queen of the damned with Akashas character (the one aaliyah played in the movie). I just like the universe that came from the first book, and with this show we have a chance to see more adapted with the tweaks the show created. I just want more of this show and not just only louis story. Hes one of the more dull vamps when you tap into the vamp world. Even claudia is more interesting despite her story being short.

@@Cool_beansmh and again I’m apologizing for making an assumption about you. I think the reason I’m so defensive/protective over Loumandia to an extent is because, you know, on for example the CW they would cast people of color and like the main character is while there is racist rhetoric regarding those people of color and their social media crew will not call out the blatant racism the character/actors face when they are in a race-swapped role. I understand that It’s not your fault that I have trauma from my former long-term-hostage- situation with The Flash and their disregard for their black female lead. I love your pointing out Claudia’s being the saddest story. She lived with an abusive aunt, then with an abusive Lestat, an abusive Bruce, then the coven. Lestat made her knowing the rules against turning a child because their minds ultimately wouldn’t be able to handle living out eternity in a child’s body, as a way of still controlling and manipulating Louis. And she was important to Louis as long as her existence made him feel the drama and toxicity he’s addicted to. Never was she a priority in her own right, except with Charlie. And because Lestat intentionally did not teach her (nor Louis) how to control herself and harness her powers, disaster was inevitable.

@kev121 Hence why Louis will forever live with the immense guilt of not appreciating, valuing, and protecting Claudia. That’s why in this episode, he tried to take his own life. Despite having incredible abilities such as super speed and telepathy, thinking properly and making rational decisions are not their strong points. Think about it. They generally keep making bad decision after bad decision after bad decision, and they seem almost surprised when things get much worse for them. And that especially goes for Louis. In The Vampire Lestat (Book 2) it's said that all his life Armand has been a slave/addict to something. First to his early religious faith, later to Marius his Maker, and after that to the Children of Satan. What we're seeing now in the show is yet another phase of the cycle: Armand's enslavement/addiction to Louis. He can't break free of this toxic relationship because Louis is his current drug of choice. And that's a big reason why why in Book 2 Lestat, not wanting to be that, ran away from Armand!

I think all this show is asking us to do is to be open to having complex feelings about the characters and their actions, and be open to seeing both the good and the bad in people. I know Armand is terrible, but I love when he does evil things! He’s my favorite manipulative gremlin! But I also find him wildly sympathetic and entertaining. Everyone is both a hero and a villain, depending on who’s telling the story. And they’re vampires! They’ve got all the time in the world to do good things, bad things, and questionable things. So much to say....First lol of the episode, ‘breaking into the library, hypnotise security, as one does, to lay down & look at the ceiling.’ Daniel: Hot. LMAO Loved Daniel’s example of syntax….Louis is circling something he doesn’t want to say. In 1973-Daniel really seemed like he was hot for Louis & expected to have sex with him. I defintely don’t like the cutting away scenes. Did the two of them lose time or did someone make them forget what happened next? Daniel seriously thought they had sex so Louis asked him if he wanted to now lol I wish he answered him! He was offering something off the menu. I have to praise Luke Brandon Field as young Daniel. He looks so much like older Daniel! I saw an interview that Eric Bogosian didn’t know that Luke as watching him work while he was preparing to be the younger Daniel. His mannerisms, the way he speaks, everything. And they’re not even related, amazing! “Are you the Zodiac killer?!” Hahaha cuz he shows him his fangs? What a scene when he asks for ‘the gift’. Daniel is all hyped up on cocaine, pills & whatever else. “Give it to me” Oh nooooooo that did it. I would think that Louis would be ‘old’ enough to have more control over himself. The berating between Louis & Armand was awful. They were so cruel to each other. Boring, dull, beige, so hurtful. I think Louis has always been mentally crippled & never should have been turned. Yes, he drank from a drugged up Daniel so it all was in his system, talking to himself then going suicidal. God, that looked painful!!! His skin literally falling off his body. The make-up in this series Is epic! The writing, the acting, the editing, everything! What is AMC doing, not promoting this Show? These actors need to be recognized! Armand is such a jealous person. All he wanted was to be loved & have security in his life becuz of his abusive backstory. So, of course, he grew up super needy. What did Armand mean by, asking Daniel, “I’ve been calling for you for some time?” What??? For what? Why?? So it definitely seems like Armand manipulated both of Louis & Daniel’s memories. Louis looked so pissed when Armand comes back, after his ‘lunch’. My new favorite episode!

Armand's line about "calling" Daniel refers to how canonically he finds his victims. He says he calls to those who are suffering and already long for death. As though he is doing something merciful. From this scene it looks like he uses the Mind Gift to convince his victims. By carving through their thoughts and memories to find what he needs to bring about these kind of thoughts. Why the charade? It reminds me of Claudia's line calling Louis on his BS: "Is that what you tell yourself yourself?".

I think when Armand says "I've been calling to you for a very long time" he's meaning his role as death... That ENTIRE conversation they're talking in metaphors for how death will feel... So death is what has been calling to Daniel. Not that Armand has been psychically calling to him. Though, I understand why that conversation may have been misinterpreted as such.... But it just does not make sense if you're thinking he's literally been calling to Daniel.

Louis lost his little brother and his family turn on him, Claudia was always meant to be the replacement for that, just like in real life Anne Rice try to replace the void her daughter left on her, but just like Claudia, her daughter will remain a little girl forever and the best is to let her go to rest in peace.

I love Armand. He's probably my favorite character, due to how messed up he is--his psychological complexity. And in saying he's my favorite, that's not me condoning a lot of his choices, it's just me saying I find him insanely compelling, and so beautiful to watch (Assad Zaman is amazing). IMO Armand's primary motivating force is a fear of abandonment. So I think that he is basically always weighing every choice by what is going to ensure that he doesn't have to be alone in life. Even if that means trading one relationship for another, or securing backups that he can keep in the background until he needs them. And if faced with two relationship choices, one that is of questionable security, and one that seems more of a sure thing, he will always choose the more secure (in his opinion) one. You've already watched all of season 2, so I'm sure you saw this later on in Paris, and after the big reveal about Armand's role in everything. Armand just places relational security on this pedestal. It is the most important thing to him, and he will degrade and subjugate himself and/or manipulate and destroy others if that is what it takes for him to maintain those relationships. I also think this is why I'm so compelled by the idea of him and older Daniel being a thing. Older Daniel is a mirror who mercilessly forces Armand to see the truth of himself, and breaks through his deceptions of others, and that is extremely uncomfortable for Armand, but I also think it is compelling for him. In Armand's past he has always been nothing but a vessel onto which people project whatever they want him to be, but Daniel 'sees' him, and at his current age Daniel is also not really will to put up with B.S.. He's seen and knows all of Armand's motivations and little tricks. Armand can no longer play those games with Daniel. So this is me keeping my fingers crossed for some Devil's Minion in S3, or S4.

@@yourlittledogtoo Good point. But, somehow, Armand wasn’t able to control everything about Louis because he (Louis) still has some mental autonomy from him (Armand). Otherwise, he (Louis) wouldn’t have possibly thought to and been able to reach out to Daniel after almost 50 years for another interview.

Great reaction guys! So fun to watch! I just wanted to add that the show might be drawing from Claudia's true feelings about Louis from the books, or her diaries. Her writings show she loved but also deeply hated Louis. Or like Armand said, she didn't love Louis like Lestat and Armand did. She was essentially using Louis most of the time because he was easiest to manipulate. She was even planning to kill him but said: ""Louis will do as I wish, even unto the very destruction of Lestat, which I plan in every detail. Whereas Lestat would never cooperate with my designs upon Louis. So there my loyalty lies, under the guise of love even in my own heart." Can't really blame her for those feelings though. Just makes her even more layered. I feel like all vamps are just fucked up, with severe mental issues, all inflicting pain on each other, but also filled with too many intense wants and feelings. Here is some more interesting excerpts from her diary: "Perhaps in the court of my heart, I hold Louis far more accountable for my present state than ever I could blame my impulsive and simple Lestat. The fact is, one must die for this or the pain in me will never be scaled off, and immortality is but a monstrous measurement of what I shall suffer till the world revolves to its ultimate end. One must die so that the other will become ever more dependent upon me, ever more completely my slave".

I'm sorry, but i found funny seeing people being shock by these characters, my absolute favorite characters will always be lestat and Armand, and i will NEVER hate them for the evil things they do, because they're monsters, I don't see them as a would see a human character yk, and the point of the show is this, monsters doing the most terrible things ever and yet, feeling strong emotions, they're similar to us, but not like us at all, and that's the beauty of things, I want to see their absolute worse

Glad I found this, NGL I've been a little conflicted because the characterization of most of my beloved characters has been a little too off from the books but having the constant reminders in season2 that Louis "misremembers" things and that his "memory" might have been "edited out" by a third party has my brain going:................................. YES

Content warning: spoilers for the novels and basic plot of Interview included here. . . . . . . . . . . . . . So, with his suicide attempt, it is actually a scene from later on in the series: Merrick (VC #7). I won't go into details, but both that scene and this one have a lot of similarities. But yeah, goes back to how Claudia actually feels. With Armand and Daniel, the torture scene is also similar to their relationship in The Queen of the Damned (VC #3). Granted, theirs was more of BDSM sprinkled versus this one. But yeah, another interesting way to build up on the source material.

No. A whole lot of no here... Armand is protecting Armand. Armand wants to keep Louis and keep this relationship, literally no matter what, in whatever shape he can have it in. This episode has confirmed what alot of us have been saying since s1, and what Rolin himself has already confirmed. From the beginning Louis has been telling a "story" that he himself has been told. Entire sections of his life, including his time with Lestat in Nola has been removed and re-written/edited versions have been added in. Louis didn't remember anything after he attacked Daniel during the 1st interview, until this moment. Which means he didn't have the memory of anything that Armand said or did that night, including that he knows where Lestat is, etc. Louis does not even have the memory of the theatre fire, in Paris. Alot of his memory is missing or mixed around dating all the way back to the beginning. So alot of what we've seen so far, alot of what Louis himself has been thinking is the truth, is not. Now we don't know what actually happened, and what didn't, what's the truth and what's not. Louis most likely doesn't know what really happened back in Nola so now we don't know what really happened with Lestat, or who is the real Lestat. Because Louis doesn't know, because of Armand. Which means alot of the things Lestat did to both of them, may not have happened at all, alot of things that did happen Louis may not be able to remember, because he can't access the memory of it. What really actually went down in Paris, he clearly doesn't actually know. Most likely only knows what Armand has told him. Or whatever memories Armand has allowed him to keep, or whatever memories Armand has edited. We don't know if even leaving Paris with him and being his companion to begin with was even Louis choice, meaning we don't know if he chose not to be with him because of all he did, and Armand didn't just simply wipe and change his memory so that Louis believed something completely different happened. I'm not saying that happened, but now we really don't know. We have no way of knowing now if Louis has ever tried to leave before and Armand just simply wiped his memory of it. We now don't know if what Louis has been telling of their time in Paris, so far, is fully true or not. And the thing is, because of what Armands done we don't know, because Louis himself doesn't know. What we do know, is; Armand alone, is the only one in this situation who knows the truth. And he's doing whatever he wants with it. We do know that Louis has literally no "real" power and definitely no agency in his life (with Armand). We do know that Armand is literally the reason they're still together and have stayed together this long, because there's no way that 1st interview is the first or only time Louis' exploded and Armand has wiped his memory. Think of it as someone who's keeping the other person sedated. Any time Louis starts to get his real memories back, he spirals, because he remembers ALL that Armand has done, and he remembers the REAL Lestat, so Armand essentially "drugs" him again. To keep him "docile" and staying with him, to keep him from going to Lestat. We know, from the recovered memories, that Armand knows where Lestat is, knows what's wrong with him and why he can't come to Louis, and he's keeping Lestat from finding Louis, and keeping Louis from knowing anything about Lestat... Sam Reid has confirmed that from that phone-call (mind call), Lestat thinks Louis is now dead. And it's clear that Louis thinks Lestat hasn't come to him because he no longer loves him, because of Nola and everything that went down in Paris. Armand knows the truth, but he's instead not letting Louis know. So he's letting him just believe that Lestat isn't coming to him because he doesn't want him anymore (which couldn't be further from the truth)... And that's why he refused to tell Louis, that Lestat was saying "I love you". That whole thing was litearlly Armand psychologically torturing them both. We know that Louis clearly doesn't know probably ANY of what Armand has really done to him, or Claudia or Lestat. We know that Armand has been consistently painting himself in the best light, and essentially throwing everyone else under the bus, including Louis. We know that a good deal of his story about when he met Lestat just isn't true. We know that Armand knows the truth or a truth about Claudia, that Louis doesn't know... And the list goes on and on... ALL of this and alot more are why I say don't let anyone make you feel bad about not liking Armand. Or don't let anyone make you feel like you can't have or just speak your own opinions about him. Like, they're fictional characters, it's honestly not that serious but... there's a very REAL reason, for all of it. And it all goes back to Armand. Alot of the ideas that a lot of people have made up in their heads about this character are all about to be basically detonated. As the actual truth starts really coming out, and we start really seeing the treachery. Now don't get me wrong, there's also nothing wrong with loving the character either, again, they're just fictional characters. But no one should be making anyone feel like they can't dislike or even just voice their opinions about a character. So yeah, I say feel however you want and speak however you want because BABYYYY it's all his dirty laundry is about to be exposed for EVERYONE to see. And I can't wait 👌🏽 There's just so SOO many things that happened in this episode, so many questions that were answered, and so much information given. I'm still trying to bounce back from it, because it destroyed me. And am trying to pull away from this fandom for like a week, because there's so many people in this fandom who are just ass backwards about everything, but especially about Louis. It's doing my head in.

Armand is betrayal ....and yet ...why is a lover lying to you always worse than you lying to yourself hahahaha it bothers me that Louis has changed from being a more targeted killer {only people who wronged him and were abusive } to street boys ??? how did that happen ?...thats a big leap to me ,to believe it was just him getting older as a vampire ? has Armand been making him kill all his human companions ? I don't remember Louis being bloodthirsty in general /you know in all these encounters ,he could have just drank some and let them go in a drunken swoon
@RowensARTstudio
@RowensARTstudio Ай бұрын
@@whatadollslife Well see the thing is, about Louis lying to himself vs Armand lying to him... because of what Armand has done, how is Louis suppose to know what actually is a "lie" and what's not. What is actually true about himself, and what is Armands self insert. Like he literally can't trust or believe anything now, because now the only one who can even say one way or the other, if anything is "true" or not. Is Armand. And Armand can't be trusted at all... So that's why this is soo much worse, than just Louis lying to himself or not remembering. And then of course, you lying to yourself or choosing to be delusional about something. Or choosing to believe or not believe something, about yourself from yourself. That all falls under your agency and autonomy of self. Your right to choose. When it is someone else, especially a lover, it violates your agency, your bodily autonomy and takes away you're right of choice. Especially if their reasons for it, are self-serving. Because while neither is "right" or okay, there's still a big difference between; lying to protect someone and lying to protect yourself. Especially at the detriment and harm to someone else. And about Louis, and his feeding habits, I think it kind of depends on what specifically you're referring to. Because if you're referring to him essentially mauling men, back in Paris. That's a mental illness spiral, essentially. He's literally talking about blacking out, he's hallucinating, etc. If you're talking about in '73 in san francisco, it's basically a Vampire version of drug addiction/abuse. In an attempt to numb the pain, and escape from reality, etc... If you're talking about him just going specifically after "young boys", it's him taking after Lestat, most likely in an attempt to feel closer to him (or is it, cause can't trust anything he remembers about Lestat either, now)... It also is Louis just aging and feeding more, which in turn is him becoming more of a Vampire. Shedding more of his humanity off over time, which does happen to Vampires in general in the books. As they age... But now, if you're talking about Louis just in general, as a character. So up until Queen of the Damned, he was coined the most "predatory" of the Vampires, while still being the most human. But in the books, up until that point, he did not really have a preference. Essentially, when he was hungry anyone who'd cross his path he'd eat them. Regardless of anything. So to be fair, this is actually closer to what his character would probably be, in the books. But only up to that point. Because after that point, Anne Rice establishes that Louis specifically hunts/eats people that he feels essentially wish for death. Or are ready to die. "partial to an easful death", would be more in line with later book Louis, than Armand. -- Sorry, really didn't mean this one to get this long. Lord...

Armand is holding Louis hostage. I think Louis and Lestat want to be together, but Armand is keeping them apart. Armand might have Lestat in the dungeon, controlling Louis to stay with him. Just a tip, you don't know how to stay in the moment. The times when you should be paying attention you are talking and missing the moment. By the way, I like Armand, Louis and Lestat. It's okay to like all three

He didn't want Daniel to remember. He said, We'll have him saying 'What happened next?' in no time. Meaning we'll get him to stop prying and digging and get back to asking basic questions like he did when he was a young drugged out reporter. And once they break him after he mocks Louis after recalling reading Lestat's letter and he goes after him about Alice, the next question he asks is "What happened next?"
