I get the chance to interview Dan Trudgian while I'm in the area. I'm going to assume everyone knows who he is. When I first got my caravan, Dan's videos were a great help and since started my KZbin channel his videos have been recommended to me all the time.

Same! Have you watched any of Daniel Brown's v-logs "Sort of Interesting" - also Dan the Man? He is the first ever Narrowboat V-logger (Narrowboatboy initially 2012-2017.) He's back again on a new, slightly longer narrowboat, albeit less quaint than "Tilly!" He also has a model-railway channel. 23K following! I give our intrepid Karavan traveller Karen a plug ocassionally on Dan's Channel too - tee hee! Chur!

What a sweet relaxed interview! I have fond memories of caravanning in NZ as a child in the 70's, technology has moved on. We now hire motorhomes when we go back to Kiwiland each year. I am almost six feet tall too (180cm) , so can relate to your surprise when meeting others who are taller!

That was such a fun conversation Karen, it’s so nice to see you tubers together doing interviews like this and your a natural when it comes to asking questions. I liked the twin cam set up too, you’d think you’d got a film crew to do it, but of course you’ve done it yourself. The technical side of your videos is very good, I watch on a 40 inch tv and the quality is as good as the tv signal I get for the main uk channels, I’m very impressed. Well done, very much enjoyed that video.

@@TravellingK No honestly Karen it's fine on the TV. All the smart tv's sold in the UK have the you tube app on, it's very easy to watch stuff and as long as the video quality is high, yours is HD, so it's excellent, then its not much different from watching the BBC or itv. I'm even more impressed that you stopped filming to change camera angle, I honestly thought you must have been using 2 cameras.

I've just subscribed. Fantastic interview Karen. Dan Trudgian is somewhat a hero for me. It is he, his family and his videos that inspired me from my hospital bed to visualise myself sitting in the caravan we had just put a deposit on. I'd had a devastating stroke that I should never have survived from and I was paralysed down the right side of my body. My speech wasn't like it used to be and if there was one thing my mother taught me it was to face my fears and not worry about what people would think about me! A couple of months later With Dans encouragement, my channel was born. But it was eight months before I could tell the complete story. Without my channel and the support my subscribers give me I would certainly not be where I am today! To give something back any money I make from the channel goes to The Stroke Association so I don't ask for money I just ask people to watch a few adverts! On a last note, Dan organised Trudgefest last year where subscribers could meet the vloggers. Not only was it a fantastic success, Dan presented me with the money raised by everyone there and online so I could give it to The Stroke Association. I hope everyone who reads this will be even more inspired by this modest man. I owe him so much!! You can see the whole story on my channel and the video is called "Stroke survival and how Mr Dan Trudgian made my dreams come true" - Lin

Had a wee chuckle. Every time we head out with our van it’s 5 miles of cringing down narrow, twisty backroads that are full of blind corners, pinch points and sticky out branches. It’s a challenge on a good run but add to the mix visitors who are too busy staring at the scenery and farmers with large tractors and implements in tow and boy does it get ‘fun’! Fortunately several years of driving large touring coaches down Scottish highland roads has given me great observation skills and nerves of steel.

Just to clarify , as do not want to put off new drivers wishing to tow a caravan, Anyone who has past their uk driving test after the 1st of January 1997 can tow a caravan without sitting additional test for towing, as long the combined total mass weight of the car and caravan does not exceed 3500kg also the caravan does not exceed the towing capacity of the car.

@evdru9028
@evdru9028 5 жыл бұрын
Sydney Wicks if your car weight is 3500kg, yes your trailer must not exceed 750kg but as most family cars are only 1400kg, luggage 400kg and towing capacity of 1200kg, making the total weight of 3000kg. which is under the 3500kg max, this still gives you a good selection of caravans to choose from.

Great tips for navigating for both the novice and professional. Its interesting to hear the differences in the driving licenses between countries also. In the states we dont have restrictions to speak of for campers/caravans even though i think we should. Such a sweet interview. This guy was great and he did know how to light up your Funny Bone. That was fun to watch. Thank you for another great Vlog...Vic

Oh and interesting hearing about the US license set-up! I heard somewhere some states have different rules?
@vicmiller7191
@vicmiller7191 5 жыл бұрын
@@TravellingK Yes they do when it comes to length or objects or trailers being pulled. I do know that the state of New Jersey has differant rules from say New York State. But many of the rules apply to the professional trucking industry. We do have the federal guidlines for the interstate highways and also each State can have its own set of guidlines which can supersede the federal guidlines and be more restrictive. If they have similar guidelines then the more restrictive is the guidline to be enforced. And if that sounds confusing, it is for us who live here.. too. Lol...Vic

I charge my Outlander PHEV from my caravan all the time. But I agree most of the campsites are still unaware of what’s coming. I’ve seen a cracking caravan that has a large lithium battery pack built into the floor. Now you can use it when parked at home to power your home and even charge it from the solar on your roof. Plus you can also use it as a range extender on your electric car when towing. It’s mighty expensive at the moment but will only get cheaper as it becomes the norm.

That was a nice interview I enjoyed it. 👍 I kind of wish the caravan industry would address the boonbocking issue. But then maybe you don't have the countryside to do any real boondocking. It just seems so unrealistic to me to have to tote your clean water, the grey water and the cassettes to empty them. When here in the states you pull up to the dump station hook up your tanks and dump them and then fill up the fresh water either at the next park or before you go boondocking. Sorry got off topic. Good interview.
@TravellingK
@TravellingK 5 жыл бұрын
Sounds like boondocking doesn’t happen in the UK. Maybe a little in Scotland? It’s called freedom camping in NZ and more of a thing 😀
@johninokla2635
@johninokla2635 5 жыл бұрын
@@TravellingK , yes, I remember now freedom camping. Still it would be easier for everyone if you had tanks you could empty right before you leave the camp grounds and since they would be empty they wouldn't add that much weight to the caravan. Even if you have full tanks from boondocking you empty them the first chance you get when you go to town and visit a dump station.
@MrSnookerballs
@MrSnookerballs 5 жыл бұрын
are you talking motorhomes or caravans. having waste tanks built into caravans we wouldn't have the vehicles heavy enough to tow them.
@johninokla2635
@johninokla2635 5 жыл бұрын
@@MrSnookerballs, you are correct about the vehicles. Motorhomes and caravans both have waste tanks here. I keep trying to compare other countries to what we have here in the states. Most RV parks have sewer hookups for every space so the tanks are empty when you leave the park. I'll try to remember that we have totally different types of caravans.

Great interview - good questions and well made points :) google maps and street view are my go to too. If there’s anything that looks a bit dodgy from maps satellite view I “drive” the relevant bit virtually using street view and yep always check out what the turn looks like so that I don’t miss it whilst answering 50 bazillion questions from my kids or if hubby is with us justifying why I’m ignoring the sat nag (he doesn’t tow or navigate and can be a bad passenger!). Personally I didn’t think Dan was taller than expected when I met him, everyone’s taller than me though so that’s no surprise but was totally star struck nevertheless ;-) so glad you’re having a good time, been really enjoying your vids.

In reference to using an EV as a towing vehicle to tow a UK Built caravan , there is a slight problem with range at the present time, I currently drive a Tesla model X and three weeks a go I experimented with my family towing a 2200kg caravan over 500 kilometers , the range of the Tesla model X is around 300 miles on a full charge , but actually towing my current caravan cuts the driving distance in half down to an average of 180 miles, and then trying to find a charging station to charge your EV towing vehicle also means having to unhitch the caravan to be able charge the tow vehicle therefore your guests proposal to update electrification at UK Caravan Sites to accommodate EV's in the future is a great idea , but the EV Vehicle Range will have to double to enable towing caravans in the UK

Oh that’s very very interesting to know. Sounds like a few things need to be sorted before it’s more common to tow with an EV.

I enjoyed your interview with Dan. I picked up a few tips from some of his videos. I'm hoping that newcomers can learn something from my own content. Every content creator has something unique to offer from their own perspective. Google Streetview is useful. It is almost like being there. The other big issue with the UK streets are the numpty drivers who can't even drive let alone tow.

Hi - Karen you mention you checked that your NZ driving license was valid for the Uk - I have a US license and can drive 13000 kilos or tow 4545 kg - the only info on Gov Uk states non-residents can drive on their residency (US) licence for up to 12 months - and that's it - no conditions - I am experienced in RV's of 40ft and towing in other countries - I'm presuming I can do the same in the UK?

Reason why you can tow in UK: International licence (exchangeable): You can drive in the UK for up to 12 months on a licence issued in Gibraltar, Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man or a ‘designated country’ (Australia, Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Falkland Islands, Faroe Islands, Hong Kong, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland and Zimbabwe).

I drive HGV, the amount of times I've had to get out my truck to HELP the older people who have granddad rights with passing there CAT b after a certain date is unreal. I do not believe that if you pass your test before a date then you should be able to drive a cat C vehicle, very dangerous and people should have to sit a test before driving anything after your cat B!. :) Having grandfather rights does not give you experience or shows you are competent, 100% should need lessons and a test. :)
