It's funny watching this video now because back when it 1st aired I was only 7 years old. My older brother was around 12 and his friends would sleep over an watch Headbangers ball and me being the annoying little sister wanted to hang out with my big bro and his cool friends. One night I barged into his room and they were watching this interview. I had no idea who Kurt Cobain or Nirvana was yet an I asked my brother and his friends" Why is that guy dressed like a banana?" Lol..my brother got mad and kicked me out of his room. Now 25 years later I stumbled across this interview and seeing Kurt in that yellow ball gown and laughing because as a child I thought it was a damn banana costume. Later became a Nirvana fan but didn't see this interview again until recent years. Gotta love Kurt's sense of humor!

Nirvana always had a chip on their shoulder about what they considered the sexist homophobic macho rock scene. I'm sure that they had some preconceived notions about the Headbanger's Ball audience and Kurt was trying to be somewhat provocative by showing up in a dress. Krist mentioning that the bands he liked have good political opinions was another clue about where their mindset was.

Kris always displayed so much patience with the questions and the interviewers, it's remarkable. Not saying it was a rule, but there seemed to be a pattern where Kurt came over as defiant, sometimes slightly belligerent and Dave came across as cynical and already jaded. Good thing they had Kris in those interviews.

I still seem to feel the same way way as I did back when I was maybe 14 or 15 and saw this interview on TV; that Headbanger's Ball was a show that was becoming antiquated during the emergence of Nirvana and the grunge and alternative movement. And it was ever so subtly evident in this interview. Indeed the difference in generations can be seen when you visually compare the 80's look of Ricky vs the unpretentious t-shirt and jeans and flannels with no hairspray look of Nirvana and other grunge acts. The music Headbanger's Ball seemed to champion was the metal of the generations that came before and they'd gotten their start on hair metal bands of the 80's like Twisted Sister, and the LA scene of metal. onward towards the late 80's to early 90's you'd often see bands like Metallica, Slayer, Megadeath, Pantera and Sepultura, etc. But although Headbanger's Ball lost its relevance and was canceled around 94 or 5 as the grunge wave washed over the music scene, the hosts of the show still gave respect to the new generation of rock artists on the rise, as was also evident in the episode when Alice in Chains went to the Action Park water park with Headbanger's Ball too. That's something I appreciate. I think i took it for granted back then around the time Guns and Roses were ungracefully falling from relevance and bands like Metallica originally ripped on the new grunge bands that were coming out, before later on coming to appreciate and respect them and even morn them when they passed on. In summary when it's all said and done, rock music fans and bands share a camaraderie and respect for each other that, in the end, keeps the love of rock music alive across all generations.

+Christen Kimbell Yeah, so right. Recording TV programs on VHS was a ritual back then. But there was a long strech of time were those VHS tapes were obsolete, and the internet was not what it is in 2016. We've gone a long way with youtube and other streaming sites, collecting all those archives that were once taped by someone on VHS. One of the greatest perk of the "modern internet" is the archive. Everyone can now get educated on anything they want, including Nirvana. Or just get in nostalgia mood once in a while.

The MTV Headbangers Ball episode featuring Nirvana aired on October 25, 1991, and is notable for being one of the band's early television performances. This appearance came shortly after the release of their groundbreaking album "Nevermind," which would go on to change the landscape of rock music. During this episode, Nirvana performed several songs, including "Smells Like Teen Spirit," which had just begun to gain massive popularity. The performance showcased the band's raw energy and Kurt Cobain's distinctive vocal style, which resonated with the youth of the time. The episode also included interviews and segments that highlighted the grunge movement and the band's rise to fame. The Headbangers Ball was a significant platform for heavy metal and hard rock bands, and Nirvana's appearance marked a shift in the show's focus as grunge and alternative rock began to dominate the music scene in the early '90s. This performance is often remembered as a pivotal moment in the band's career and in the history of rock music.

"Nevermind" was released on September 24, 1991, by DGC Records. It was recorded at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, California, and Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin, during May and June of 1991. The album's production was handled by Butch Vig, who worked alongside the band members: Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, and Dave Grohl. "Nevermind" spawned several iconic singles, including "Smells Like Teen Spirit", "Come as You Are", "Lithium", and "In Bloom". The album cover, featuring a baby swimming towards a dollar bill on a fishhook, is indeed one of the most recognizable images in music history. It was designed by Robert Fisher. Nirvana promoted "Nevermind" through various performances and appearances, including on MTV, "Saturday Night Live", "Top of the Pops", and "Tonight with Jonathan Ross". They also performed at festivals like the Reading Festival in 1991 and 1992.

man I love the breeders. Such wonderful songs, very solid, palatable to the ear, get your gutty wutts all in a bit of a tingling sensation. very moving. I love the pixies but alot of their songs went a bit off in the bridges, much respect for what they did as a band though. I loved their rendition of the strange creepy erotic deranged testicle cheek girl in the radiator of that one movie "Eraserhead" I thought was so funny, "In Heaven everything is fine, you got your good things and I've got mine". They're rendition was very well executed. Simply powerful or that's my opinion anyway. It's good that Nirvana talked about those bands in those interviews. Otherwise I wouldn't have ever heard of them myself when I was a teenager. lived in too remote of a town, Hard to even find "Spin" magazine. I know all the band's now and love many songs of all of them.

@死者内部の Lol... so easily upset. Do you like this quote from Kurt? "If someone tried to take away my gay rights it would have been really bad, because I really like to buttfuck. It's fun. It feels good." -Kurt at No On 9 Benefit Concert for Gay Rights, where Nirvana donated 50% of their profits to help stop homophobia. Or maybe you'll enjoy this one? "Chris? I love you." -Kurt at same benefit gig, just prior to making out with Krist.

@ren Yes, that's from No On 9! The audio there is wrong, though, that's the spot where Kurt says "I love you" to Krist. That footage is also included in Nirvana's official video, Live! Tonight! Sold Out!! I'm probably gonna write that prom fic soon. I'll put it on Ao3 if I do.

Nirvana's appearance on MTV's "Headbangers Ball" was a significant moment in their rise to fame. The real-time information I have access to confirms that Nirvana was interviewed on "Headbangers Ball" in October 1991. This was just a month after the release of their album "Nevermind," which was on September 24, 1991

elninjalaranja Kurt wasn't that tall at all lol. Krist, on the other hand, is freakishly tall. Kurt dyed his hair brown at one point (like in that interview where he mentioned Madonna) but he was a natural blonde, even here it looks dirty blond. Go look at all his photos as a child and as a teen, it's blond.
