This is the recently launched Marshall DSL1CR Guitar Amplifier Combo, which is a part of the new DSL line of amps from Marshall that was released in 2018. The DSL1C is a 1-watt amplifier that can also be operated in even lower power mode due to the power attenuation option present on the back. The DSL1C combo has two channels, reverb, and more. This is my genuine review of the amp, and I have not edited the audio in any way.

IMO this combo is the best choice for beginners. After I played on the DSL1, I broke my VOX Pathfinder 10 against the wall and threw him out of the window. Sound of smashing crappy combo is only one thing which P10 could play for real. Yes i was a little bit drunk))) Talking seriosly, Marshall DSL1C is only one guitar amp which has a necessary adjustments, small sizes, lovely sound, comfortable volume for plaing in the small room and affordable price. P.S. I'm tried Vox AC4C1, Vox NightTrain, AV15, VT20, Marshall Code, Yamaha THR, Roland Cube, Boss Katana, etc...

Shane, great video. I recently gave up on my Marshall DSL40C. Even after upgrading the speaker to a V30 the amp was limited to classic rock tones. The clean was very decent but the volume jump between clean and gain becomes annoying. When switching between pentode to triode (40 to 20W) there is a slight tone sacrifice. Currently I have been using a Blackstar Club 40 MKII and I am very pleased with the full range of tone and style cover by this amp. Growing on the eighties, a Marshall is an icon that as an adult I had to have, sadly I have grown out of that desire. Not saying Marshall is bad just saying that the low wattage line of amps is not as great as the big brothers. Unlike Fender which most of the low wattage amps still retain that great Fender tone. Like many of us, I just can afford a JCM800 and 1969 cab or play it at the volume at which these beast shines.

I am very fond of mine as well, a great little amp, the 0.1 watt setting is handy for playing at home when others don't want to hear you, but it doesn't sound as good at the 1 watt setting. Probably doesn't push the speaker as hard. 1 watt is actually quite loud.

I think it's the mood of the guitar player that counts the most. Years ago when the 1960's produced rock stars I pretty much think their mood was altered by drugs, especially the famous LSD and of course pot. I know, I was there! Putting that aside I want to tell you that I have played through childrens $59 P.A. sing along little amplifiers with my guitars late at night when all is quiet and I do not need a whole lot of amplification. The results were the guitars sounded just fine. Sure I did not try for the "brown" sound. Rather I wanted a "clean" tone. I was very surprised. These days I always keep a Vox Pathfinder 10 watt SS amp with a 6" speaker in my bedroom. I can turn it on and plug in my guitars and get different, maybe not better tones than the child's P.A. Toy for sure. That's because it has a hi-gain channel, Treble and bass controls and a nice clean channel as well as the 10 watts and a 6" speaker. All superior to that $59 childs sing along toy. I think maybe this new Marshall DSL1H would be even better for my bedroom. I would probably move it into my living room which is now officially my studio so I could play it during the day. What I really like is because I know it only uses preamp tubes, I can leave it on all day long, every day and never worry about replacing the tubes. I would not feel the same with my high power tube amplifiers that use EL34's and 6L6 and even my EL84's and 6V6 amplifiers. So that's what has me looking and looking into the new Marshall DSL1H. It's a tube amp that can be treated like a Solid State amp. It has 2 12AX7, one for the clean and one for the Gain channels. It uses another preamp tube a 12AU7 that has low gain but is often used in low power amplifiers. That's the entire tube complement for the DSL1H. Possible $30 to $35 bucks every 5 to 10 years for tubes. Today I have been playing through 2 Marshall SS/Digital amplifiers-my MG50CFX and tmy Code 50. I have 2 12" speakers, 100 watts, tremolo, reverb, delay and stereo all on as I play. I am using my Behringer Tube Ultragain MIC100 tube preamp in line before the amplifiers. I am not worried about putting my guitar down and taking a break and returning to the internet, or to eat, or to go outside and feed the birds. I would not do this all day, every day with my Hi-Power tube amps. But I could and I would do it with the new Marshall DSL1H. I do not need really loud volume when I record and play for myself. I need tone. Without the tone to match my mood my playing gets stale and suffers. I am not always in the mood for Marshall Cranked Tones. I also like playing "clean" and the Blues and Jazz, besides Rock/Metal.

Just picked up this lil Marshall. Overall, it’s great. However, he’s right, it doesn’t handle pedals well. BUT, I found a comment noting positive effects of a cab simulator with this Marshall. So I picked up the CabDryVR and my gosh, the sound is night and day. It can now handle any pedal I throw at it and sounds great at low volumes, which I’m assuming is the main appeal of this amp.

For a small 8'"speaker and 1 tube watt I think this sounds pretty good. Useful at home and in the studio. Heck you could mike her up for the stage and EQ to taste per venue. I have a 7 band graphic equalizer built into my mixer and I'm sure I could EQ this amp to my taste if my guitar and the amps EQ can't get me there (which I doubt). I bet if I ran this through my P.A. System (2) 1,000 watts ea.,with 15" and 1 " tweeters I could make the bass thump!

I bought an amplifier, with the hope that I would finally play on a lamp amp. The first thing I noticed is that on the clean channel, no matter how much I turn it up, the sound is always clean, without crunch. Another thing is, on the ultra gain channel, the sound is harsh, cloudy, and that's at 0.1 w. Great disappointment, and I returned it to the shop.

I'm just now getting interested in small amps, and there are a bunch to choose from! I would also say that not taking dirt pedals is NO liability for me, my thinking is that you're trying to dime a tube power section to get THAT sound without going deaf or getting arrested, so that's where I'm thinking of heading. Actually, after having the EVH5150III for 10 years, I just don't like dirt pedals anymore (even the DS1 and my GEMINI), even though amps like the Deluxe reverb kind of need something because I don't like cranking that to 10 either to get this kind of punch ... which is where these little guys are starting to interest me.... the 57 champ and this series seem to be the best bets for me. I have a bad feeling I'll be getting one of each because.... well because I can! haha. Good vid, thanks.

The gain knob only works on ultra gain channel, not classic channel, so what you say is impossible. The clean channel has just one knob, volume which gets dirty as you increase it.

Shane, it would be nice when demoing small combo amps, to run them through a 2x12 or 4x14 as well, because it bastly improves the sound, and many of us have some cab already so we would be using the amps that way. I think that is a fair way to compare them with bigger amps, and most reviewers don't bother doing that. Great review as always

Thanks for the review. FWIW, I don't care for the tones from this amp. It has the "blanket over cab" tone plus it's noisy as all get out. That tone shift just drives the amp from muddy mode to swampy muddy mode.

JohnnyG Exactly right! I purchased one from Sweetwater after playing the head version. I needed a combo,made the mistake of thinking the 8" would be @s good. Folly! I sent it back,second was worse plus noisy with everything set to ZERO. BUT,with ext cab,head sounds great.Use the fx loop and it sounds bit better. Crap amps for the price. Sweetwater tech asked me to play it over the phone,blamed the fuzz on my phone spkr. Trot line weights,best use for a Marshall DSL 1 CR

Shane, with the new DSL line, they say it has power scaling. That means that they control the volume by lowering or raising the high voltage going to the tubes. From what I have seen, this only has the attenuator switch in the back. All that is doing is adding resistors in series to the speaker and adding a pull down resistor to attenuate down to .1 If this actually had power scaling, that would make it sound better at the lowest setting. Is it just the larger models with this feature?

Sounds alright for a practice amp. However it's priced in that hard category where you can get some other nice amps for the $400-500 that you could actually gig with as well (and have FX loops etc). If you need the marshall tone, it's definitely there. BTW Shane, any chance you could do some demo's on stand alone drum machines like the digitech trios, alesis etc?

Great video Shane. I was wondering how it was with pedals. No other reviews/demos have addressed that aspect. After watching your demo I realized that the Marshall demos from NAMM only demo the Origin series with pedals but not the DSL series. I love how these sound, but I’m much more interested in amps that sound good with pedals. I’ll be eagerly awaiting your demos of the Origin series once they’re available (supposedly April here in the states).

Sounds cool, club owners may still say it's too loud. Also keep in mind it's marshall watts so it may really be 2 watts. I still can't believe I used a hundred watt Half Stack years back and at times it wasn't loud enough. The one Marshall amp has me intrigued to go out and buy another Marshall is the mini Jubilee combo I'd like to see a demo of that one
@electricurinal
@electricurinal 6 жыл бұрын
All those extra watts just go into making more and tighter bass in your sound. Cool for certain types of music, but not all. Any speaker will only get so loud no matter how many watts you put to it. I can't believe I used a 100 watt head and 4x12 either. LOL. To me 15-30 watts is more than enough for anything.... except bone-crunching metal... which I don't play since I became 40+ years old. haha.

Hey Shane, Love your reviews and jams. I was wondering if you could get a hold of a RK5 Fly Rig. Yeah the red one. Anyone of them would be awesome.

I was surprised how quickly it started distorting with the LP, on the Classic channel. I can turn mine pretty high up before my strat or tele overdrives that channel. I like to keep the Ultra channel Gain at or below noon. That's enough overdrive and sustain for me, and things get a little too ragged for my taste if I turn it further up. Agreed that the Reverb is very usable. Easy to dial in a little ambience, unlike some spring reverbs that drown you in reverb as soon as you touch the knob.

I really enjoyed the overdrive tones of this amp! It seems like a great amp to get the classic Marshall crunch for the bedroom guitarist. My question for you Shane is, as you get into 40 watt and higher range in the DSL lineup, do you feel you can achieve your desired tone in a live situation? Thanks again for another high quality video!!!! Cheers!!🤘🏽🤘🏽🤙🏾🎸🤙🏾🎸

The 20W DSL would be plenty loud enough for a live setting.

Hi, Nice video, but do u think this amp is enought for mics recording in a little home studio...? I'm not in a big room, but I can pomp up the volume, and I don't want break my ears....so...

I just bought this. The classic clannel is perfect. But the ultra gain seems to be fizzy even at low gain. Why is it? If i buy and od/distortion pedal and use it through the classic gain channel, will the dirty sound be better? Thanks.

Hi Shane, sounds good! Does it have enough room to put a bigger speaker in that little thing?
@intheblues
@intheblues 6 жыл бұрын
Not really. You "might" be able to get away with a 10 but your best option is to just use the speaker out to another cabinet.

Shane: Are you planning on doing the 5 watt model? I want one of these but with the DSL5 is only about $150 bucks more and has the gain knob on the classic gain side. Plus it has a 10" speaker. Such a dilemma :-)! To make matters worse, the DSL20 is only $100 more! I also have the Bugera but in the G5 version head and would like to see how it sounds in comparison. Anyway....good job on the demo as always.

Shane, I noticed that wasn’t your main Tele with blade buckers. Yet it said Fender on the headstock. I saw your video on the b.Scotch blonde classic vibe a few days ago. It may have been an old video I can’t remember. What’s the story on the tele in this video?

Not a fan... I like lower wattage amps, but this doesn't have enough headroom for me.Too fuzzy. It sounds cheap to me. Nice playing though.

Thanks for the review! Do you think the 1 watt head with 1x12 cab would sound any better than the combo?
@intheblues
@intheblues 6 жыл бұрын
Yep it would sound better than the combo because you could hook it up to a much larger speaker than this one. :-)

I am sorry but I don't know if I got it right. .You can't increase the volume in to clean channel cause this will switch to crunch, right?

I really wanted to buy this amp. But my concern is can the classic gain be pure clean? Like rhythm clean. Is this amp versatile?

I dig the tones of these Marshalls until the Ultra Gain goes above 5. Too loose. I can't see you using Ultra ever! The Classic Gain is plenty for me!

What !? it comes with the footswitching !? I have not seen a new amp that has the footswitching device in the deal fur a very long time, every manufacture makes you spend another $30-50 on the freaking switch, but now Marshall has figured it out 😉
