The first lesson I imparted to my own kids; If it is difficult, getting angry will not make it easier. Think it through, keep your cool and work to figure out what YOU are not understanding. It's not personal to the truck, only to you. Truck don't care how mad you get. I added airbags so when not towing I can put it back to 59" . also when towing on the highway I put the truck at normal height so I don't get high beamed. Clearly this man is a good mechanic. He is spot on with the cause of the steering centering issue that I had. My right side front axle u-joint was seized to the point that when I had the axle out and after removing the half that did articulate, I could barely get the u-joint to rotate striking it with a three pound hammer on the bench. Because I had the option, I chose to cut the center of the u-joint out with a torch rather than trying to get the seized cap off in a free state as seen starting at about 19:06 in the video. Also not mentioned in the video, I recommend removing the half of the joint that is not seized first, as it makes it easier to remove the stuck side if the other half of the axle is not flopping around. My truck drives great now and I did not blow 1K on a steering box I did not need. Thank you for the video

Great video. I bought a 99 f250 a couple years ago for a backup/hunting truck. Steering wanders constantly, it’s a very unnerving feeling. I’ve had the front end inspected by two very experienced shops. One changed a tie rod end, another changed out 1 front u-joint and did an alignment. The tech showed me the u joint that was bad, he was basically prying on it with a small crowbar and noticed the slop in it. The test that you perform is the key to identifying this issue. Just because there is no slop or play in the u-joint obviously doesn’t mean it’s not bad. The steering was marginally improved after the 1 u-joint and tie rod end. However, because the other joint was still “tight” (lacking slop or play), it was not replaced. I even took it back to that shop a year later and had it re inspected and re aligned, still wandering all over the road. Going to get the other side done and see if that ends the saga!

Wow. Excellent vid. I did an extensive front end job on my 2008 F-250 a few years back. I just enjoy watching how others do this. The worst part of the job for me was removing that damn snap ring. Thing is a fat as a nickle. I had to buy a very expensive snap ring pliers and even then it wasn't easy. In my case I chose to replace the entire axle with a new universal already installed. I wasn't confident in my abilities to press out that old universal. The irony is, once I dove this deep into it, I was like: "I'm in here I mind as well change the ball joints while I have everything apart". So I ended up getting the ball joint press tool from the Advanced Auto loaner program after all. You do excellent work. Great job!

Ford pickups have been wandering the roadways ever since they left the straight axle. I had a 1981 F-350 dually.Checked everything out, everything new,including the wheels and tires which were balanced. Tried a different set of tires, same thing, wandering all over. Even got pulled over by the Mo.State Highway Patrol and given a drunk test of which I passed. The officer drove that truck and said I was ok to go. It wandered with him driving it. My uncle worked at Ford and said that they all did it. A very solid truck with lots of H.P. but loved gasoline. 220miles and 88 gallons later I arrived. It had to go. Have not bought a Ford since.

Why are all the good mechanics out of my reach, LOL!! I had those ball joints changed out on my 2000 F-350 back in 2008 and WHAT A HUGE DIFFERENCE it made!!! I can tell they're due again and now I can do it myself now. That's for sharing Nate. NEW SUBSCRIBER!!! 👍👍

how did the customer react when you cured the problem where the others couldnt
@InTheShop4 жыл бұрын
Relieved the problem was finally solved but obviously unhappy they spent a significant amount of money elsewhere needlessly.

I just did this to my 99 Ram. Had steer wander on the road and a lot of clunking when hitting bumps and it’s a lot better now. My mechanic told me the U joints were completely shot in every way.

Really well done presentation. I have a 2000 excursion, and the steering was goofy, thought it was the box, valves, who knows. Took it to my mechanic, put on the hoist, yanked the tie rods as you did, and checked the ujoint. Exactly what the problem was. It can actually cause the steering to lock on you, a real fight the odd time.

There is having knowledge and having skill, you have shared both in a plain simple language and sharing why having specific tools and the reason to have them or rent them was great. Honestly this seemed very much like a shop video for class room instruction. Great job.

I am currently battling this wander issue on my 1999 F250 4x4. Just installed the red head steering box and I still have this wander issue. I will check the axle shaft universal joints tomorrow. Thank you for such a detailed video with so many tips and advice. Very much appreciate it.

I came across this video in my KZbin feed late one nigh this week. Today I checked my joints and sure enough passenger side is seized. I've only had the truck a few years and looks like the PO changed them to non greaseable type, also seems to have a seized tie rod on the drivers side, so it looks like I've got some busted knuckles in my future. Thanks for a great video and subscribed.

Did you check your neighbors truck yet? Might find them there. What kind of beer you drinking? I've been on an IPA kick.

@@InTheShop Neighbor's truck is a Dodge. Even the best mechanic can't fix that. Ive been enjoying a free pack of Horny toad blonde. Although enjoy is not the right word.

@@InTheShop yep, the Lagunitas IPA are a real treat, all well deserved! BTW here is how to fix URIC ACID gained from beer: simply drink lemonade and cherry juice moderately. Enjoy, keep up all your wisdom 🤗

I bought my 2008 SD in January and just figure out what brake parts need to be replaced, but want to check out all the other stuff at the same time and already have discovered that the auto locking hubs up front both are shot. Sadly the shipment rates for parts to Germany recently seem to have risen due to Corona, but I want to get this thing on the road this year and I might have some fun at the inspection to have this thing registered over here, as the guidelines get stricter day by day and these Ford SD Pick Up trucks are real exotics over here.
