Love your videos. One thing I did is make square gradiated swatches of each of my paints. Then put each swatch in a plastic “business card holder sheet, the pages organized by colour type. Then I can take each one out as I like, and put them next to other colours or against the painting im working on to see how it goes. It works really well.

Can’t tell you how helpful your lesson on Mixing Chart was for me. I pulled out my old palette and cleaned it up, opening up old tubes and filling the cubes, and making a list of paints that I might be needing to replace. I thought I wouldn’t enjoy making the grid sheets but surprisingly once I found my rhythm they became enjoyable. Your tip on changing the water for each sample resonated with me and I dutifully commented to the process. Thank you for inspiring me to put forth the effort to create these wonderful and valuable painting tools.

If you want a space between your colors I have tried washi tape. Washi tape comes in every width size, colors and/or patterns. It is quick and easy and can look quite lovely. You can also remove the tape after you are finished if you like.

Because I always seem to be adding new paint colors and brands I had to switch to a different system for myself. I purchased the page protectors that you use for like baseball card collections. Each sheet will hold 9 cards. I cut my watercolor paper into the dimensions of baseball cards now when I need to swatch out colors. I include the name of the color at the very top of each card. A bit below the name of the color I write the brand. Below the brand name is where I start my paint color, starting with full strength color, and fading out as I get towards the bottom of the card. Since the paint color is so pale towards the bottom of the cards I can then write the pigment information on the left hand bottom side of the card, and the lightfastness rating on the right bottom side. This has worked out well for me because I can always insert new colors into my collection of swatches just by shifting the cards around a bit or if necessary inserting a whole new page protector into my system. Anyhow not sure if I explained that well so that you can picture it, but it has worked out okay for me. I appreciate how organized you are :)

I’ve been watching videos all day obsessing about which style, layout, cards, charts and what to include…I’ve had the paper, rulers, knife, stencils on the table and overwhelming myself. Thank you so very much for giving me permission to just get the paints on paper so I can learn about them ❤ you suggested that I not worry about all the things like opacity and lightfast and pigment numbers. For now I’m going to make small charts that will go with each of the tin pallets then make the chart like you did that I can fit in page protection in a binder to see the values I can achieve. Thank you 😊

Another KZbinr I watch is always talking about pigment colors, and I don't know what I'm doing with pigment colors, but I figured as I got paints that actually show pigment numbers, I would use them on my charts. Lo and behold, I bought a set of 12 (Chinese) Winsor Newton professional watercolors. This was the first time I was ever using decent watercolors even though I got them cheap, and realized there were a couple of colors that I wanted to add, burnt sienna, dioxazine purple (which is my favorite and acrylics as well), Payne's gray, and cerulean blue. However, money being tight, I just got them in the Cotman line. As I was swatching them, I noticed that the same blue pigment made up both the cerulean blue and the Payne's grey. I wouldn't have noticed that before. I decided to buy the 36 colors set now and later as I have to replace them, I can spend more on the individual tubes. Of course it takes a long time to get the orders from China, I'm in the US, and I decided to start planning out my palette (magnetic eyeshadow palette, separate mixing palette), I chose to put the blacks and grey's across the top and my blue coming straight down so that I could have the cerulean blue and the Payne's grey together. I would have never thought to do that otherwise without having the pigment numbers. For the record, not everybody is artistic, I'd take that over math skills any day. Your nails are beautiful, and I do hope that was your last cancer treatment, and all is well now. {{{hugs}}} PS. Thank you for introducing me to Davy's grey as well.

To confirm, “standard letter size” is the general term, though younger kids will call it by dimension, “EightAndAHalfByEleven” almost all one word. “Legal size” is 8.5 x 14 inches but almost never used anymore, even by lawyers. (Once court documents went to PDF electronic file format, legal size pretty much went dead because printers were happier with standard letter size.) Adding some old school detail since you seemed curious about those details. I hope you’re feeling healthier now, and thanks for all the great videos; I was taught pen-and-ink photorealism decades ago as a kid, and recently took up watercolor after my hands gave out and I couldn’t knit any longer. I need all the help I can get, and you’re exactly at my skill level. Have a nice weekend. 💖

I have lots of color charts; if I get painters block, I do color charts - very relaxing! My pigment swatches are painted on a single "trading card" sizes of good watercolor paper and stored in plastic trading card sleeves. I store the swatches by pigment and can easily move or reorder them. Good video.

I have a set of 12 Royal Talens tubes & a set of 6 tubes of Daler~Rowney paints also. Not enough to have to have a notebook for them. I haven’t done this although most artists recommends it. I always have the tendency to jump in to the real thing. It’s needed in order to understand your color, not to mention, every brand is different. You convinced me. My question is ... does it matter what type of paper you use-hot or cold press? It has a diff effect. How about XL canson paper which is cellulose! Thx.
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber 4 жыл бұрын
I use cold press, it's much easier to handle. I only use hot press if I am doing some kind of mixed media, like watercolour with charcoal, and I need a smoother surface for the other media. I tried Canson recently but didn't get on with it.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Very helpful and good timing. I have about 34 new water colors to swatch and set up in a palette. I started swatching, but each new paint tube oozes out so much paint that I stopped. Am not sure how to keep from wasting that treasured paint. Love the way you swatched your colors. Thinking my swatches will help me to decide how to lay out the color palette. That presents a whole other dilemma & set of decisions. Off to see if you have a palette lay out video that will help me with those decisions.

I think I do! It's often if the paints have travelled or sat for a long time, it's just pressure. As long as you have a deep well or pot to hand you can still use the paint. :-) I tend to group primaries, earths, secondaries together on the palette. If you need to choose a yellow for example it helps to see it with all your others.

You can also use pkg tape which is thicker than our regular scotch tape..its comes in about 4 inchs wide sizes so it can be cut in half or whatever your size is in to put in your travel palette for the wc chart this can adhere to watercolor paper so if you put in travel palette it won't get all mucky..

Also bad at math, but in the USA it would be letter size page protectors. Letter size at 8 1/2 by 11" is close to A4 size, so a 1/8 piece of a 22 X 30" sheet of watercolor paper would fit in these as well. I sometimes use Arches 9 x 12 pads and cut the sheets down a bit to fit. Thanks for all your helpful videos!

What would the world be without perfectionists. :-) quite boring actualy. Thank you for this video. I was wondering how to go about this. I think it is easier for me to combine both your methods.. Made looong rectangles instead. Wasnt trusting myself with the water pigment ratio in smalller areas. The plastic sleaves are a great idea. Cant wait to see vidoes with colour mixing charts especialy greens. :-)

Once you have squeezed out the paint from the tube into the pallet how do you label them so you know what you have? How you do label pans of paint?

Hi Connie, I don't label my palettes, because I have them in a certain order and I remember which they are, I also keep a list on my computer in the same order so I can figure it out if I forget. But a permanent marker and initials underneath will do the trick.

Great idea! As a beginner, I’m excited to give this a try. To answer your question, in the US we use inches to measure paper. So standard printer paper (“letter paper”) is 8.5” by 11.” Art paper usually comes in: 5.5”x 8.5”, 7”x 9”, 8”x 10”, 9”x12”, 11”x14”, 18”x24”, etc., as well as square sizes. I do prefer the A and B proportions aesthetically, though. Question 1: I’ve seen several St. Petersburg White Nights samples in your videos. I love the fine consistency and strong color, and am considering buying a set from Jacksons. What is your opinion of these paints? Question 2: I’ve looked for you paint sets and brush sets on Jacksons and can’t find them. I’m not a very good “finder” so I’m wondering if I can buy them there or need to go somewhere else. Thank you!! Edit #2: OK, JackMAN’s, not JackSON’s. I found your paint sets. 😂

Yes, all on watercolor paper. It's always best to use the paper you paint on, but if that's too expensive then choose a cheaper paper with a similar amount of whiteness.

@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Oooh! It just made me think - I made my own stencil of a palm leaf - I bought thin plastic file folders at a dollar store and cut out shapes that I needed. Doing this for stencils would probably work, and you can make see-through ones and it would be washable!! I am so going to try that.

Great video, I will give this a try. It was very useful to see them in different boxes I have done them like your other example with one box. I would like to know about the same pigment number on the two colors since I just came across the same issue with some Paul Rubens paint that I just bought, did you get an answer?
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry Carmen, it's a long while since I made this video I can't remember what I said. If I was wondering about the same pigment number appearing different across brands there are multiple reasons for this. Quality of pigment, type of binder, and colour does vary strongly even within single pigment numbers. Also because pigments are ground, and colour is light reflecting off of a surface, how fine or course the pigment is ground will affect the final colour seen.

What is SAA?
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber 4 жыл бұрын
It's a British company, sort of an online art society. You buy membership, get a magazine and discounts of art materials, both their own and other peoples. I used to be a promoter for them but am not currently. Originally SAA stood for Society for All Artists. But then the government changed the rules and they no longer qualify to be called a society (as you have to be non-profit), but they kept the initials.
