I did a face-to-face drawing course and one of the things you mention here was suggested - using shapes to situate elements on your picture. We were looking at a still-life drawing, but your suggestion here for flowers is the same. I have found this idea very valuable when I'm trying to accurately draw the positioning, shape of elements. This was a very useful video Michele. All the tips were useful and not the same ol', same ol' tips people generally provide about drawing.

I make my own embossing tools, they wear down rather quickly,as they are made from bone, and,at times,Hippo ivory. This is part of the overall aesthetic experience, the tools are part of that experience. To handle them, see them being used,to feel the tool in the hand,it thrills the mind.

Very clear descriptions of helpful tips. I've drawn since childhood and even tapped into drawing books and videos to improve my skills. Still, I didn't know many of the tips. The most helpful one for me is drawing thru other objects -- something I need to do all the time in my Nature Journaling. Just this week I did it, as usual, the "wrong way". Now I know why it just doesn't look right to the eye. Will start using this IMMEDIATELY! AND I've already LIKED and SUBSCRIBED. Thank you from North Carolina.

drawing through was especially helpful. It has improved what I attempt to draw. I've had good success with the sunflower piece and am really enjoying my new vision tricks for drawing flower shapes. I've had more success with landscapes, sky/ground, after watching this. (not my first time watching, maybe #3!) Your part on faces is challenging me to give it a try .. eek!!! Been more into plants, but want to draw ppl too! I'm also working on using guidelines which to me are daunting! I finally got some tracing paper without beating myself up!! Love the piece on textures that will be fun!! Thank you!! I'm practicing these techniques everyday, one or another as was suggested I read, draw/paint everyday. I'm so grateful for all your videos, love them! I've recommended them in other groups I'm a member on FB and friends. Thank you!!

Hi Michele, I have used the embossing technique for about 20 years and use a dart with the tip dulled as this is much more substantial than an embossing tool and can provide finer detail. For the technique to work the best for fur or hair the pattern needs to be tangled and densely packed otherwise if the texture is too loose the effect does not work as well. If you have trouble seeing the grooves then you can use a small light on an angle as this will cast a light into them. I find a blunt pencil works best over the top working as if you were drawing the fur or hair in as this is much more effective than just shading over the top. To create shadows a blending stump can be used to brush tone down into the grooves in some areas with a kneadable eraser with a point rolled on the end of it used to create highlights. I have found the papers that work the best for this are St Cuthbert's Saunders Waterford 300g Hot Press as well as Arches Aquarelle 300 or 356g Hot Press as they are both relatively tough papers and accept the embossing well. This is a great technique and it can also be used to create lots of other effects. Hope this is also of use.
