Getting a proper perspective on objects is a continual struggle for me, your advice on depth etc is extremely helpful. Like the last commenter, I am 64 too, and I began trying my hand at watercolour during the first lockdown when my granddaughter said: “Come and do some art with me, Nanny.” The moment I held that paintbrush in my hand I was hooked. I’m not good, but I love it. My old office is now my craft room (though one of my daughters calls it my ‘crap’ room because she thinks that’s what I make 😂). I don’t care. I discovered your channel only a couple of weeks ago but I’ve already subscribed and watched several of your videos. You’re easy to listen to, very instructive and honest about your own shortcomings. Extraordinary! I learned so much in this 30 minute video. You answered about a million questions I’ve had forever about drawing. I had a drawing instructor decades ago that made us all erase and start over, over and over, but she never explained what we were doing wrong and why we had to start over. I gave up on drawing for many years because that’s the impression I was left with about it, erase and start over ‘til you get it right, never having the HOW answered. Big heavy sigh. Thank you for sharing, Michelle! I’m close to tears of relief right now. I’ll be watching this many times. My biggest issue at the moment is drawing or painting from the shoulder. I don’t think I’ve quite got that yet because I have aches and pains I probably shouldn’t have, but I’m old too, lol. I’ll keep working on it. Blessings to you from Indian Rocks Beach in sunny Florida!

@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber So true! In hindsight, I’d have been better off dropping the class and finding a REAL drawing instructor. I watched all of your short videos too, and also learned a lot. Would you consider doing a short that demonstrates the mechanics of drawing from the shoulder. For some reason my head doesn’t get it. Either my elbow is moving too much, or my hand is moving too much. Maybe I need to clamp my arm to my side until I get a hold of this, lol. You know, I had the same trouble back in the ‘70s when learning to cut hair, I always had my arms up too high until one of my instructors pointed to the lift at the bottom of the chair and said in a commanding voice “LOWER YOUR CHAIR,” lol. I finally got it after that. Thanks for all you do and especially for your straight up approach. So many out here on YT teach a concept, and then blast the thing away with wishy washy commentary that only confuses me (and likely everyone else). Your a star Michele! Oh, and I’ve done tai chi, but currently doing Happy Yoga with Sarah Starr here on YT. Blessings to you!

@@rmuller366 I will try and do a demo. Allow your arm to move freely at the shoulder, not only forward and back but also to the side, as if you were making a chicken wing motion, so you get a full circular motion. Your elbow can move a little. 🙂

It's funny how I've been an artist since my first 'wall installation' at age 2, much to my mom's chagrin... and I still learned or re-learned an easier way how to do a couple basics! Thank you Michele. :) I'm lucky because Mom did right by me and she encouraged my art and writing . At 15 she let me take over the basement, and it became my first studio. THAT was sheer luck and her generosity. So moms and dads out there - teach your kid how to clean up when their art ends up on the wrong canvas, and give them a better canvas - be it a simple pad of paper , or a spare room with table and chair and a way for them to earn money to fill it with the gear for the form of art that grabs them. The lovely madness began there in that studio and the 48 years since my first art gallery show have been made better by creating many types / forms of art. It never hurts to try something new! The best part of my art journey was the years I volunteered as an art assistant at my local VA (vet's hospital).

Thank you for sharing this very useful information that beginners can actually use rather than quick sketches that really explain nothing about what to look for in the subject. I knew about 8 of the mistakes, but I taught some drawing in High School. I saw students making these mistakes constantly. Personally, I would like to learn about how to draw forest scenes that capture the essence of particular trees ( how the limbs are shaped in different types of trees) and how to suggest the light and shadow without drawing every leaf. Complicated I know but I thought I would put this out there. Drawings can be so much more magical than photos and this is what I would like to capture.....

Your attitude to improving the standard of beginner art is highly commendable. No one has a defined list of do's and don''t put your pencil in that. So tutorials from a person kind enough to share their years of making every single mistake that has been made by all the greatest artists in history is fantastic. So many of the comments confirm that they have also made these mistakes, even though your videos don't stop people making these mistakes, they know why it happened wich is priceless info Keep pointing out every ones mistakes because the only true way to get better at anything is to make mistakes. But now they can understand why it happened and know its not due to a lack of talent.

Now don't be complaining because you got your very own video :-) :-)
I’ve been drawing for about two years and have, and continue, to make most of these mistakes. But #1 was the very best tip! Recently, I was thinking about how to draw buildings or an urban scene and thought, why don’t I place little marks to guide where I’ll put the building. It just made sense to me to do so, but I’d never seen anyone teach that. However, it never occurred to me to use them for something a lot less linear. Thanks for all these tips and I know I’ll be revisiting this video.

This was great! I draw a barn that i went to as a kid and always draw the roof. It never occurred to me not to. Also very refreshing to hear that everyone makes mistakes. I had thought that i ‘had to’ get it right/accurate right away. Just recognizing recently that that i have put a lot of pressure on myself. I have had so many misconceptions about drawing. As a kid/12 years old (mid 1970’s)someone who taught art at a private school that i didn’t attend saw me drawing and commented this kid can’t draw, how can she paint’. I had been painting in oil for about a year at that time. I stopped painting right away and have struggled with drawing and painting. My inner voice repeatedly said you can’t draw. I allowed that negative thought to define me. It is time to change that. I can draw and i will draw.

Hello i am from Armenia. I'm so happy and I'm so motivated and I really love the fact that you always say that it's not our fault it's not our fault it's just the way it is it makes us understand that just because someone draws better than us doesn't mean that we are not The talented or we can reach there I really enjoy your content thank you.

I , unwittingly, make the error of NOT drawing a repeating motif in perspective. I am so very appreciative of your time and knowledge. You just saved me a an unquantifiable amount of frustration. I. can't thank you enough for sharing your experience with us. Personally, I am forever in your debt. Between you and Alphonso Dunn, I WILL learn to draw well and in the proper manner.

Hi Michelle, I picked up the pencil after many years. The saying goes, if one fails to plan, you plan to fail. I decided to refresh my skills first and was fortunate to come across your video. I shall defenately make and effort to follow your guidance and advise. It is well structured and put together. Thank you, Thinus

The idea of drawing eyes following the curve of the skull, is genius and common sense. Your videos, as usual, are packed with excellent advice. Thanks Michele.

thank you Michele. Now in my early sixties, I decided to start drawing. not artistically talented, nor having picked up a paint brush or pencil since high school, I decided it's about time I learn something new. I love colors, the beauty of nature, architechture, paintings and fotography. I would very much enjoy being able to draw beautiful things I see, but have no knowledge about techniques. So, I thought to find myself a tutor and stumbled upon your channel. While waiting for my order of sketching paper and pencils to arrive, I decided to get a head start and just absorb some information about a variety of basic skills and pitfalls to avoid. this is my first video I listened too and you got me hooked. Thank you so much for these wonderful tips. I bookmarked your channel. greetings from Los Angeles.

Oh wow, I am so glad I found you! I do most of the ten you mentioned. I’ve successfully completed four very difficult sketches. However, they were from a step by step book. In other words, someone else figured out all of the details for me. I am stuck with a sketch of a side profile of a front standing ballerina (also a step by step) but I’m so frustrated with her face, especially the lips and nose! Everything else worked out great. After all, how hard can ballerina shoes, a hair bun, and tutu, be! I will be watching all of your videos and practicing as I go. I will watch this video every time I practice a new sketch or drawing until the do and don’ts details are embedded in my thinking. You’re a blessing.

Very clear tutorial. Thank you so much. The first mistake has given me loads of grief and I have a hard time remembering it. I find I get all fired up ready to draw and stopping to place my subject is not what I want to do. But of course it’s essential. Great tutorial
