Just painted the leaf 😊. I think the subject of the tutorial is perfect for a challenge and I liked all the tips and usage of pencils (I have both types, and they are usually just lying around somewhere since I switched to watercolours)

I do appreciate your stance on drawing and agree it is a skill worth working on; however, sometimes I am far more interested in a new technique (colour pencil lines) than the subject matter. Really helpful tutorial - thank you! I especially liked the idea of using the coloured pencil for the fine veins. I am thinking about having a go … I have a question, though. My natural inclination is to want to lightly block in areas of shadow before starting to add the main colours. I’ve not noticed other watercolourists doing this, so it is making me wonder whether it is a really bad idea. Ideally, I would like to end up doing botanical illustration-type watercolour, so your leaf is a perfect subject for me. Would adding in the small shadows in a neutral colour first work???

I'm not saying can never work for certain painting styles, but watercolor traditionally goes light to dark for a reason. It's quite hard to judge how dark your darks need to be at the start. You can end up adding the same shadow multiple times to get it dark enough, then ending up with scruffy edges where they all overlap. Putting in darks first works better with oils.

Michele, I'm wondering if the use of Derwent Intense pencil is ok for the veins instead of a colour pencil? I have those and am wondering if it could be all right?

The issue is you need the pencil to not dissolve, and inktense dissolves well, that's not to say you couldn't use it in a different way, on top or by drawing into damp paint, but I wouldn't put it on first.
