kenny's not talking about a Royer, he's talking about a vintage Electrovoice. Wonderful natural sounding dynamic mics and still affordable, tho not as much as they were a few years ago. Any 70s/80s era EV stuff is great, you don't have to have the 'Elvis one.'

Have you never heard the podcast? He’s exactly what you would want from a show like this about the nerdy details of production and recording: he’s genuinely interested and curious about what the artist is doing, and knows just enough technical knowledge to get them to elaborate on what we all want to know about how specific songs are made. And then he gets out of the way and lets the artist talk. You couldn’t be more wrong in your assessment.
