Intimate Apparel is a gorgeous play but I disagree with the interpretations given in this video. Perhaps it's the director's take in what he wants to see. For example, the man that Esther marries...this actor kind of sanitizes him IMO. The play I saw has this man writing beautiful letters but once Esther meets him, he is the opposite of his letters. He is not tender and gentle. It's almost as if he uses Esther to get to the USA and then finds she is industrious and has saved a bit of money, which Esther winds up giving him (although she has no illusions at that point about him). Esther tries to make the best of a bad situation. They also miss the relationship with Mr. Marks which, for me, was one of the most stunning things about the play. In the end, Esther indeed comes into her own by not only learning to love herself but recognizing the man she truly loves. Just my opinion. But it really is a wonderful play.

I'm doing a reading of this show (Mrs. Dickson). I write historical plays, and I'm both embarrassed and flabbergasted that I haven't found and read this play sooner! The video snippets I've seen of this piece down play the gravity of piece. I'm hoping my director doesn't do this. It's a one time read, so I won't be there during many of the rehearsals. But I soooo hope the play becomes about devastated interaction and incredible growth without realizing...

I agree. My read of this play does not have George and Esther seeking to experience love together. I found him to be manipulative -- a user. Motives were different, in other words. Devastated interaction is much more accurate to me.
