Funny story...I am an INTJ and my wife is an INFJ. My wife recently took a picture of me relaxing at home. Later when she was scrolling through some old pics, she found a picture of me from 5 years ago wearing the exact same clothes ( not the same style, the exact same clothes)!!! I dress for work to look presentable, but when I get home I dress for comfort. Style and fashion doesn’t matter.

lmao nearly the same situation happened to me. My friends and I were going through some old photos and we found one from 2017 and I was literally wearing the exact same outfit that I was wearing in the photo. Literally the only thing that was different was that I was wearing mismatched socks in 2017 and I was wearing black socks when we revisited the photo.

INTJ - I definitely put thought into my appearance but more for presenting a feeling (eg studious, carefree or classy) rather than wanting people to think I "look good". It is more to honor my own vision. I understand that there will always be people who don't like the way I look and that doesn't bother me but if I am not comfortable with the way I look that is a problem to be solved.

@@TheThomasmbajjwe Thanks for the compliment! I wrote three books as a child (even did the illustrations for two of them) as part of the Young Writer's Society. Professional writers visited the school, we read our books to them, and they gave us feedback. My feedback was overwhelmingly positive and I was encouraged to continue. However, I was involved in so many different activities that I chose to let writing take a back seat. Sadly the books were all lost in a fire that happened when I was 15, so unfortunately I cannot share them with anyone. Perhaps I will write more in the future. It was fun for me. 🙂

Very well put. An example from my life is when I was still in elementary school, I was going to give a presentation on a Poem about Wind, and before presenting, I had a strong urge to douse my hair with gel and shape it in such a way that it gave the appearance of being in a hurricane. Before the presentation, however, I became obsessive and felt that my peers would not understand the meaning my hair was trying to portray, so ultimately, I had to wash it out. - INFJ.

INTJ here, this is very accurate. I have a personal style that has nothing to do with fashion trens, it's just what's right for me. Mostly formal with a teeny tiny quirky/goth/bold touch, but above all comfortable and practical. Zero makeup, very few but bold jevellery. I love to look formal and business like in both clothes types and colours, especially since I'm in an artistic field and want to show that I'm not an airy, head in the clouds type of person and I take no bullshit and respect myself. Also I'm heavily tattooed and the contrast doesn't let people label me too easily. I have pretty well developed Se and do enjoy to look good for looking good's sake, but also because if you look good in a visual arts environment it says something about your tastes. I started paying attention to this in my early twenties because I really tried for a while to dress girly and "like everyone else" to fit in and then noticed there was a huge gap between how people perceive me and how I really am that caused a lot of complications when they got to know me better. No, I won't dress differently to look more approachable, because I could wear nothing but pink florals and people would still find me intimidating when I open my mouth. Sure it's what's inside that matters, but the world is superficial and it won't go away if we pretend it's not. To me looks are all about achieving a "what you see is what you get" effect to communicate what I'm like from the get go and not waste time with misunderstandings from portraying a misleading image. Bonus points of the INTJ uniform: everything matches well with everything and it takes very little time to assemble an outfit. Efficiency ftw! 🤘

So true-INFJ here. Some of my coworkers seeing me in street clothes (I work in a hospital so seeing a coworker out of scrubs is like seeing a cat in a Halloween costume) ask me who my stylist is. Lol. What I find hilarious is all my clothes are either discounted or vintage from “Sally Ann” stores. I have clothes that are 30 years old I still wear. I also love to throw on a strategically placed. piece of vintage costume jewelry. It’s all about presenting an elegant classic yet original look that says I am beautiful, different, creative, and that I care. Intentions are everything. So I always dress to impress and I never wear yoga pants in public-unless it’s 4 am at the 24 hour grocery-maybe once a year.

But I am constantly pruning my wardrobe to include only those pieces which for me, resonate most with my aesthetic.

It’s kind of funny, I’m an INFP and can relate to all the aesthetic motivations you spoke of. It’s not always important though, some days I don’t put much thought into my appearance at all. I’m not very consistent in the reason for style choice, but I do follow a pattern of cycling through those reasons. Regardless, it’s rarely a cause of major stress and so usually enjoyable for whichever reason I happen to have from one day to the next.

infj here- my natural look, looks very soft and innocent. if I were to wear blouses and flowery clothing, I very much so look like I belong in a church. and I am not fond of that. I dont want to give that message off in a social setting. I wish I was more edgy looking. I often wear dark clothes. and have gotten my septum pierced. it's not necessarily that i want to be some edge lord lol, it's that being an infj means most my life has been filled with others coming to me and relying on me and using me as their therapist. it means people see me as some guide in their lives. and it can be tiresome to live this way for them. so I have to build a wardrobe that might make me a little less approachable, as to help me put up some self protection walls. a filter. I mean, plenty of people still come to me. and I'm okay with that truly. I've accepted my infj fate. but if I can lessen the dose of people, I shall. my clothes have meaning to me and have a message I want to send to others. thank you for making this video and explaining things so articulately. very well done. ☆

But most of the time yes, I care WAY more about how I want to look than how others like me to look and often it even sets me in some mood, for example when me and my INTP friend went to take photos of old cemetery we just had to put on something goth because it made the whole experience more interesting. I'm INTP and the way INTJ's relationship with aesthetics is explained in this video spoke a lot to me [especially the meaning behind the aesthetics part], to a certain extent. I love art and fashion to an extreme, but I think the difference is that the ''execution'' of let's say, a personal dress code, is lower in my priorities list than in an INTJ's list of priorities, for example. Many times I can't be bothered with the effort even though I love the idea [but when I do I get extreme pleasure from it]. And if anyone says I have to look a certain way because ''that's the way it is'' it almost sets a violent rebellious reaction on me and makes me want to do the exact opposite. I certainly can go out in public badly dressed if I don't have a clear motive for putting in the effort [this can be dangerous and it gets worse when I'm depressed] and many times I don't really care a lot about most people's opinions of how I look [except if they are people who interest me in some way], but sometimes I feel the stereotype of INTPs not having or caring about aesthetics and dress codes at all is a bit exaggerated. Not all INTPs are gross people wearing a t-shirt with ketchup stains, we are able to love beauty too :D

Depends on what kind of restaurant it is, because I also to look the part but I also like being myself. If I don't need to dress in a particular way cause there's no risk of a social net loss or loss of any other kind, sweat pants just might be an option (but I don't ever wear sweatpants so maybe some other casual clothing). I just wanted to point out that it's very common for INFPs to mistype as INFJ. I want to be clear that I'm not implying you are mistyped; I can't tell that from one comment. But your comment does speak to being in touch with a sense of strong Fi, staying true to what resonates with your feelings, values, preferences and identity. Of course INFJs have demonstrative Fi, so it can be a tricky distinction, but to anyone reading this comment, if you make such decisions in a similar way, by referring to your Fi, and can also relate to Ne/Si, I would seriously consider INFP as a possibility.

@@heatherbryant4197 He was mostly talking about INTJs though (himself) so not sure why you're comparing my possible mistyping mainly with INFJs. I think you mean I'm mistyped as INTJ? Doesn't seem likely though. And it might be a little tricky but you can probably on some level say intuition is feeling based. "Gut feeling" as it's sometimes called. This is why a lot of people say intjs are more "reason" based people than straight up "logic" based. So that's why I doubt I'm INTP or any other type. And just in case there's a misunderstanding, I don't mean I wish to express what I feel through my clothing. I mean wear what I wear based on what I feel/think about the event/occasion etc.

What you said about appearance is in my case so accurate it almost scares me! No one has EVER described this so well. I am an INTJ-T and your explanation ist 100% accurate and exactly how I feel! Now I’m at home in my pyjamas and couldn’t care less but yesterday I went to town and everyone looked at me, because I was very well dressed! I receive compliments on my clothing and appearance almost every day and many times (and especially) female co-workers are extremely jealous…which is not so good. Add the fact that I live in Switzerland and people here dress so badly, that is not difficult to stand out in the crowd. The most people here dress to work as if they’re still heading to the mountains with their backpacks…actually…they bring theirs backpacks to work instead of bringing a stylish bag or a beautiful leather computer-bag….for my senses, this is horrible… In Italy, near country, is very different…maybe Italy is full of INTJ’s hahahaha !Nonetheless I will not change the way I dress and accessorise so they can feel less bothered! I think you explain this very well. As a mostly INTJ (I'm autistic, so I don't fit the type exactly, but do have a lot in common with it when I'm in a comfortable or confident frame of mind), the clothes I own - for that matter almost everything I choose to own, not just clothes - were chosen because of what they mean to me personally. Every t-shirt that has a design on it has one that refers to something that is a favorite of mine or that reminds me of something I've done or a place I've been that I really liked. For example, I'd buy a Batman t-shirt but pass over a Punisher shirt in a store because I've been a long-time Batman fan but have never really cared for The Punisher's comics or movies at all. I prefer Batman's methodical, investigative, thoughtful way of defeating villains over The Punisher's brutal, overwrought way. I tend to think of The Punisher as being more of a villain than a hero. Someone Batman would try to capture and rehabilitate rather than team up with if they did a crossover story. I do sometimes think about needing to convey a specific message by how I'm dressed. For example, if I'm going with my wife to a Green Bay Packers football game or watching party, I'm going to wear my Green Bay Packers t-shirt or jersey, because that's my favorite team. I wouldn't wear my Indianapolis Colts jersey unless it was the Colts playing someone other than the Packers because that would convey the wrong message. I have a Colts jersey because it is of Adam Vinatieri, one of the all-time greatest kickers. I was a kicker in high school, so he was kinda my hero for that. But, I was already a die-hard Packers fan before he came on the scene and where I grew up, once you pick a team, you stick with them. Now, I don't care about fashion or what is trendy in the general population. If it became very unfashionable to wear football jerseys, even to games, I would still wear them because I'm more concerned with what I like and what has meaning to me than with what other people think. I wouldn't wear one to a job interview, unless it was one for working at a sports bar or athletic goods store, though because that would not convey the personal meaning I want the interviewer to see. I'd wear a good looking version of whatever the people who work for the company wear on a daily basis because I'd want to convey the message that I think that I should be part of their company, so I should look as though I already am. Speaking of meanings, I'm curious about what the meaning of Chris' shirt in this video is. It looks like we have the grim reaper about to claim a soul from this red-headed lady. It is an interesting shirt, but I wonder why he picked this shirt for this video. I rarely put myself in front of the camera when I make videos because looking into a camera is almost as unsettling for me as looking into someone's eyes face to face. On the rare occasions when I do, I usually choose clothes that don't have an designs on them because I don't want the viewer to get distracted by looking at the design.

Great content, man. Absolutely correct. I place a *huge* value on Se/aesthetics, both in a selfish/personal/experiential way, and in an extroverted way. This is very true. As an INTJ, I see exercise, beyond the health reasons, grooming and dressing a particular way as a tool to exert control over others perceptions of you. I've analyzed the aesthetics and meaning behind clothing and appearance and how others form conclusions about the individual (even if most do it subconsciously). There is a minimum attire for each occasion or venue and I would be uncomfortable, in like morally wrong way, that I wasn't up to my standards. I also judge others who let's say wear sweatpants/shirts to restaurants or who under dress for job interviews. A good example is I was once grooming my facial hair to like perfection, at least to me, and a friend of mine said it doesn't really matter no one will really notice that little difference. Still I continued because it was more of a way for me to exert that control on my outward appearance and perception and also to remove as many negative points about me. There is a confidence and security in knowing that you look how you want to look and it was all intentional, you made the plan and followed through.

For work (I don't work with the public) I dress smart but with something a bit different (i.e. a hat or flowers in my hair). When I dress to go out, I really let my imagination run riot. I have a gothic tendency (films, books) so my clothes tend to have a gothic theme. But even here it has to be imaginative and not traditional. When I was young I used to make my own clothes so I could use a basic pattern and then change it. If people notice me I want it to be for my individuality.

Great video! I feel this to be very true to me as an INFJ. If I have an event planned I tend to obsess about what to wear from day one. I also struggle a lot with appearence and clothes, as I want my clothes to reflect every aspect of me, the music I listen to, the interests I have, where I live and my career which don't always work together. This is especially hard for me as I hate clutter so I tend to keep my clothing items at a minimum, so every. single. piece. I. own need to be perfect. And if I do buy an item I really like without thinking about the purchase for a month or so in advance, I end up giving it away. Hovewer, I do not really care about looking presentable in a way many other people see as presentable, I can easily run errands in dirty or ragged clothes as they in a way reflect my life living on a small homestead as well as the genres of music I like. I do not hovewer feel like I care about my appearence for the reason I just mentioned, so at first I didn't think this video would make any sense to me!

i love the way you described everything. as an INFJ, i have somewhat of a variety with the way i dress, it just depends upon who im with, why im with them, and what we are doing. i do always try to dress comfortably/relaxed so that people might understand that they can talk to me. the only example i can find that might have different logic is when i attend school. i have very little time to do everything i need/want to do as i attend school regularly, so i tend to neglect some of my personal needs like hygiene and stuff. i do find myself obsessing and becoming very self-conscious at school 24/7, though. when i make plans to go out to do something other than school- even if i am still as busy as i usually am- i do put a lot more effort into my appearance, making sure im showered and well-dressed. to me, school is not considered a special occasion like going out would usually be, so i get very tired of dressing for it all the time. maybe this is all because i have a hard time putting all my effort into every little thing all the time, so i neglect what i find is the least important/most exhausting. going to school 5 days a week and trying to look presentable for every single day i leave the house can take a lot of time overall, especially since my hair is so high-maintenance. also, i feel attending school is extremely important- my brain is wired to understand that going to school is my only option- so i technically feel as though school is not a choice, and im not the one who makes the plans of going to school every day.

This is really spot on, thanks for your material - helped me understanding my approach to aesthetics! In my case it doesn't only apply to clothing, but personal image in general - e.g. for months I've been trying to find a perfume that would fit the message I want to create in a professional setting, i.e. of being competent, serious, confident, maybe also a little cold and distant. So far it was quite unsuccessful as most of female fragrances on the market try to be overly seductive or emphasise femininity by using typical floral/fruity combinations more suitable for a teenager than an adult person (INTJ woman in this case) Anyway, great content! :)

Interesting. ISFP here. For myself, the way I present myself is 100% linked to my identity. It’s an expression of who I am. I enjoyed your video, thanks.

Your spot on! You explained me better than I knew myself! Like you just gave me music to the notes I wrote on paper. Metaphorically speaking.
