@@ChrisWitts No it's not madness If the coal costs too much to get out the ground and we can get coal cheaper from abroad What would you do? And it's a very limited market now No coal-powered power stations Or blast furnaces And not many people use coal in their houses Because of the Clean Air Act

Importing coal rather than mining it ourselves makes our politicians feel good to be able to say we no longer mine coal nor burn it to make electricity nor to make steel.

Good question of which I am not sure of the right answer. I always assumed it was for the domestic market.
