The idea that all of this stuff is vulnerable to attack is not exactly anything new. When we trained for riot control duties, as part of being national guard in the mid 70’s, we talked about how if anyone was serious about attacking any city or town, you would start by attacking critical infrastructure: water, power, news outlets, hospitals, to create mass chaos and unrest. But no one ever did anything about how soft these targets were because no one was ever a threat, so no one ever took any of these issues seriously. And no one ever bothered to think about that eventually someone is going to want to get serious and become a threat. What if those Christmas day attacks were really just probing the perimeter to measure the responses realized? What if someone is planning something much bigger than just that small scale localized attack?

And domestic terrorist laws that are enforced, if someone attacks our infrastructure for any reason, including the idiots trying to steal from them. @diedfrombored52958 ай бұрын
@@durgan5668 It's nice of you to assume we get vacation and sick leave. I actually am an armed security officer that works for a power company, the solution would be rather easy to solve. All sites are monitored 24/7 by multiple guards that have massive tvs that will show cameras that detect movement, motion sensing lights and such so nobody can just sneak in. Instead of having a security patrol officer, they just call the Police which can take 15-20 minutes before there's a response. There are 75 substations with this company, that's not something a team of 10 or so security patrol officers couldn't cover as substations connect. The REAL problem is the fences are built so closely to the substation that someone can just throw a molotov or chains, hammers, beer bottles and cause an outage, the fences need to be far out enough that someone can't just throw something and shut the power off.

You want me to believe that two guy planned to cut off power, but didn't even consider security cameras and other measures at the shop may have back up batteries? It must go much deeper than that. Pull all google phone data to show who was in the area before this, weeks before this, months even, who returned, who seemed to be in the same place more than once with another phone owner. Note: criminals, organized crime leave their phone at home. So if you catch someone without a phone, that's also suspect. The cost to add increased barriers and other protection to the sub-stations should NOT come out of the pockets of customers. This is a federal issue that needs federal money spent across all states. Instead of spending TRILLIONS of dollars warmongering all across the globe in Iraq and Afghanistan - and now spending hundreds of billions of dollars in Ukraine - that money could have been spent on improving our vulnerable and rapidly aging infrastructure at home.
@bigk47558 ай бұрын
And where do you think that federal money comes from? Because the government does not, in itself, generate any income. Rather it all comes from our taxes. Part of the problem is that it isn't just physical security. The grid has been mostly neglected since the 1970s, and today we're seeing the pattern of demand change rather radically from what it had been for many decades. The threat landscape has also evolved. The security around substations is mostly been about keeping children drunks and crazy people from getting in and hurting themselves, not about keeping somebody who carefully studied how to destroy things from getting in and destroying things. Fortunately we have much better and much cheaper technology for detecting that somebody has gotten in. Unfortunately we also have had problems with responding to those alerts for a variety of reasons.

Trip alarms that will alert the local police station.

@@eattherich9215 It could take less than a minute in total for an attack but cops will show up in five minutes on a good day. I guess it would fast track an investigation but it won't stop an attack!

Steel walls… concrete walls… razor wire on top… ARMED SECURITY..sounds like a bunch of jobs to me🤷🏼♂️ but what do I know. Not like our communities need jobs nor should we give a flying monkey about our Grid…. Like it doenst matter. Cyclone fence camras and a Master Lock. Yay!!! You so ‘mart!!!! 🤦♂️

Being the cynical person i am it is hard to see this kind of news report as anything other than advertising "attack here" . Yes it is something the public should be made aware of but can we at least use a little discretion when trying to address security issues ?

Thoughts create reality. They plant the seed into the consciousness of the masses and, through fear, create their twisted evil intent. Turn away from fear, embrace Love, and simply ignore them.

Yes, it is better to just ignore this potential life-threatening situation. Bliss is being in the dark about such things. Wait, that didn't sound right. 🙄
@bigk47558 ай бұрын
So basically you believe that if people would just not acknowledge the potential of this threat, that it will just go away? Neither willful ignorance nor self deception will ever make the threat not a threat. But nice try tinkerbell.

Geeze. Rural folks, especially the elderly are at risk whenever power goes out. Nature does it enough for us. We don't need these folks making things worse.

Ballistic barriers are a knee-jerk reaction to a few high profile cases involving guns. The problems I see with them are limiting visibility into the substation and if you position them far enough away from the transformers to not interfere with maintenance it reduces the cover they provide. Bubba there used a chain across some wires and it got called in because someone could see him.....

Neglect of maintenance and not replacing infrastructure that is over it;s life span is the biggest cause of power outages. Administrators that purposely ignore routine maintenance so their balance sheets look better should be fined and removed from their jobs.
