Well, Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi take place in other universes, and also, in Super Mario Galaxy 1, at the end the universe is reset, this also explains (canonically in the mario universe) why Super Mario Galaxy 2 has a story very similar to the first.

DUDE. The Cheeseburger Mario at 1:00 unlocked a memory I had forgotten about for a long time until now. There used to be a youtube channel that I can't remember the name of that made lego tutorials on how to build mario sprites and I used to watch that as a kid.
