This is an epic orchestral cover of the "Into the West" soundtrack, originally composed by Howard Shore. This theme appears 3 times in the last lotr movie, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. When Sam says “Come, Mr. Frodo! I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.”. Also, when Gandalf explains Pippin what happens after death "White Shores ... A far green Country". And finally, when Frodo leaves his friends to sail into the west. Overall one of my most favorite themes of all times, it's a masterpiece!

God, this is amazing. I remember seeing this movie in theaters. I'd lost my seat to someone who let their friends in and wouldn't move, so I stood the whole movie. The feeling of elation! The sweeping conclusion! Crying like kid while clinging to an Army guy who was also crying! I love this song, and every memory it brings of the journey I had along the way of the movie releases.

Only a few seconds in and this is already fricking INCREDIBLE. "Into the West" has such a profound impact on me. It's the perfect song to end the series on, such a bittersweet yet overwhelmingly hopeful note. And the score during Gandalf's speech, wow. ❤

The beauty of Tolkien's mythology is that it is a mythology of hope. Here, at the end of his most well known story, you may find the heart of that hope! Frodo, for all of his valiant efforts and those of Sam beside him, was unable to resist the powers of temptation that Sauron wielded. By that definition, he should be denied entry into Valinor, not be rewarded for his failure! And yet, as Tolkien points out in Gandalf's words "The pity of Bilbo [and Frodo] shall rule the fate of many." It's not about succeeding at the task that is given but rather what we do to accomplish that task, both before and after the event, that truly matters the most! Were it not for Bilbo's pity and Frodo's mercy, Gollum could not have accompanied Frodo and Sam to Mount Doom and if that never happened, then Frodo would have taken the Ring for himself and the world would fall into ruin before the return of Sauron. Thus it is that Frodo's journey to Valinor is not a reward for failing at his most important task, for none could've truly accomplished the task or even make it to Mount Doom, save for a very select few! Rather his journey into the west is a reward for loving the miserable, hoping for the unimaginable, and carrying a burden so dark that it waged a war for his soul every day of his life since the night that he first picked up the Ring off of the floor of Bag End! He was never meant to succeed! He was only expected to show more mercy and kindness than most would in such a circumstance! Heaven is not for perfect immortals to sneer at failure and vice, but rather is where imperfect mortals through failure can become perfected and know truly eternal peace!

This song has always been bittersweet for me, kind of like the ending of Lord of the Rings. It definitely makes me think about the afterlife and relatives and friends who have passed as well as the sober reality of my own death and what will happen afterward. Similar to 1 Thessalonians 4:13, it gives hope but does not take any of the sadness away. When my grandma died, I kept thinking about this song over and over again. 1 Thessalonians 4:13. Tolkien was a mastermind and wrote a wonderful ending to LOTR. Although the films were not as good, with respect to some of the characters, they helped people envision the world of Middle Earth. 1
