Just bought the entire Middle Earth cinematic saga now let's all wait for Peter Jackson to direct the Silmarillion. I hope that JRR Tolkien will appreciate it if we made an anthology of his work and Nicholas Hoult narrates the show along with the other cast members of Lord of the Rings and Hobbit. Maybe make a game show to see who's a true middle Earth historian.

As much as I loved that book and could never think that any film could do it justice, and as great as The movie was, still, nothing will ever top Tolkien's vision. It's impossible. After the glorious ride through the middle ages comes to the sad, tearful end at the "Grey Havens," inexplicable to a 12 year-old, "Into the West" finally explains through song and emotion a bittersweet death.
@peterselig9210

Hello brianmallen8887, Thank you for your comment here. I heartily agree with you that no film , however well done, can do full justice to Tolkien's vision. I believe this opinion is shared by many people who love Tolkien's books. If you don't mind my my asking, I am curious what you are referring to as "a bittersweet death" in your closing sentence? Are you thinking of the severing of the close friendship and bond between Frodo and Samwise? Or, perhaps, of that between Frodo and Gandalf, and the three hobbits, Samwise, Meriadoc & Peregrin? Kind regards, Peter

@@peterselig9210 Thank you Peter. Very kind comment, and not just cause we agree on something. Reading LOTR and the Hobbit as a child was such a joyful experience. The adventure, the different creatures, the magic, no religion. ..Cut to this video of a conversation between C.S. Lewis and J.R.twice Tolkien. Jesus, it was like the literary equivelant of Isaac Newton and Einstein talking. Deeeep! The jist was Myth vs. Religion..What I got from it was this Tolkien guy wasn't a simple man telling a simple story. Although in a sense it is: Middle Ages+ A Quest= J.R.R. Tolkien. .With one crucial addition: He had spectacular, original imagination. Underneath all that is like the roots of a tree. The bare bones and structural elements of the mythic this and that underpinned that simple and spectacular story. My 12 year old self was profoundly saddened by the Grey Havens ending. Emotionally but not consciously I knew it meant death. Yeah, I know that the Elves and Gandalf and Frodo were getting on a ship sailing to some paradise off shore. But I think Tolkien was softening the blow to all of us so emotionally caught up in the story. It was illogical. They won the war against Sauron + minions. "Sweet." But their reward is to "fade" away. "Bitter." Why leave? A whole lot of myth making was going on. Having it all make some kind of sense was a tricky wicket for sure, reconciling some mythic "traveling on" against hard nosed, bare bones reality. "Fading away" as a stand-in for death. Back to the convo between Tolkien and Lewis. One said to the other, "are you sure that fairies and goblins and all the rest didn't actually exist?" The other said "religion is myth." So I ask you, what did it all mean to you?

Here are the lyrics: Lay down Your sweet and weary head The night is falling You have come to journey's end Sleep now And dream of the ones who came before They are calling From across the distant shore Why do you weep? What are these tears upon your face? Soon you will see All of your fears will pass away Safe in my arms You're only sleeping What can you see On the horizon? Why do the white gulls call? Across the sea A pale moon rises The ships have come to carry you home And all will turn To silver glass A light on the water All Souls pass Hope fades Into the world of night Through shadows falling Out of memory and time Don't say We have come now to the end White shores are calling You and I will meet again And you'll be here in my arms Just sleeping What can you see On the horizon? Why do the white gulls call? Across the sea A pale moon rises The ships have come to carry you home And all will turn To silver glass A light on the water Grey ships pass Into the West

Hi @@peterselig9210! Thank you for your kind response (which are shamefully rare on the internet). I actually did know that both Frodo and Bilbo go onto the ship in the book. My response to Diane's question was based on the assumption that she wasn't as familiar with the story, and since this video only includes scenes from the film adaptations, I felt it was adequate to give a simple answer with a simple addition of contextual information. Nonetheless, thank you also for your addition. If Diane should have anymore questions, our collective knowledge will surely be satisfactory. Sincerely, ~ Sikah

Dear Sikah (@@Cindel_and_Wicket), Thank you for your kind words. Sorry, in turn, that I maybe was a little "picky" in my reply to you. Thank you for your explanation of why you answered Diane's question as you did, taking into consideration that she might not be very familiar with the story, and thus you added some background information to help her understand it all better! Thanks for your kind words about how our collective knowlege can be sufficient for further questions Diane may have. (I just hope she does not follow up with a question like "What kind of being is Tom Bombadil? That would stretch my knowledge to breaking point!!) Kind regards, Peter Selig

When this song started playing on the credits i suddenly clicked and understood the whole meaning of the movie and the metaphor for "sailing west". there are so many layers to it depending on if you view tolkies writings literally, methaphorically or legendarily.
@ishmaelforester9825
@ishmaelforester9825 Жыл бұрын
As long as you don't confuse 'allegory' with 'applicability' as the Professor got a bee in his bonnet about and wrote in the foreward later lol. He was very annoyed that people said that Sauron was Hitler, the Ring the nuke, the Fellowship the allies etc. He actually said it disgusted him because as a fairy tale lover and teller he despised any direct allegory. 'I like history, true or feigned,' which is his very polite way of saying he knew the whole wars were based on tissues of lies, and he just wanted to charm with a universal story.
@Donnirononon
@Donnirononon Жыл бұрын
@@ishmaelforester9825 I actually said neither of these. I think you can see more in Tolkiens writings without comparing Sauron to Adolf. To me Tolkiens word was always a metaphor for death and why it is important for life. Just listen to the lyrics of the song and think about Frodos journey as well as Arda in general again. What can you see?

You know I sat there wondering why Frodo was so shocked then so ecstatic to see Gandalf at the end of the movie, having completely forgotten the last time Frodo saw Gandalf he was taking a dive off the high platform with the Balrog. Then the true hero of the movie enters, the only ring bearer to not fall to its treacherous power.
