My teenage daughter passed last month after fighting cancer since she was 11. Near the end, I couldn't hold her because it hurt her too much. I am sobbing while listening to this song. How I look forward to one day holding her in my arms again, watching her sleep peacefully. Oh, my baby! These are some of the most beautiful words in all of fantasy. I love the mental picture "the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a far green country under a swift sunrise."

What are these tears upon your face? Soon you will see All of your fears will pass away Safe in my arms You're only sleeping What can you see On the horizon? Why do the white gulls call? Across the sea A pale moon rises The ships have come to carry you home And all will turn To silver glass A light on the water All Souls pass Hope fades Into the world of night Through shadows falling Out of memory and time Don't say We have come now to the end White shores are calling You and I will meet again And you'll be here in my arms Just sleeping And all will turn To silver glass A light on the water Grey ships pass Into the West

@kyletactfultheologian10 жыл бұрын
which makes absolutely no sense. In the Hobbit, the story of the Dwarves is intended as a metaphor for Israel in the Old Testament. Thorin is meant to resemble the expected King David, or warrior king, that would free the chosen people. However, the LOTR uses sort of two examples of a Messiah. Where Froddo appears to be playing the Christ who carried the sins of humanity, Aragorn appears to be playing the role of the warrior Jesus from Revelation. I could go on, but Tolkien was clearly representing scripture through both the Hobbit and LOTR.

That was actually quite a common technique among fantasy authors around that time - the author of the Conan books had a similar approach. The idea of creating fantasy worlds that are completely separate from our own hadn't really caught on, so fantasy authors generally tied their world in with the real world in some way or another.

@harrietrichards459510 жыл бұрын
I believe this song is in the end credits of the last movie. I don't think Tolkien wrote the lyrics. Tolkien's works have some similarities with the Bible, which obviously isn't surprising seeing as he was Catholic, but there's a strong pagan influence as well (primarily Germanic), and there's also a great deal of originality in them.

My God Peter this was absolutely beautiful. .. it brought tears of pure joy and happiness to my eyes and heart that flowed deep into the depths if my darkened soul... sparking a light that was blown out when my Mother pasted yrs ago. It has given me new hope in being/seeing her again. ..for I miss her so. I can not thank you enough for the way particular song lifted me and brought me out of my dark domain.

I am sure all of you have all listened to this enough times to know the lyrics cause it is amazingly awesome, but in case you have not, here it is :) Lay down Your sweet and weary head Night is falling You’ve come to journey's end Sleep now And dream of the ones who came before They are calling From across the distant shore Why do you weep? What are these tears upon your face? Soon you will see All of your fears will pass away Safe in my arms You're only sleeping [Chorus] What can you see On the horizon? Why do the white gulls call? Across the sea A pale moon rises The ships have come to carry you home And all will turn To silver glass A light on the water All souls pass Hope fades Into the world of night Through shadows falling Out of memory and time Don't say: «We have come now to the end» White shores are calling You and I will meet again And you'll be here in my arms Just sleeping [Chorus] And all will turn To silver glass A light on the water Grey ships pass Into the West

I have been brought to tears by you, now for the third time. While music is insanely important to me, it takes real talent to move me to such emotions. You have done this many times before. Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was the first book I ever read and understood. I was four. There are so many amazing memories tied to that series, along with The Hobbit. Thank you, Mr. Hollens. Thank you for making my already wonderful memories that much more amazing. Please don't stop making music like this. ♥

I played this song as a tribute to my Grandmother last year when she passed away. I had not seen her or home for 4 years after joining the Marine Corps. I was making plans to see her when I got the news. I have broken bones, separated my shoulder, and puked blood in training and sports and never cried for any of those things....but playing this song took all of my strength not to burst into tears on my camera. I had hoped she was going to be able to be see my wife and I get married, but due to her health she said she would only be able to be there in spirit, and I can tell you that I know she was there with us. I love you Gram, and one day the ships will call me home and I will see you again.

I heard you sing this song years ago because of my love for lord of the rings. But today it hits differently because weeks ago I had to make the hardest decision in my life and sign a DNR for my son. I pray to meet him again someday; this song gives me hope that I just might.

Well, because most people these days are obsessed with retarded, auto-tuned, scandalous, drug-addicted, drama-inducing, defiling, disrespectful celebrity bimbos and whores who have no respect for themselves or others. Just look at two of the most famous people in the U.S., Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus. Look at JB, who got a major boost to his fame when he TP'd somebody's house and got arrested. Yeah, great model, kids.

Peter I've only just come across your work. I've bought your LoTR Album after hearing Misty Mountains and this. I have to say this is one of my very favorite songs. It moves me to tears. Your version is no different. Incredible work and truly moves me. Thankyou for this and the other songs you've done on this album.

This version of this song made me cry, not just because of how beautiful it is but simply because Peter manages to sing it flawlessly. Other versions of this very song (including the original one) don't touch my heart as this one does. It amazes me how Peter is capable of show emotion through his voice, this includes many more of his songs. I'm thankful that you've manage to help me face depression and anxiety with your songs. Thank you so much Peter Hollens, you're awesome!!

I have to say this is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard somebody Sing. and the way you do it In acapella Style, using your own voice and your own sounds, its breathtaking. but I want to take a moment to actually thank you and your crew, so that It is known, that I am very very grateful for what you do. in all honesty and truth, for some reason it seems to have helped me with the grieving and loss of my mother. though I lost her a while ago, there really wasn't anything I find that would help me. But then I found your music and there is just something about this song by you and your crew that seemed to have opened me up. that made the grieving process seemed a little easier. to give you a little insight, As of January 7th 2015, my mom has been gone for about 11 years now. I never got over the fact of losing her, she was my best friend, everything I could have ever wanted or needed in my life. She had lung cancer...I took the loss of her very very hard, shut myself away didn't really care. Then I was looking up the soundtrack to the Hobbit and links upon links I came upon you and your crew. I just recently started watching your videos this year, and with me being a very big fan of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings and how much I've loved their songs when I was listening to them through the movie I figured why not. The moment I heard the songs by you and your crew, something changed in me, lightened me up. I don't need to continue with my life story, but I just wanted to thank you and your group. I've been interested in acapella for a while But when I seen your videos along with your wife's videos and your other crew members videos, there's just something about your music, it captivated me and you helped me. Your music helped me! I just want to throw that out there and thank you so much for that. Though we may never meet I'm sure, though I really would not mind, I'd love too meet ya'll, but I'd like to say I'm thankful that somehow someway you were actually able to help me out through your music without even knowing It. till now. :) Love all of ya, keep up the great work, can't wait to see more. ;)

One of my grandmas passed away in January of 2008. We had lost my grandpa just a little over 4 years before. Even though my mind, and my heart revolve around music, I have no talent for it, vocal, or instrument, though I did play clarinet for 8 years. I wanted to speak at her funeral, to help honor her memory as one of the best people I've ever known in my life. So since I can't see worth a darned, I recited the lyrics to this song. Every time I hear, or think about it, I think of my grandma. This song is special to me. I have never heard a version of it that wasn't Annie Lennox's original from the Return of the King soundtrack, until yours! Thank you for doing the song justice, and honoring it's meaning, and the healing it brings to us all! I see a lot of other people who have commented on this video have had similar stories, and I know we all thank you soooo much!!

I saw the final Hobbit movie yesterday, and the first thing I thought today was, "Man, I really need some LOTR/Hobbit covers to listen to..." So, naturally, I come to your channel, Peter. I think I've been subscribed since you covered "Misty Mountains" from the first Hobbit movie and I haven't regretted a single minute of it. Every song you do is utterly breathtaking and practically perfect in every way (don't know why I'm referencing Mary Poppins there, but it fits!) I believe you're going to post a cover of "Song of the Lonely Mountain" soon, right? I'm kind of worried that I'll need my trusty box of tissues on hand... Which isn't a bad thing! If I do cry, it'll probably be because you posted yet another extraordinary cover. I don't really know how to wrap this up other than to say thank you for all of your amazing songs throughout the years. Can't wait to hear what you do in the future. :)
