While this was uploading, I saw that they removed the real life bus from its location today. Also, I'm out of town next week, so there won't be any videos, but I'll be back to the normal schedule the week after.

It's crazy timing that you dropped this video as they were removing the bus. Life's funny eh? I hope they decide to put the bus somewhere that is more easily accessible so that people can still make the pilgrimage, albeit a much safer one.

Fun Facts: - Eddie Vedder instantly agreed to do the soundtrack before he even knew what the film was about. - The Moose was actually local roadkill. - Emile lost 40 pounds for the role. - The man who dropped him off in the opening scene and gave him the boots plays himself. - Sadly earlier this year the real "Magic Bus" was lifted by chopper and taken away to stop travellers from trying to reach it, as some have had to be rescued or have died. - Emile wears Chris' real watch in the film, which was given to him as a souvenir. - Shia LaBeouf was considered for the role. - Sean Penn waited 10 years to make the film to make sure he had the approval from the McCandless family.

@Vincent And those songs are just from Ten. Personally I think PJ's best album was No Code. PJ has a great catalog of work and I enjoy all of it. It's just my own opinion. When Into the Wild came out, at that specific point and time in my life, this soundtrack hit me much harder and more deeply than any other PJ work had. Rise, Big Hard Sun, Long Nights, Guaranteed... these were a siren call to me at that time when I wanted to get away from life and civilization in general. I still listen to all of it, but when nearly anything from Wild comes on it just hits me differently.

@Andrew Powers The darwin awards is all about people being really dumb killing themselves, which does pertain to Darwinism. Its just a joke tho. Like, people who take selfies hanging off of skyscrapers and shit. If they manage to kill themselves before reproducing, the human gene pool is slightly more intelligent. This particular case is very ironic. These people want to hike there, because someone died hiking there.

Or maybe don't be stupid and naive and make a plan and don't go into the wild with just a backpack? Plenty of people have untethered themselves from the modern world and built houses from scratch in the wilderness, set up a farm and eventually moved there full time and are doing just fine living with nature. Hell Primitive Technology has made a whole youtube channel out of it.

@@FireflyFalafel this has been debated to death and at the end of the day it's already been determined, Chris would still be alive today if he hadn't mis-identified the berries he ate, it poisoned him to the point that he couldnt eat the food he did have and was Too physically weak to leave so he died. if they had just been normal berries, he would have made it AND he wasn't the only person to make that mistake, it was just fatal for him.
@courtneyvaldez7903
@courtneyvaldez7903 4 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. Chris was a very naive, shortsighted, self-righteous hipster type, and the book actually has A LOT of criticism aimed at him whereas the movie is 100% sympathetic....but you also connect to his passion for wanting more out of life and seeing that possibility in the world around him. His heart was in the right place, even if it lacked perspective, and by going out and trying to make something special out of his life he lived a far more interesting life than he ever would have had he not. That doesn't make his decisions necessarily intelligent, however. It's a curious story that should be seen for the cautionary elements AND for the ways in which it shows how one person tried to break through the narrow confines of the human experience we've limited ourselves to. Either way, I'd be very careful in showing this movie to some impressionable young person without critically engaging with the material, because the movie, as much as I love it, does a poor job of examining the "other" side. Emile Hirsch is great, though...he's one of those actors I always like to see show up in a movie, even as I know the performance will probably go underappreciated.
@Opie2
@Opie2 4 жыл бұрын
Another interesting hypothesis that was postulated later, was that Chris ate some type of wild seeds while he was stuck in that area because the rapids wouldn't allow him to leave. Apparently, these wild seeds slowly give you a paralytic effect and would slowly sap him of his energy and eventually his life. I don't think this was definitively proven but it makes a lot of sense as he just withered away there. Really sad story that still tugs at my heartstrings to this day.

bit late to the party, but i studied this in y11 at school and loved it, and im glad you liked it too! heres some details that just add to the bitter tragedy of chris' story: - he could have crossed the river if he had of trekked a little further up the river - the berries were only inedible at that specific time of the year - ron started drinking again after he found out that chris had died love the reactions and thankyou!!

Hey Brandon, it's so amazing that you decided to review this masterpiece of a film. I remember going to the theatres in the year that it came out and being almost transfixed by what was unfolding on the screen. The story based on the life of Chris Mccandless sheds light on this person's unique idealism and subsequent experiences. I feel that people like Chris only come by once in a lifetime and I've heard harsh criticisms of him that he was completely foolhardy, reckless, was way in over his head, selfish with his parents, and was embarking on an almost death wish. Although I respect those perspectives, I see Mccandless as a young man who was seeking the true essence of life. To honestly live life and not just simply exist is something I think all humans strive for and are afraid that they'll go through their lives full of regrets and a bunch of " what ifs?". I do agree that Chris's unpreparedness cost him his life, unfortunately. I also see how people perceive him to be selfish. I've always thought that Chris should have at least contacted his sister and/or parents to let them know that he was safe, happy, and doing what he felt was the best venture. You have opened my eyes to a lot of possible metaphors/symbolism that until now completely went over my head lol. Such as the scene when he is speaking to Rainey (the hippie) on the beach about how some folks feel that " they don't deserve love, they walk into empty spaces, trying to close the gaps of the past". When you were alluding to the fact that maybe Chris was implying about his own relationship with his parents. Very insightful on your part. Regarding the titled chapters throughout the film, I see these as the reinvention of his true self. If you remember at the beginning of the film when he's carving his " declaration of his independence" onto that piece of wood. One of the lines was " to kill the false being within and victoriously conclude the spiritual revolution". Chris came from a privileged well to do type family whose values seemed to promote high education, hard work, and materialism. I believe that Chris's reinvention/rebirth in this film was one of many metaphors for emancipating from his wealthy family to uncage his authentic and genuine form. Into the wild is possibly imo one of the most beautifully shot cinematic films ever. Hats off to you brother for analyzing this movie in your way!

Hi Brandon . I don't know why I put off watching "Cast Away" with Tom Hanks for so long but I had not seen it until I watched it with your reaction just a few minutes ago and I enjoyed Cast Away much more than I was expecting . Now given I have just watched "Into The Wild" a few minutes apart from Cast Away .....my thoughts on going on a long journey are well put to rest..... for now . I was basically entranced by both movies . it's a given that Tom Hanks ordeal / experience was a much happier turn around from Chris's adventure / journey ; both brought me to tears and it will be years from now if I ever forget Chris.....what it must emotionally take for anyone to up and abandon a way of life they always knew before ?? I appreciate your channel very much Brandon .

Oh man. I remember seeing this film when I was like 11 years old. The ending and the realization that the film was based on a real person fucked me up so much that I actually never rewatched it. Thank you for letting me see the film through your eyes. I really enjoyed your commentary on it ❤

I remember reading the book this movie is based on back in the day and it's sadder because he really died needlessly. The movie doesn't make it clear, but what happened is that Chris didn't realize that he wasn't actually trapped there and could've taken a different route that wasn't blocked by the flooded river and gotten back to civilization pretty easily. He just didn't know it. He wasn't sufficiently prepared to live off the land, and made a few unfortunate mistakes that resulted in him staving to death within walking distance of people who could've helped him.

One of my favourite films. I also did not realise it was based off true events when I watched it. I think it's maybe also a book, but I could be wrong. A great film that not many will have seen is a film called Life is Beautiful. Italian film I think, set before and during WWII.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is an amazing movie :D - Catch Me If You Can as well. I didn't realize that was Catherine Keener! She is in the Showtime series KIDDING with Jim Carey that is really good. The direction is absolutely amazing. The Peanut Butter Falcon was an underrated movie that no one I talk to has seen.

FYI today they removed the abandoned bus from the wilderness due to so many tourists attempting to reach it and getting into trouble and needing rescuing. They removed it by Chinook, so whilst sad there are some pretty cool and surreal footage of the thing flying.
