Setting the Dog Traps Again

There has still been a bot of dog activity around again so I decided to try the traps again. Unfortunately I didn't manage to get any dogs but can't complain about a few more foxes.

A couple of foxes better than nothing, with wire loops we use a modified offshore swivel knot and crimps in wire up to 4 mm never had one slip. If you form a granny knot in the wire with a reasonable tag line then pass the tag line through the loop till the tag line lays down the standing line then crimp. The twisted loop forms a spring of sorts

Firearm through fence first, best laid down muzzle safe (if stood up 101% where it cannot be knocked over). Then cross fence and pick it up safely. Common cause of casualties, easily overlooked until that bang wakeup, or otherwise.

If your rifle is particular about feeding the ammunition it uses, it will probably be an issue with the magazine lips. The shape of the projectile determines how the cartridge is lifted as it moves forwards. Most often the lips aren't wide enough to release the back of the next cartridge easily, you could try opening them out, usually the back ones that hold the rim. Try little steps, about half a mm at a time. Rarely are they too loose but that can be the issue, if so, close the lips.

Thanks but no that’s not the problem. Even if I feed one into the chamber by hand and use the forward assist I still can’t get the bolt all the way shut. There must be some projectiles that are slightly bigger🤔

I like your s/s wire strops, from my experience the wire will break before the swages give way if they are crimped properly.

Thanks mate. I got the idea from Clark McGhie's Wild Country. Thats handy to know. I did splice the eye first which will hold as good anyway but really only used the swages to tidy up the ends so they don't get hooked up or the dogs don't chew and undo the splice like they almost did in my previous video.

Try the Winchester high velocity power points as I can definitely vouch for them as have been using them in my old Stirling for bout 30 yrs and it’s a tack driver for accuracy. I used it during a recent cull and it was dropping roos at 80m no problem with throat shots. A mate who is basically a pro shooter was quite amazed as we used it side by side with his 22/250 for the shots upto 300m. When we could have semi auto rifles I found it high enuf powered to run faultlessly with no jams so it’s all I use now 👌 Stay safe budd 🤙

I did try them but they wouldn't feed properly and kept jamming up. This rifle is very ammo fussy so i just stick with what is reliable in it. CCI standard velocity and federal 38gr high velocity. They are the only ones I've found that don't give me trouble.

G'day Josh one year I had a run on wallabies scratching up the traps I actually hooked one up by front paw I was amazed that they were interested in the dog and fox urine I was using it seemed to be attracting them at the time.How do you like the little Ruger ranch I got one last year in 223 terrific little gun so accurate.

Yeah I've caught them like that as well. Real pain though. But i did get one once and reset it and got a dog the next night. Must have smelled the blood and got inquisitive and got caught. Yes i love the rifle. My most used gun I have. Probably had a several thousand rounds through it already and still performing well.

I'm surprised you get so many Fox with the dingoes around here in the states the cayots either run a fox off or they kill them

Hey mate I’m in QLD and here it’s cat C. It’s a great fun gun to use. But I’ve up graded it a bit. I have put a Hogue grip on it and a victor precision two stage trigger 👌 and a titanium firing pin and tool steel ejector. Can definitely recommend it although it is very ammo fussy. The only ammo that shot accurately and didn’t jam up all the time in mine is CCI standard velocity and federal 38gr High Velocity. The CCI is the most accurate though

@@CrazyDog651 they just won’t fit in the chamber for some reason. Ozzie put a KIDD barrel in his because the original barrel wasn’t accurate. Mine isn’t the most accurate either but with the CCI rounds I can get about 1” groups at 30m
