The priest's comment that she "didn't look like an epileptic" is wild considering that epilepsy (no matter which type or severity you have) is not associated with any physical features apart from the seizures, so unless the patient is currently having a seizure, you can't tell they have an epilepsy just by looking at them.

There was the death of a child recently by exorcism in California, USA. The toddler was crying a lot and the mom thought it was demons. Her, her uncle, and the priest were arrested, charged, and found guilty. There is religious freedom but that doesn't give you a right to kill your kid with the excuse of "they had demons."

I also can’t help but think, how is it much different to have someone die via exorcism and excuse yourself my saying “Now they’re free from the demon,” as opposed to straight drowning them to death and saying the same thing? “No! You don’t understand! My religion says I’m allowed to suffocate the devil out and if the patient can’t be resuscitated afterward that’s simply God’s will!”

I think the thing that really angers me regarding this tale is that less than 30 years after Annelise died there was a movie about what she suffered. Even today, you see movies with possession in it, replicating a tonic clonic seizure - this is a medical emergency that causes us to lose consciousness, we lose oxygen to the brain and we can die from it. As someone with Epilepsy, I wish every actor who has to play a possessed character would learn fully about Epilepsy before deciding that is what they want to use as a sign of possession. What they do perpetuate the stigma people have against Epilepsy.
@nowt2957
@nowt2957 11 ай бұрын
I think the problem here is that "possession" actually means epilepsy in a lot of cases - it's the word ignorant and dangerous people use for it and, in this case, had their way with the sufferer and killed her. If somebody were to accurately portray somebody "possessed by the devil" they would do nothing out of the ordinary as there is no such thing. Possession is made up by the feeble minded and the ignorant.

So let me understand this: They did the exorcism in Secret, on the grounds of 'she doesn't look epileptic?' I have a feeling this was less about the exorcism and more about the glory of 'divine healing.' That the priests doing this only thought about the bragging rights they would have afterwards. Being able to 'prove' that a clear medical illness is really 'demons that can be banished,' is a big feather in the cap for any bishop.

@ferretyluv

Exorcisms aren’t performed nearly as often as they used to be thanks to medicine and the church had even said that 99% of the time it’s just mental illness or physical ailments. However, some uneducated people really do believe that their epilepsy is caused by demons. So an exorcism has to be done for them to be convinced to see a doctor.

I know a lot of people who don't think exorcisms are a thing that still happens in reality today but no, there are absolutely still 'exorcisms' today - I knew someone who was forced through one by their (thankfully now long ex) boyfriend who wanted to 'cure' them of their depression and bisexuality. He just kidnapped her after school one day and drove her to a church that did them. Between her story and the varied negative church experiences myself and a lot of other people I knew experienced, there was a time when I really wanted to write a version of the exorcist from the point of view of the girl (where everyone else was the 'possessed monster' in the way it was depicted that Reagan was possessed in the movie, but the underlying implication would be that the adults were just monsters to treat the child like that) but I backed away from it because I actually scared and upset myself with what I was writing. Which probably means it was achieving what I set out to do but I didn't have the constitution to go through with finishing it.

And in some religions, parents do have their children baptized shortly after birth. But like I said, if it's not your cup of tea when you get older you just stop going.

@@addicted2monster88 Oh, it may be different in different countries... I'm from Sweden, and what I mean with "born into the church" is that I *on paper* was a christian just by being born - I payed taxes to the church, for example. My parents did baptise me when I was a baby, but that wasn't what made me "christian", as I stated above. When I was 15 I was allowed to talk to the church, and sign a paper, and that meant that I no longer was a part of the church/christianity, and no longer had to pay taxes to the church, but it also affects the right to be married and have a funeral ceremony in church. Sweden may act like church and state are separated, but it doesn't show that much in real life. Now adays one doesn't get born into christianity at least.

@jameswatson5807 11 ай бұрын
@@hannahp1108 Wrong what you call Severe mental illness there is no treatment, it is live long, psychiatric hospital cannot do anything only sedate you. These folks do need exorcism, because of various astral life forms, that have a parasitic nature, attach themselves to feed, this causes. Depending on the life form the high the life form the more chance of mental instability, but most people have lower life forms, where there is no mental instability. The lower lifeforms they just suck your energy, they won't use you body to do crazy things, but the high life forms, they will take your body for a joy ride, stabs people eat their face. They only create chaos that is why when people abuse stimulants, the usage leave you vulnerable to these things, example so you take a high doses of crack cocaine, a few minutes you might see and hear and FEEL a large insect enter the room. Say the size of a cat, mainstream thinking is that it is an hallucination, there is nothing in thinking that, it would be common sense to assume that it is your mind. As hobby I looked deeper into this because I notice there is a patterns, that people don't even question or they just gloss over. My ex girlfriend was a crack addict and when I was with her i never once took drugs, I had no interest but I had a mainstream thinking back then, she said somthing that i never forgot. She said black guys who take crack see spiders and try to pick them off their body, I laughed at this, it as only years later I question what she said, when some guy who takes amps on a regular. He told me when he stays up for days he starts to see spiders and this guy is white, I remember what my ex girlfriend friend told me. I realised I should have question the idea of it, because it makes no sense if it is in our imagination why are so many black guys seeing the same thing. My curiosity has led to to reality there is more to reality than what we know, the astral reality is something that is hidden from us, animals can see this reality, but 99% of humans cannot. For what ever reason 1% of humans can see this astral reality I think I am far to generous with that number, it is far less than that.

"Didn't look like an epileptic"??? Coming for someone who ISN'T a doctor...and that there is no "look" to an epileptic. I know because one of my aunts was epileptic and lived with it until she passed from cancer. You wouldn't have known that she had anything wrong with her UNTIL she had a seizure. Some seizures were just her staring off into space and others were violent and she needed to be laid on the ground, on her side, with a pillow under her head until it was over. I think something important to note here is how powerful the brain is. If someone truly believes they are haunted or possessed, and intensely reinforces that fact for themselves, it might as well become reality. Simply with the power of believing it hard enough, people can cause themselves all sorts of health problems. Hell, there are times where someone has simply believed they have been shot and fallen straight down, dead, only for people to realize a bullet never touched them (literally scared to death). The shock of it just stopped their hearts and bam, down they go. Most of the time they just pass out though, in these cases of shock and assumed injury. There's been a LOT of cases where exorcism IS more or less a form of mental health therapy (albeit sometimes unsafe and strange), because it's basically a placebo. People believe it will help, so it does. What better thing to cure a problem created of human imagination, than with more human imagination? Sometimes reality is a bit stranger than fiction in that regard... But it works. Someone who believes themselves possessed and is hurting themselves because of it who is 'treated properly' by some form of exorcism and proclaimed cured may very well become better and never have that issue again. Honestly, while it's wild, it's a testament to the strength of the human mind and our ability to fabricate our realities from nothing. It may not always be a good thing but we are damn creative and impressive creatures.

Funny thing, I underwent an exorcism too. The Orthodox Church has it as a standard practice for those being baptized, or converting through Chrismation. Suffice to say, it was a rather uneventful baptism that I underwent, and the service was rather beautiful.

From my understanding, one of the requirements of the diocese (sp?) At least now, is that the person requesting the exorcism has to have proof that both a psychiatrist and a medical doctor have both said they can't explain the symptoms the person is exhibiting. I've watched a few interviews with catholic exorcists and they all say that being a skeptic is an essential part of the job and that only approximately 1 in 5000 people are "approved", that most of the people they see, they end up referring to the requisite medical professionals. I'm not saying anything about how they operated with Anelise, I'm only saying what I've heard is current. (I'm not catholic, I just hyperfocus on demons once in a while 😂)

Whilst that might be the official line they give, I wonder how often that is worked around or ignored. It shouldn’t be easy to do so, and I hope it isn’t but I also don’t trust an organisation that has and still does carry out such cruelty towards people.

That might be what they say they'll do, but when my then-boyfriend in the early 90s decided he wanted an exorcism it didn't take much more than driving him to the nearest Catholic Church to talk to a priest. They scheduled it for one evening, had him come by the church, and I guess did it (they made me wait out in the parking lot in my car so I can't confirm what they actually did). Didn't actually change anything or make him better, though, because of course demons aren't real and he wasn't possessed, he was just an asshole.

I choose to see this as a greater problem with humanity. It's not religion that does it, it's humans that do it. Yeah, you've probably heard this plenty, but the way I see this, we might've landed on the moon and created chat bots that can write in human languages, but we're still animals. Most of us are just on auto pilot and don't do much thinking of the self reflecting variety. We're inherently selfish, sniveling at the dirt - some more than others but everyone contemptedly views others who do not follow their way of life. It's not religion, it's culture. God vs buddha, loving dogs vs eating dogs, ssocialism vs capitalism. Sorry it's 4 AM, and I am bored. Stay safe. :D

Prior to that, exorcism was still very much left to the bishops and vatican after the fact with the priest making ultimate decision. The catholic church never has been a top defender of human rights and a death here and there from the callous application superstitious belief compared to those in the crusades, the witch panic of europe, the roman inquisition and later the Spanish Inquisition, the conquests in the new world, and pretty much every major historic slaughter. I'd like to mention in your comment about the 16th and 17th centuries seeing a "resurgence" of witch trials, that's a bit misleading. While belief in witches was widely accepted throughout most of medieval history (although the catholic church insisted throughout the period that there were no such beings as witches), the sort of mass trials and hysteria we associate with belief in witches was basically entirely novel to the protestant reformation and its aftermath. Most medieval catholics had a much broader, more liberal view of the world than we stereotype them as having today.

As someone raised Catholic, and an Epileptic, I have trouble with this case. I do see some signs of epilepsy, however, there are things in this case that I have never heard of being connected to the disorder. Possessed or not, however, an exorcism is not typically dangerous practice. At worst, it should normally be no different than a placebo that makes one think they are better. So these priests really screwed up in my mind. The problem shouldn't be using an exorcism, the problem was the treatment by the priests.

You could, but then you're doing some classical racism. It's fine if you do, but I bet the idea probably makes you uncomfortable. Having attended at least 2 exorcisms carried out by an Orthodox priest -- not to mention the exorcisms that are (believe it or not) included in the regular baptism rite -- the fact that the RC church's exorcism ritual hasn't changed since the 17th century isn't especially remarkable. Orthodoxy is quite good at conveying the impression of unchanging, unbroken tradition. This is, in reality, far from true, but I know of no analysis suggesting that its exorcism rite has changed significantly in centuries. There's no elaborate procedure for requesting permission to perform an exorcism. The priest can simply do it on his own, usually at the request of the family or even the person themselves. It's not usually so much outright possession that's the problem, just disturbances a person believes are due to demonic activity. There was, by the way, nothing dramatic during these exorcisms. There usually isn't. Go figure.
