I relate to what James said about contradictory information causing a traffic jam in your brain. In college, I had the same kinds of experiences in lectures where if something didn't make sense, I'd stop listening and start flipping through past notes and running other scenarios in my head to connect the pieces. Physics classes were just spent deriving formulas by myself because I didn't believe an equation was "real" unless I proved it to myself. Took hours to learn anything, but once it was there, it stayed there permanently because it was contextualized and there was a clear path of logic to it.

ENTPs and INTPs are so similar. We usually really understand one another on such a great level. I get along better with them than I do ENFPs. I also find that ENTPs can also be as introverted as INTPs at times. - Cheers from Toronto (ENTP) 😆

My grandma was an ENTP. Gosh she was the wildest grandma on Earth :) Once she came home at 3 am with a bag of money she won playing poker with her workmates. As an ENTP, I really envy INTP's. I love how they use their Ti and Si to dive super deeply into one topic. I'm so spread out and I constantly wish to dive in deeper but its so hard to. I guess thats my Si- aspirational needing to be employed.

TPs are Si-users. They usually seek or actively provide contexts to externalise clarity. That's why they're chatty with their ideas, whereas Ni-users would just process meanings in the backseat.

Great talk. Really helps me to understand NTPs and Ti in general. As an INFP, I've ran into misunderstandings with INTP friends, and we view the world sometimes vastly differently, but I very much appreciate their way of articulation and melting concepts into simple understandable facts. It's really admirable what they do, even though I don't necessarily want to go to such depths with thinking myself, I do value people who do take it as their mission.

To James: What I found helpful in emotional situations is something my mentor mentioned once, to respond to the emotion behind the question and not the actual question itself. For example: a patient's daughter is crying and yelling 'Why is my dad dying?!'. She doesn't actually want a response as to what the exact cause of their death is, she wants consolation and someone to just rub her back. gie her a hug, hold her hand or sometimes just be quiet. Maybe a better example is a patient with delirium and their wife is scared shitless of what's happening and crying 'why is that happening, is he dying', the emotion here is being afraid, the response should address that and mention that we'll do our best so that it doesn't come to that or if appropriate, just a firm 'no, I don't think he's dying' Hopefully, I got the idea across.

I agree with this, but I also believe it’s situational. Sometimes, when people are overwhelmed with emotion, they need that objective perspective from someone else to tell them where their emotions are taking over. Kind of like a “slap in the face” of reality. As I mentioned, this is situational, and seems to be more needed in times where someone could let emotions drive decisions and abnormal behavior. Well said, though!

To JAMES: The bed gets made because when the covers are a mess, the energy of the room feels completely chaotic. On a logistical level, when the blankets are a rumpled pile, items get lost in them. It’s easy to find things on a bed when the blanket is a smooth, flat surface. Another logistical reason to make the bed is that it makes a very useful, large horizontal surface on which all kinds of activities can be carried out. If a rigid surface (i.e., table) isn’t necessary, then a bed will certainly do. There have been times when I was starting my day, and the bed had not yet been made, but I was doing something that required me to set something down. The other horizontal surfaces weren’t big enough, but the bed wasn’t ready for it, so it was a great inconvenience. I’ve also set things down on an unmade bed, then very quickly forgot about it (I have the “out of sight, out of mind” type of brain). I’d then be frustrated that I wasn’t able to find this thing, since I tend to be organized and not generally forgetful, but it was solely due to the unmade bed that the object was “hidden” from me. Perhaps you’ve been around people who do things purely out of tradition (all Sensors?), but if I implement a process, there’s ALWAYS a purpose for it, and I’m constantly seeking & open to ways to iterate and optimize my processes-it’s so exciting to discover better ways to do ANYTHING! As for dishes, I used to always wait till there was a full sink, or just wait until the end of the day, but again, I came to feel that it created STAGNANT energy in the space. Cleaning & organizing have to do w/ keeping the energy MOVING, for those of us who are wired for renewal and wanting a BLANK SLATE when finishing an activity or starting a new day. During certain times of the year when the ants invade the house, their keen sense of smell leads them to that tiny bit of food residue on a dish/bowl/cup, so used dishes can sit around for longer than 5 - 10 min. Yesterday’s mess shouldn’t be carried over to a new day (unless it’s an ongoing project), because then the day won’t feel fresh-I like starting w/ a new canvas. My mind also feels cluttered when I see disorganized clutter (though I’m probably more of a maximalist, so I designate a home for everything), so I have to create order to set MYSELF up for success. I know that I have to have things set up a certain way for myself, but I’ve never imposed my preferences on anyone. If they can’t/won’t put something away, and it’s not an actual impediment, I’ll just do it myself. Much easier that way, than deal w/ the resistance or hostility of someone who can’t rise up.

My best friend once told me, “after knowing you for a week, I couldn’t decide if you were a vulgar, foul-mouthed strip club comedian or a computer geek. Turned out, you were both!” I think that combination best describes a lot of ENTP’s, however every time I take the MBTI tests, I come up INTP! Anyone have a suggestion why this happens? Am I who I think I am and appear to be to others or what the test says?

As an INTJ I really enjoyed this panel. Sebastian, you remind me so much of an ENTP friend of mine (in his late 40s), even your looks and mannerisms. He’s very good with people and has perfected the art of small talk when approaching someone new, then needling in NT as soon as he can to see if someone bites. He also really enjoys playing the devil’s advocate, wonder if you do too? He’ll throw in a statement that he doesn’t even necessarily believe just to see where it goes. And then thoroughly enjoy the resulting chaos : D In social situations with people he knows well. James, wonder if you’ve read Dr. Dario Nardi’s latest book, The Magic Diamond? I’ve found it really interesting, about growth in the cognitive functions. Would be interesting to hear your perspectives. Joyce, excellent as always!

I understand what James is saying about joined up/cursive writing, but I think it's quicker and more efficient than non-joined. However, I totally agree about tradition for the sake of it being irrational. For example, one PE lesson I decided to wear tracksuit trousers (usually reserved only for cross country running) instead of my usual gym skirt. The teacher complained, and when I asked why she said "It just isn't done." What sort of nonsense logic is that?

It's funny, because I can relate very much to what James is saying even though I'm not an INTP. I think I am an INFP/INFJ with an enneagram 5 wing-something. And I have that "obsessive" trait about wanting to know the truth -and can dig very deep if I find something that don't add up or if I can't piece an understanding together. Makes it take A LONG TIME for me to understand a subject. On Uni I would often say "In don't understand this" for a subject because I couldn't figure out how every little piece fit togther, when in reality most of the time I would understand just as much (sometimes more) than my study group -but because that little wheel/detail the entire knowledge machine/system didn't "fit" I couldn't say I understood the entire mechanism...(and also, if your understanding is based upon your ability to extract the essence/structure/pattern of a mechanism, then if a detail doesn't fit into the system and can't fit no matter what you do, you have spotted the wrong pattern).

1:09:58 I found it amusing that James found it a little amusing to see himself struggle with something that was seemingly simple, yet i can see how true it is in that example... there is an importance to choose the correct meaning of a word/sentence, because words can have multiple meanings which have the potential to cause great misunderstanding of an initial position of an idea, thought or even in a conversation... if you choose the wrong meaning... 😅

Very awesome guests and hosting! I myself have been low-key trying to determine ENTP vs INTP without relying on stereotypes and this was helpful. I've been wondering if I might be an ENTP who has been suppressed in life, but I am quite certain I'm just maturing as an INTP and spending more time with a feeler. (INFJ wife) I still strongly relate to what James says and am jealous of his philosophy thinktank in australia, haha. I did have a friend group of an INTJ and a suspected ESTP that sounds very similar in school though. I found it interesting when Sebastion said his main procedure is "what would I want?" becuase I also followed "the golden rule" for most of my childhood to dictate my morals. (Engrained in my from an INFP mom!) But at the same time, I noticed that most of what I want is "leave me alone" lol so I don't always find that as helpful as maybe a 3rd slot feeler! I also have a story from my teen years where a kid died at school from a medical condition and my INTJ friend and I got in lots of social trouble for not performing grief even though we never knew this guy and never even heard his name or any of his friends... so suddenly realizing you've created an emotional crime scene is ABSOLUTELY a possiblity! By the way, I actually AM a project manager as an INTP and I gotta say... it's not my favorite. I just recently tried to figure out if there is a career that requires absolutely no human interaction and realized there is basically no such thing, lol. But I got here because I excelled in my job as an online moderator (Keeping varied systems/TOS' in my mind and enforcing them neutrally is my Fav!) and was able to typify a number of systems that are now used company-wide from back when we were a start-up. That, I love. The managing of people and empathy is much more of a daily challenge though. But hey, at least I test in the ~75% range on 16p for introversion, whereas I used to test 99%, I guess!

INFP here. Maybe in terms of when trying to explain things? I find that my way of speaking can be quite scattered, because I don't consciously use Ti pretty much at all, but rather have to rely on outer sources with Ne+Te. So, I have a lot of information that I've gathered about facts, but they're not organized in my head, and not as factually analyzed, as an INTP for example would have it. It's much harder to narrow down a topic and bring out the simplified facts. On the otherhand, when talking about matters of feelings or "personal truths" (Fi), I can dive quite deep into a moral discussion and have it make more concrete sense, as my Fi is linked to Si, and thus I'm able to talk about those kinds of issues and topics in a more grounded way, that can be relatable to others. I don't know whether this has anything to do with your question, but I just made a possible connection as to where this thought of yours may have come from.

Look at these NT’s opening up about their emotions and trying to understand why other people emote differently and I also get upset when there isn’t a reason for emotions. Even though I also am a feeler and know most of them don’t. But I understand that viewpoint. My INTP close friend calls a lot for me to describe what the logic might be or emotions of primary feelers. She’s extremely level headed and can understand my life adventures and offers some of the best empathy since she’s logically following my life path. I like INTP’s you can trust them they are extremely loyal. I think they are earnest and similar to INTJ’s often misunderstood. It’s ok, trustworthiness is a rare Skill and I trust my intps with a lot. We need them. ENTPs are amazing at being open and funny and so smart. They help out the intps and INTJs to connect to groups. This was amazing!! The emotions of vulnerability well done. Take care!!

It's funny, because I can really relate to James' rant about things that don't make sense in society. But instead of externalizing it and thinking "the world doesn't make sense in this and this way" I internalize it and think "my ways of doing things must be wrong, because I do it differently than the others". I think I will begin to externalize things a bit more and say it out loud... These male TPs have a confidence in their own perception of the world that I think I can learn a lot from (but I don't know if it's dueable as a feeler, because my natural compulsion to any opinion is right away: would other people find this acceptable if I say this out loud. So a lot of self censuring happens in my head - so the question is wether that is natural or learned thing and whether or not you should work on peeling that self censuring mechanism away or if that is just a survival mechanism build into human feelers brains? We are designed as social creatures after all).

@@universologist1941 Ti builds frameworks of knowledge, the bigger the framework the more difficult it is to make a change, as changing one element may require to update the rest of the framework. This is why Ti desires accuracy and is very doubtful when it encounters shallow information that contradicts the system. Are you sure your explanations were *logical*? From my experience XNTJs tend to have a very different definition of "logical" and "understanding" to IXTPs. Saying that it "works" or "it has always been that way" is not sufficient. After going into in-depth analysis of emotions and motivation it made sense that the specific choice of clothing is a representation of internal desires and it is required in order for other people to judge you. Neither your intuitions nor the practical explanation or examples give any depth of understanding that a Ti user can accept. If you did actually give a run down of the necessary theories in order to update a Ti users framework and they still didn't listen then that's a defunct Ti, not the standard.
