I wish I'd known about cutting faux fur earlier on when I completed my pillows. Fur was everywhere!!! A mess indeed. And the push back, tucking of the fur was brilliant. Beautiful seams. Now I know. Some extra steps are necessary for a beautiful outcome. Thank you. So worth it.

I've always found X-Acto knives with a #24 blade to be the best thing to use with cutting faux fur. You have more control than you would with scissors, and the finer blade glides through the fur fibers and won't cut them as long as you carefully handle the blade. Snap off box cutter blades work too.

Try using a box cutter type knife to cut the backing. Very quick and doesn't cut the fur. Make sure you have a new blade.

Thank you for sharing your ideas. I'm making a wolf "hide" for my son's Thanksgiving play. You have given me some confidence to tackle this project, which sounds so easy but if you've never worked with fur it seems intimidating. Do you have a suggestion for finishing the edge to hold in the fur? It seems to shed from the edges quite a bit. I was thinking of rolling it, like you would do with fabric, but that is awfully bulky and not the look that I want.

What are the best ways to wash/care for faux fur? Are there special moisture rich detergents or special sprays to use after washing to keep fur shiny and manageable? What specials treatments are applied when faux fur is manufactured?

I like your style Wendi. You're very good at explaining what you do and you speak at a perfect pace. Kenneth D King has a new Threads video out on the tools and techniques he uses for faux fur garments. But he cuts right through the backing and fur. He might learn some things from you! One question - do you use a specific pair of scissors for cutting faux fur? Meaning would using them for faux fur damage the scissors for cutting other types of apparel fabric?

Hey, thanks for enlightening me on how to cut fur so much neater!:) My problem is, I got a similar fur to the one in this video. Long pile grey with a darker under coat (this didn't show when I ordered it). With my project, parts will be shaved because it will be used for a face. I'm worried that the grey won't show after shaving. Any tips on shaving faux fur like that?:)

@TheSuperrinad8 жыл бұрын
what stitch did you used to sew them together ?
@TadaKiba10 жыл бұрын
Using a cardboard cutter across the back of the fur or even a steak knife cuts the top of the fabric has less risk if slicing the fur, especially if you have a shorter pile fur. also if you are doing a lot of fur, moving the fur inwards is much easier with a pet slicker brush. I tried to use scissors once, and it messed up a few patches, especially with a duller scissor.
@WendiGratz10 жыл бұрын
That's a great tip - thanks! :-)

Great tutorial Wendi! I have two questions I'm hoping you can answer. I don't have a machine, so I'm wondering which stitch you would recommend for sewing faux fur by hand. I'm thinking a simple whip stitch, but if you recommend another, I'd love to hear your advice. My second question is, since I'm sewing by hand, do I still need to leave a seam allowance of a quarter inch (this seems to be the recommended allowance from what I can gather)? I'm wondering if the seam allowance has more to do with the thickness of the fur in this case, and why I might need to add it.
@WendiGratz7 жыл бұрын
Whip stitch could work - but some faux furs have a fairly loose-weave backing fabric and whipstitches might pull out of that. You could do a test with some scraps and if that seems to be a problem try using a running stitch with occasional anchoring backstitches instead. I've got a tutorial here showing how. www.shinyhappyworld.com/2011/01/how-to-sew-without-a-machine.html
@Rustbukkit697 жыл бұрын
Oooooh, that looks like a great stitch. I actually think that might suit this project even better than the whip stitch. I'll give them both a try and see which works best. Thank you for the speedy reply, as well as your advice! I really appreciate it. Have a fantastic weekend Wendi!

Quick Question... If fur gets trapped in a seam like 3:54 should you try to brush it out, I ask because I've brought a faux fur jacket at the thrift store but one side of the jacket's collar has eaten up the fur, so there's a noticeable line at the seam where the fur is trapped, other then that its an amazing jacket.
@WendiGratz5 жыл бұрын
I would try to pick it out of the seam.
@suepeterson56757 жыл бұрын
hi! I recently bought some faux fur. I tried to tell the gal how to cut it but it fell on deaf ears. she lopped it straight across, fur flew every where.i told her that would happen . so when I got home shook it out really good outside, the birds loved it then vacuumed it..
@cerberus32805 жыл бұрын
Wow OK so big question though. If I made three pieces of a design like blue yellow blue in a lighting bolt pattern could I use the same thing shown here to sew them ?
@WendiGratz5 жыл бұрын
Possibly. It really depends on the specifics of the design. It sounds like something that might be better with applique. There's a video showing how to applique fur here. www.shinyhappyworld.com/2013/01/video-how-to-applique-faux-fur.html
@GazRockIsntDead8 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry if this is a dumb question but I am new to faux fur and wanted to know if you have to hem it or just leave it cut? idk if the fur will fall out over time or what
@WendiGratz8 жыл бұрын
Any cut bits of fur will pull loose pretty quickly - after that it should be fine to not hem it - but some of the backing fabrics can be pretty rough and scratchy at the cut edges and you may want to back it for that reason.

thanks i have to alter a white faux coat to make it bigger I am thinking i wil put a 3 inch strip at the sides goiing right along the inside seem of the sleaves right to the cuffs I DONT KNOW WEATHER I SHOULD JUST USE A NORMAL SEWING MACHINE OR WEATHER I WILL NEED TO USE A STEPING FOOT TO SEW THE FUR PLEASE ADVISE ME I DO HAVE AN OVER LOCKER COULD I USE THAT TO SEW FAUX FUR ?TOGETHER opps caps on any advice would be appreciated i am off to buy the fur for the panels tomorrow
@WendiGratz11 жыл бұрын
You can use any shrug or vest pattern and just use faux fur for it. I'd recommend lining it though for comfort. Good luck!
