Substitutions can also get tricky with the Designated Hitter, especially when you put your DH in the field defensively. When that happens your DH still hits in the same spot in the lineup as before, but now your pitcher has to hit in the spot of the defensive player who was replaced by the DH in the field, so effectively you no longer have a DH. You can always just straight up replace your DH without putting him in the field and you still have the DH position. If you wanted to you could also send your current pitcher up to the plate instead of your DH, but then the DH is out of the game and you also lose the DH, though this rarely happens. However the Angels have been forgoing the DH when Ohtani pitches by hitting him in the starting lineup, which is why you sometimes see him move to the outfield when he’s done pitching.
