I cannot thank you enough for your lessons. I'm 63 years old and have always dreamed of playing a dulcimer. I've been married, raised children, worked jobs, served in various ministries and now I help take care of one of my grandbabies. There was no time for learning an instrument! My beloved hubby passed away and I'm alone. I asked each of my children if they thought it was absurd for me learn an instrument at my age. They both said, "Mom, go for it!" Now mind you, I don't have one bit of musical ability in my body. LOL But everyone I've talked to said it's an easy instrument to learn, I sure hope that's true. I bought an old used mountain dulcimer and once I figure out how to string it and tune it, hopefully I'll be good to go. I appreciate you taking the time to teach folks how it's done!

I've been making guitars (a LOT of guitars) for my son and daughter, as well as family and friends for over 15 years. Now that they're both out of college, time for Dad to learn to make music without cutting wood. This week, mywife bought me a beautiful teardrop dulcimer made by a man in his 70's in Tennessee. Time to see if this old dog still has some tricks he can learn... Thanks for providing these videos, your teaching style is very pleasant.

Thanks so much for offering your videos on KZbin. My plan is to eventually join, just want to get a little better. I'm 68 and have never played a stringed instrument, only the clarinet way back in 4th and 5th grade! I was a nurse for 27 years and was very busy, but I retired in 2021. We were visiting Mountain View, Arkansas a few weeks ago and visited a dulcimer shop and I made the plunge and bought one! You make learning easy and I appreciate that. I grew up with 3 older brothers who played guitar and one was very talented and music was his entire life. I always wanted to learn to play, but life puts other things in our path, but now is MY time to learn a stringed instrument. Thanks so much, looking forward to learning much more!

This video is such a nice find for me! In 1978 I was taking a 3 month long solo journey around the US. On that trip, I bought a beautiful walnut teardrop dulcimer from Jean Shilling who had a store called The Dulcimer Shop in Cosby TN. It was made by the McSpaden brothers. I only ever learned to play one song on it and that was the simple "Boil Them Cabbage Down". I was taught it by a Park Ranger in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park where I was camping. I was so touched when you chose that same simple song of all possible songs to demonstrate! I was only 23 years old and life went on and the dulcimer has been just hanging on my wall ever since. I'm now 65 and I hope to retire this fall. One of many things that I want to do in retirement is to finally learn to play this beautiful instrument which directly links me back to that wonderful time in my life. Your friendly, peaceful way of teaching the basics of beginning to play has motivated me like never before. Your dulcimer looks very much like mine, with the exact same scroll work at the top, and tuning keys, and also sounds just like mine. I would bet that yours is a McSpaden too! I have subscribed to your channel, and cannot wait to start learning. I am sure it will need new strings and I know the keys need to be tightened somehow because they do not stay put when trying to tune it. I still have the same pick and little walnut stick to hold on the strings to play it that Jean gave to me all those years ago. Thank you for this wonderful video! It means more to me than you can imagine! David.
@BanjoLemonade4 жыл бұрын
What a wonderful story! Thanks so much for sharing that with me David. Yes it’s a 1995 McSpadden. I’ve since given it away here on youtube. I have another McSpadden that is a 2015.

Wow, I have my dad's dulcimer (handed down to me) and have always wanted to play it. I was a bit afraid to try. Now, since watching your video I feel confident that I can actually play it. I hope to join a jam at some point this winter and introduce the guitars to a new sounding instrument. Anyway, thanks so much for all the great information. I've already ordered a "Snark" tuner!!! wooo hooo

Thanks for the video Mandy! I have the same tuner as the one you have, so now i know how to use it on the dulcimer. I have a case, but still need a strap. I'm looking forward to getting started with learning how to play the dulcimer. I'm trying to find as many helpful books and videos as I can! Love the shirt! God bless your day!🙏🏻👍🏻

Someone gave me a home made dulcimer. Their brother passed away and he had it set aside for me. Thank you for these videos. I am a good guitarist but I have never had the opportunity to try my hand at a dulcimer. But, I have wanted to for years.

I have wanted a dulcimer made by Warren May in Berea KY for 40 years, and this past Christmas I finally went for it. I have been a little afraid to actually try to start learning, but I found your video and I just played my very first song! Thanks so much for the clear instruction and pleasant teaching style.

when I get better at banjo and learn a few lyre songs I'd like to put one of these together from kit. I'll have a little practice at avoiding intonation-killers by then tinkering with some DIY banjo doin's

I took a class at our Folk school here and built one from scratch! Very fun to do. Not a kit, but huge chunks of wood. But they had a ton of tools and it was nice.

Great video ! Just bought an old Hughes dulcimer on eBay. Should be in my hands at the end of the week. I particularly like vintage items and heard the company, Hughes, was run by a man that was "legendary" in the dulcimer world. He recently passed and his shop in Colorado closed. So it might be more valuable with time. Liked your video and I sure liked your T-shirt ! As my favorite songs are ones of praise to Him. Mike from Boston

Thank you so much for your videos. I am waiting for my dulcimer to arrive of Ebay. I have been getting everything in anticipation of playing. Including new strings. I will make a strap from a thin tie i am (borrowing) from my husband. I am learning so much.
