This was my first video game. My parents allowed me to to play 1 game in week, with 10 minute periods. Later they gave me second computer day in a week so I could play 2 games in a week. My computer days were mondays and wednesdays. Putting the CD in the computer, the smell, the intro, the game - everything was incredible. I will never forget those days.

My dad took me to the Sharks vs Red Wings game in 99 for my birthday l, also got me this game that day. Sharks lost in detroit so I binged this game til I won the cup with SJ. Also, game intros did not hold back then. Now it's like, oh you wanna play a game? Time to update for an hour while we try to con you into buying dlc packs.

I grew up in South Africa as a kid and somehow ended up with this game. I know absolutely nothing about ice hockey though, I'm guessing it was probably because it couldnt sell there (nobody watches hockey) and the shop put it crazy cheap or something to get rid so I picked it up. I ended up getting so hooked on it. It was AMAZING, I played it all day every day. Even though I had quite a few games, this is one of my most loved and memorable games for me growing up. Even to this day I have never watched an actual ice hockey game in my life. If you showed me a photo of any of these players IRL I wouldnt know a single one, but I still remember all their names even 20 years later 😂

Wholesome and relatable in a way. I grew up in a hockey country so it was in my blood, but I didn't have access to new video games that much. So I relied on getting random 5€ games from discount and playing the shit out of them

Man, I remember when I got this game and loaded it, I'd always press Enter upon seeing the white ice rink of the intro, as I wanted to skip to the main menu and play. Some 6-7 months later, I ran the game and went to the toilet...this is when I heard this song for the first time and realized how much I had been missing for the past half a year. Since then, never ever did I skip this intro when playing NHL 2000.

Wow indeed. I still recognize most of the players in this intro. It's fantastic, always fired me up before the game. I remember intros were pretty good at a point, then they became worse and worse with time until they completely disappeared.

This was the last intro to feature real NHL footage. Already you can see the gameplay being mixed here with real life footage where before this was done minimally. The next step would be the NHL2001 intro where it was pure gameplay footage and eventually EA skipped on making an intro at all. It was a slow, steady decline. Imho a massive mistake. The first time i saw the NHL96 intro with the real footage, not knowing much about ice hockey, i was pumped. It drew me into the sport. Having no intro at all at the end was probably to cut costs, a real shame.

Hear hear! I was actually looking forward to slapping an intro into NHL 08. I thought about replacing the "EA Sports" intro with a nice NHL highlight reel instead. Unfortunately there's no way to skip to skip the EA intro, therefore watching even the best highlight reel would become frustrating after a couple times.
