SS5S's Rage/Concentration meter is easily one of my favorite mechanics in a fighting game because of the theme it represents. Using meditation to sacrifice Rage in order to build Concentration to enter a state of super-zen is literally the most Buddhist mechanic to EVER exist in a fighting game. I didn't even know how rage values and zen values were different per character, and I LOVE that because it uses mechanics to actually convey aspects about how characters relate to this rage/zen state of balance. I would LOVE to do a video about SS5S some day, or maybe just a video discussing my favorite thematic mechanics in a fighting game. -A.B.I.

If you want the most extreme characters- Enja's rage gauge is smallest (enters rage in 1-2 hits as seen in the video) and Yunfei's rage gauge is the largest (takes more than 1 round of life to enter rage) and it makes sense when you look at these characters.

Thank you for a great video. Samurai Spirits Zero Special is indeed one of the best, if not the best game in the series in terms of balance and mechanics. I actually loved the Deflecting mechanic, and they raised the stakes even higher by having it disarm an opponent if it catches a Hard Slash. The Deflect mechanism made the game absolutely tense and very footsies based where you can't simply just throw out a button for the sake of it.

MAN I love videos like these! There are SO MANY fighters out there and it's hard to get a good explanation for what makes each one truly special. ESPECIALLY when it comes to the older yet still beloved games like SamSho 2 and 5 Special. Even moreso with ones only recently getting re-discovered like Sailor Moon S.

I did not know this game had such very deep possibilities. This game can be considered alongside the street fighter three games when it comes to tournament play. It may even surpass it. This game is so good that one can even have fun simply by sitting back and watching the action, "It's extra excellent quality." I cannot say that about any other games except the last blade series to some small degree. Maybe even some of the other samurai showdown games to a lesser extent. Guilty gear comes next in line. Any other games that may resemble guilty gear that I don't know of maybe. I have not really kept up with fighting games for yrs. Recently I saw samurai showdown 2019 which has got me very interested in the samurai showdown games again. After seeing this I am thinking about going and buying 2019 and maybe this one too. Thanks.

I got this game today on steam and it's absolutely awesome thus far. Easily one of the most complex 2D fighters, and one of my favorites at that. Sadly I suck big time at the moment, I've played a few online matches and only managed to squeeze out one single round against a guy who beat me like 6 times straight. Pretty steep learning curve. Nonetheless, I'm enjoying the game a lot. I used to play the original with my friends as a little kid in a burger restaurant that had the arcade cabinet. Good times.

This was a nice recommendation on KZbin's part. I hope you can cover more of the series in a modern light. Preferrably the SamSho 64 series. The second game of that series perfected the Slash/Bust system imo. I hope they'll bring that mechanic back if they do well with this release.

Long time street fighter fan here. And I bought the new samurai shodown on the ps4, and it's amazing, this game is what I've been wanting in a fighting game. I love that you can make a come back from near defeat. I like that I'm not getting frame trapped and throw looked or crush countered constantly. I like that all the characters seem viable and can win tournaments. I would recommend this game to ant fighting game fan.

I was always a big fan of combos so I never got into Samurai Showdown besides 4, with it's (admittedly flawed) dial-up combo mechanic. This video make me want to revisit 5 Sepcial... But I barely have the time to play online and my offline partners wouldn't play it. I like the fact that there's no point in going into practice to learn those combos and that the best way to "git gud" at this game is by playing it with moving foes.

I know this is going to be *extremely* personal, but is V Special significantly better than other games in the series? I know II has a character that is too strong, but I rarely hear anyone discuss I, III, IV, or VI. Both V and II were at AnimEvo this year, but do people mainly prefer II for the art?

SS 3,4,6 are basicaly worse versions of SS5. SS6 is just SS5, but with all characters from other series. So SS6 lacks the stylistic unity. And SS1 is basicaly worse SS2. So, SS5 and SS2 are two main mielstone chapters of SS series
@orlanzo2621
@orlanzo2621 5 жыл бұрын
SS3 is VERY busted from a balance and gameplay standpoint but I love the atmosphere, tone, and music the most in the series. SS2 is considered the best by a lot of people because of how “pure” it is in its mechanics and how everything just “works” fundamentally. It also has amazing art work and presentation. SS4 is another favorite of the community because of its gameplay. It corrected a lot of what didn’t work in 3 and added some missing characters back into the series. It’s very fun to play but is also a little different due to its “dial a combo” system. SS5 Vanilla sucks imo, never liked it. The stages are dead and lifeless, the music is ehhh, and the roster is only ok. Gameplay wise it’s decent but it’s improved upon in every aspect with SS5 Special. SS1 is (obviously) the most limited in the series gameplay wise with no overheads, dodges, supers, etc. but it’s still a fun game to play and is full of personality and “life” when it comes to the stages and presentation. Lots of memories of playing this as a kid. The game that started my love of the series. SS6 is mediocre imo, it’s just a mismatched mess of the previous games stitched together without the charm. The stages are terrible and unfitting, and so is the music. It just has a very “hollow” and “cheap” feeling to it. The UI is also terrible and garish. The only good thing about it is that it has the biggest roster in the series but that doesn’t mean much because it’s very unbalanced. In my opinion SS2, SS4, and SS5 Special are the best in the series objectively. Personally tho I do have a big soft spot for SS3.

@@orlanzo2621 SSV/SP are lazy technicaly though. Probably low budget but they are from 2004, EIGHT years after SSIV, and reuse the same sprites (not that they are bad but low animation count) and many of the backgrounds are "meh" overall. Compare with backgrounds from The Last blade(1&2) from 1997/98.. SSV graphically looks like a 1995 game. It was a bit underwhelming in 2004.

6 tries to be a CvS2 of the series, but suffers from some issues. Out of the 6 "grooves" only 2 are really seen at high level play, one of which is the SS4 groove. Meanwhile, you have a number of useless characters. The game itself feels like a mixed bag of ideas from the various SS games, but these are better served in the games they come from.

As much as I love the idea of playing this, it sounds like an awful lot more memorizing than other fighting games. I already have plenty to know as I play a game like SFV, Skullgirls and GG Xrd. Let alone having to learn... my god how many gauges and what they mean for every character? Now I’m trying to fly a helicopter at the same time as I’m driving an RC drone and a car at the same time. It looks cool, no doubt, but I can’t see myself playing something like that with any proficiency.
