Thanks again for the lesson! I enjoyed it a lot. This was way more physically exhausting than I thought it would be. Very different from the kata practice I’m used to.

Don't know how I missed this comment. It was a pleasure to share the kata, and cool to see how you internalized it. You're a lot more widely studied than I was when I started Uechi, but similar base means many of the learning points were the same. Chip sometimes refers to Sanchin as a training exercise rather than as a kata like most people think of one. It's sort of like musical scales. Not a song, but it informs all the songs. Good stuff!

@@andrewobrienkarate makes sense. The more that I study karate the more that view of kata makes sense to me in general. Thanks again man, hope I can make it up your way again soon.

I've noticed some people do a different number of step/thrusts and also turn in different directions. Is this just different based on lineages or schools? I think I've seen videos of Kanei doing a couple different variations.

Yes, as I understand it, you're exactly right. My teacher refers to Sanchin as an exercise rather than a normal kata. Often we start on the left and do four strikes before a turn. But sometimes we'll start on the right and do 5 or 6 or 7 strikes. It might change based on the theme of class or what sensei is looking for.
