Thanks for the history. I saw an old flim showing Sanchin and its very different than how im being taught today. In the older flim thr karateka have more rounded backs, faster movements and flowed from one movement to the next instead of waiting after each movement. What happened to make it so muchore stiff as im taught today than 60-ish years ago?

I would associate the more modern hardness to the okinawan influence as opposed to the chinese roots. Look at every other okinawan karate style. They use more linear movements and attacks where chinese martial arts are more flowing and smooth. Pangainoon literally means half hard half soft and as the root of uechi ryu it makes perfect sense. Thanks for watching.

@@Toudidojo the video was of a Uechi Ryu practitioner, not sure if it was not sure if it was Kandun Uechi or one of the next higher ranked. What surprises me is that Uechi Ryu isn't that old of a style and there's some key changes within the last 80yrs.

@NorCalDad one thing I've noticed particularly in Uechi-ryu is that there's so many variations. This is because of the political split. A lot of the masters went independent. When you see a Uechi-ryu kata and see a variation it's usually because of who taught it to them.

Are there any Pan Gai Noon schools in China today?
@gene8172 Жыл бұрын
The style is extinct in its original form. It exists only as Uechi-Ryu and Uechi-Ryu’s offspring.

No pangainoon only exists as Uechi-ryu.

As Kanbun taught the art in China someone must have continued it...surely!! I know the Chinese were very secretive back then, but it's hard to believe not one of his students continued it or practised it or had students of their own!

While your hypothesis is sound. There is no evidence to support this theory. Pangainoon is only known and taught as uechi ryu karate and only resurfaced in okinawa. however pangainoon does share techniques with many other chinese martial arts.

@Toudidojo I have however read that Kanbun's teacher Shu Shi Wa had students that survived him and continued his system and who visited Kanbun's dojo in Okinawa. This being the case there absolutely must be some cross over knowledge remaining. Describing a system by it's characteristics ( which is what Pan Gai Noon refers to) rather than its style name are not the norm in China, so there must be an original Shu Shi Wa style name. I have seen elsewhere on YT vids of Fuzhou Tiger boxing that have been likened, although to me the similarities look general rather than specific. This is a truly intriguing topic more specifically as the founders son seems not to have more detail handed to him by his father, even more strange to me given the long tenure of his stay in China.
