You are so freaking creative and talented and just awesome at what you do!!! I've been binge watching your videos and I'm just amazed at what you can do and how your creations come out!! I've been experimenting a bit with my 5 yr old daughter using food coloring for now because she's little and we don't need any really serious dye all over the place lol I had her shake up all of the bottles to mix our colors then took the caps off so we could get started..well my little darling forgot mommy took the caps off and picked up hot pink and started vigorously shaking the UNCAPPED BOTTLE OF DYE...I'll just leave it at that and let you picture what my bathroom looked like! Bet you never tie dyed a whole entire bathroom before lol thought that story might bring a smile to your face because I'm sure you've had your fair share of fails and messes or whatever! Love your videos im learning so much and having fun :)

I have a few questions. In the beginning of the video you said you do two shirts at a time when doing stitch designs. This might be a dumb question but since I didn't see the reveal for both of the shirts separately, did you keep one shirt inside of the other throughout the whole process? If they are layered, do the colors for both of the shirts come out equally as dark/vibrant (in other words does the design look close to identical for both)? Lastly, does stitching different sized shirts at the same time affect the alignment of the design at all? Thank you in advance!
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 4 жыл бұрын
yeah I realized later on I should have given more detail on how I put the two shirts together. Here is a video where I do show that process of centering the tees and putting one inside of the other and lining up the center line for both, this insures that the design will be in the middle of both of the tees. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qHabkqKpq6l0pZY and once I put them together, they stay that way until after they have batched, I do one wash on them on gentle cycle in a net bag, and then I remove the stitches and separate them, and yes I should have shown both tees at the end ... this is the closest way to getting two tees to be almost exactly the same, now and then the dye color may be a little bit off on the two tees, (the inside tee may be a bit lighter if I did not saturate well enough) but most of the time I have a hard time telling which tee is which ... I wish you success in your tie-dye adventure!! let me know if you have further questions

Love your videos, What is the purpose of stiching? Just being able to pull the outline together uniformly?

Thank you and you are welcome. For me, the purpose of stitching was to get great detail in a design that I could not figure out how to fold.... although I did figure how to fold the leaf, I just did not always have good results with it, but stitching gave me beautiful leaves every time ✌🏻 as well as so many other designs, check out this photo on my FB : facebook.com/photo/?fbid=10213737434330413&set=a.3602366818132

@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 6 жыл бұрын
yes you can..... just do one tee.... pull the front forward like in the centering a tee video says...... then figure where you want the leaves to be and draw your center line there and then fold in half there and draw your leaf on, it will have to be smaller of course ..... then stitch .... I can do a video if that is easier

Question! You spun the shirt out in the washer even though it was already threaded? Or did you just spin it out with your hands?

I do the stitching on dry tees, then i pull the threads and tie and then I soak in soda ash and then spin out so it is barely damp and then i dye it
@TheCupitFam
@TheCupitFam 5 жыл бұрын
@@MrTieDye Yeah I just was wondering you spinned the shirt in the washer or with your hands bc I didnt know if it the threads would get messed up in the washer! But then I saw at the end you put them in a mesh bag so that kind of answers my question lol!
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 5 жыл бұрын
yeah I just make sure when I put it into the washer that the tee is not bunched up, so it lays flat against the side and I have not had any problems .... and then after I have dyed it and it has batched, I will rinse in the tee in the sink some to rinse away the soda ash, squeeze out excess by hand and then put into a mesh bag and wash on delicate cycle in hot water.... then I spritz it a bit with the shower nozzle while spinning to rinse a bit.... then I let it spin some more so it is just damp, then I cut and pull the threads with a seam ripper .... then I wash at least two more times in hot water

I have done just a couple stitched letters on tees, I just drew them on and stitched them up similar to the leaf.... I stitched through the whole tee so the letters were on the front and back (although they were backwards on the back of the tee) ... but it was kind of difficult since they had to be so small to fit on the tee, the detail was hard to keep... so now I use thickened dye to paint letters on ....... kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4fLnJJojp1jl6c

How do you thicken your dye? Or do buy it thick already?
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 2 жыл бұрын
in this video, I use Sodium Alginate to thicken the water and I added Salt as it can help push the dye into the fabric, and Urea to help keep it damp so the dyes have more time to bond if you are doing dye painting ... here is a video of how I mix it up and how much of each : kzbin.info/www/bejne/n57EhYuNmbN9itE once I get the thick water made, I test it to make sure it is smooth... any lumps can clog the nozzle, so keep blending.... then I let it cool completely as it will thicken some more... if you are in a hurry, you can put it in the fridge to speed the cooling.... then I test the thickness by putting some in a small bottle and squeezing some onto white paper towel, I like to see it soak in and spread slightly.... if it lays on top of the paper towel, then it is too thick and I will add some plain water and blend some more... once I get the thickness I want, then I will use some of the thick water to make thick dye

I buy them from the Dollar Store, they come in packs of 2 and measure 11 X 14 inches so they are a nice size for images, and they are see through, so now I call an image up on my computer screen and can then lay the cutting Matt on the screen and trace it, then cut it out and create!! ... here is a video on making stencils that shows the matts I use : kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpilfHete9pmq6s

I buy mine from dharma, but there are other sources ..... here are the dyes I use ... www.dharmatrading.com/dyes/dharma-fiber-reactive-procion-dyes.html?lnav=dyes.html .... and they carry the soda ash also, just do a search ...... there are other suppliers of dye, I buy here because I live in Oregon so the shipping is fast and not to expensive .... for the dyes, the main thing to look for if you search for other suppliers is the Procion fiber reactive dyes ..... and for the soda ash or sodium carbonate, some people find it at pool supply stores ..... what is does for tie-dye is raise the pH level of the cotton fibers to 10.6-11.0 pH and this causes a reaction with the dye and cotton fibers ... hope this helps

@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 6 жыл бұрын
I let me items batch for 24-48 hours, so at the point of rinsing the dye are set up good and you are just getting the excess dyes out.... this is the reason to rinse in cold water before you un band or cut ties.... cold water will rinse away the soda ash .... then move up to warm and hot water for your rinse and remove the bands ... then 3 hot washes with the last two being the long soak washes

How do you thicken your dye
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye Жыл бұрын
here is how I make Thick Water and then Thick Dyes : kzbin.info/www/bejne/n57EhYuNmbN9itE I mix up the thick water first.... I start with just HOT water and the Sodium Alginate... and just keep blending until it is completely dissolved, I test it by rubbing some between my fingers ... it should feel completely smooth... if you feel lumps, then you need more blending as these lumps will clog the nozzle of the dye bottles ... once it is smooth, then I add the Salt and the Urea and blend until they are dissolved... then I let it cool completely as it will thicken more as it cools (you can put in the fridge if you are in a hurry) >>>> so once it is cool then I test the thickness by putting some in a small bottle and applying a line to white paper towel... I like to see it soak in, but not spread too much... if it lays on top of the paper towel it is too thick, so I add some plan water and blend, then test again... once I have the consistency I want, then I will add the dye powder.... so if I am making a lot of one color, like I do for black, I will put some thick water in a mixing cup and then add dye powder and blend it up .... BUT, if I just want small amounts or several colors, then I use a painter pallet and add some thick water to the sections and then add some dye powder and stir it up and then you are ready to paint .... so previously I have a white tee that I spray the area I am going to paint with soda ash and let it dry completely, I make sure to have something inside the tee so the dye does not go to the back of the tee.... most time I will use butchers paper and just iron a piece into the center of the tee(the back side of where I will be painting) once the tee is dry, then I paint it and then if possible, I will put in a tub with a lid to keep it damp for longer, or I will lay it flat and cover with a piece of plastic sheeting........ the Urea helps to keep the dyes wet for longer during the batching I tried painting on a slightly damp tee once and the edges of where I paint got all fuzzy looking instead of a nice line... so I alway paint on a dry tee Here is a video where I mixed up just a few colors in a pallet : kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4fLnJJojp1jl6c I tie dyed this tee and left a white space to be painted, I cued the video up to the point of painting it ... I hope this helps ... have fun and I wish you success!!

Do you thicken the green too? Or just the black?
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 11 ай бұрын
the green has a tiny bit of thickener in it just to slow the spread, but I have also used regular dye for the green ... but yes the black is very thick so it does not spread much at all... but I use my cuticle pusher to 'press' the black day down into the fold so I get a solid line, otherwise the black dye would sit at the top of the fold and cause just a dotted line.

@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 3 жыл бұрын
what I found works for me is to do two tees at a time, so when the stitched lines are gathered by pulling the threads, there is more fabric to be gathered.... when I did single tees, there was not enough fabric to gather and have it lay flat so I could see my lines to dye .... also, my preference was not to pull the thread completely tight, but instead pull them enough to gather the pattern, but still lay mostly flat ..... here is an old album but it has many photos of my stitching process : facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.4697029064004&type=3
