For the people claiming this is not a hackamore: the nose piece is called the bosal, the whole thing is called a hackamore deriving from the Spanish word jaquima. There is also a contraption called a mechanical hackamore because of it's metal leverage construction, which is not a true hackamore.

Is it a good idea to start a horse in a hackamore

Im thinking of training my standardbred to a hackamore due to the fact he hates bits in his mouth and focuses more on messing with the bit then actually what he is being asked to do. Would this be a wise thing to do

Of course! At least it's worth a try. But don't pay a fortune for the fanciest thing out there. Try getting something used, at least at first, and go with the simplest and most basic. Some horses go just fine in a halter, and stop and turn when asked. There are many different kinds of bitless bridles, and some are as bad or worse than bits. Do NOT use any kind of mechanical hackamore. Anything with even a little bit of leverage is out. No matter what you start with or progress to, the horse needs to be taught what you are asking for. They need tobe worked with and rewarded. Do you understand training with pressure and release? If not, Google it, and READ the longest and most detailed explanations of it. There isn't a single KZbin video that explains it properly. YOU HAVE TO READ several different detailed explanations of it to understand it properly, then use it to teach your horse what you are asking with any bitless bridle or other system, like a Dr Cooks, Nalantia, bosal, rope and halter, or a neck rope. Dr Cook's bridle is bad, and Nalantia can be bad. Use a simple side pull if you can, or a bosal like in the the video. You can make a side pull from a rope halter fairly easily.

Training my 10 yr old Paint to a Hackamore now. When he trots, his head just goes up, and he gets a bit out of control. How do I keep his head down? Maybe my rein is too tight?

Yes you should mostly ride a hackamore on a loose rein. Try bending him down gently when he speeds up. As far as his head going up, that will likely take care of itself after he gets more comfortable with the hackamore.

I totally agree with that advice! Do plenty of groundwork throughout the process, and give them time to get used to it before deciding there is a problem, changing stuff on them, or introducing even more stuff into the mix.

Will only run away in the traditional hackamore or rope halter if you do not properly prepare the horse.

Preparation is key in all horse endeavors! We always HAVE TO prepare them, and to set then up for success, so that they will understand and want to do what's asked ! ! ! If we turn it into an unpleasant experience even just once, they could be resistant forever. They are remarkably forgiving, but you still don't want to trigger that reaction.

Here is yet another child who has watched 3 or 4 videos trying to pose as an expert. The bosal is the original hackamore! The long shank, metal, torture devices came much later on.
