CI Surfboards

Күн бұрын

The CI Mid is a modern-classic design resulting from a fun collaboration with Devon Howard, a southern California surfer that has spent the past two decades riding and helping refine boards of this genre.
Inspired by the clean, longer-railed lines drawn by traditional eggs and single-fins, the CI Mid infuses that vibe with the crispness, sensitivity, and freedom made possible by modern features synonymous with Merrick design principles. Boasting a moderate midlength template with low entry rocker and foam forward for ease of paddle and effortless trim speed, the CI Mid scoots, squirts and swivels thanks to contemporary features like double-barrel concave, graduated rocker, and hard, slightly tucked rails through and off the tail.
A reliable all-arounder that flies over the flatter, smaller stuff, the CI Mid really stands apart from other midlength designs in shoulder-high to nearly double overhead point surf, where surfers are able to lay down flowy, arcing turns with total confidence, speed, and control.
The minimalist logo is out of the Channel Islands Archives-a handmade lam Al put on his boards in the early '70s. And all CI Mids are stocked with high quality, colorful resin craftsmanship (6-4oz. decks with 6oz. bottoms). We've also designed an all-new custom 2+1 fin template for this board with our neighbors and friends at True Ames Fins in Goleta, California.
CI Mid 2 + 1 Fins
As we know, fins can make or break any surfboard. For the CI Mid, we worked closely with SoCal surfer Devon Howard and our friends at True Ames Fins to custom build this 2 + 1 set that enhances our new midlength’s high-performance characteristics, as well as proving to be versatile in a wide range of conditions with just a simple adjustment of the center fin.
Thanks to decades' worth of knowledge, as well as countless rounds of R&D, Devon and True Ames founder Chuck Ames landed on this beautiful, tidy, well-balanced outline with full base and moderate rake that was hand foiled for medium flex-making for a very responsive ride with just the right amount of hold and lift that helps you accelerate through turns. Shaped from clear fiberglass panels, the CI Mid’s 6.5” center box fin is available with either 4” FCS two-tab side bites for medium to bigger sized surfers, or 3.6” for lighter weight riders.
*Note: In the event our CI Mid 2 + 1 fins are not available, we recommend Wayne Rich Power Fin by True Ames in 6.5” with FCS 2-tab 4” Hexcore side bites for medium and bigger surfers, and use 3.7” fiberglass side bites if you are of lighter weight. The second alternative is a 7” Greenough 4-A with FCS 2-tab 4” Hexcore side bites for medium and bigger surfers, and use 3.7” fiberglass side bites if you are of lighter weight.

I’m really digging CI mid and toying between getting a 7.0 or 6.10. Wdyt? I’m 178cm (5ft10) and 75kg. I’ve been surfing for 2 years and wouldn’t consider myself too advance but I was surfing a 6.8 hybrid fish 45L before and can catch waves and go down the line. Lemme know what you think

I'm 6'6" 205 and ride the 7'6" though I could have gone down to the 7'2" and been just as stoked. The board paddles like a dream and gets into anything super early and it has endless glide. At your weight and experience, I'd say get the 6'8" or 6'10". Keep your fish (mine is a Firewire Seaside)for a grovler knee-waist high days and when it gets nice, go to the mid-length. The board can be surfed in mush but it doesn't turn on until clean waist high and then its a dream. Those boards for me constitute a perfect quiver. 2 boards and I can surf any conditions that I want to paddle into.

@cisurfboards
@cisurfboards 4 жыл бұрын
The board's bottom entry at nose is close to flat but a slight vee, and gets more pronounced a third into the board from nose, and from there concave on each of side of stringer runs through the fins. Some people call this Spiral Vee bottom, some double barrel. Same thing. The stringer is a tiny bit higher than rail line you have a nice ball bearing feel which you can see how easy the board goes rail to rail and redirects with minimal effort.

Hi, im about 171 cm tall and weight about 75 kg, 45 years old. My homebreak is generally between 2 ft to 5 ft left point break. Been surfing for 4 years now during surf seasons ( 4 months in a year). Id consider myself a beginner going to intermediate ( i can surf open faced waves). My current board is a 9ft log but id like to go a bit shorter to do glides ams turns like how Devon is doing. What sort of dimensions do you recommend?

not sure about the exact dimms on the 6'10 ci that dev's riding, but that board looks like the call in point waves, especially for older folks coming down from logs. I've got a 7'2 x 21.75 x 2.6 egg that's butter in clean, 2' - 6' surf. for your setup, 6'10 - 7'2 x 20 - 22 x 2.5 - 2.75 is what i'd look into. (i'm partial to left points - shoot me an invite, bud!)

@@johnvirata Hi John, thanks for pointing this out. It might appear that way from a distance, but there are some notable differences and they ride differently, as your video demonstrates. The Mini is an awesome board but some differences are that it has a rolled bottom entry into vee, its rails have a tucked edge and the dims are a little wider than on our Mid, making for a slightly different curve. The Howard Special Mini also has a lot more rocker, and the rails are very tucked in. The CI Mid has double barrel, lower rocker, hard shortboard rails and in general is a spicier faster feeling ride. The outline for the Mid is pulled from a board we made in the 70s called the Huevo Caliente. We will share a video shortly that will share more on that.

These boards are copies of speed eggs that have been made in San Diego for a number of years. There are much better outlines, rails, and bottom contours that have been refined for almost 20 years by San Diego shapers like Bill minard and Gary hannel. Not to mention a board that would be done with a great glass job for less than 1k. Go get a better surfboard for cheaper from San Diego, Channel Islands wasn’t making anything like these in the past 20 years, how should they know what a quality egg feels like. P.s. speed eggs go really well in bigger surf 10-15 ft because they act like a better gun that gets into the wave early.
@cisurfboards
@cisurfboards 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for chiming in, those are amazing shapers who I know personally. There are many great options out there, and if we are to start a list together I bet we could go on for pages. This is our take on an egg inspired design. Speed Egg would be an accurate description, or Hybrid. Today people calling them midlegnths ( a catch all category that seems to stem back about 20 years ago in surf shops). This is an outline of Al's from 70s called Huevo Caliente. The bottom is a modern take of his tri plane hull which came from Greenough edge board designs. We didn't trace or copy anything that wasn't ours, but I can understand why you'd say that as I know the category and the SD culture well. If you are in a shop and have a chance to put one under your arm you can judge for yourself if it lives up to your Speed Egg standards. We are proud of this design we did in-house here with our team or surfers and board builders, we worked hard on it. And yes, indeed it does great in surf that size which as you know happens quite rarely from Concepcion to I.B. Hope you are slaying the bass. So for now we just have these micro waves to share. Hope to have something better soon here. Thanks again - Devon Howard
@Morlouda
@Morlouda 4 жыл бұрын
Definitely agree. Stick to what you know channel islands and lost! Both manufacturers are great at what they do, popping out shortboards and grovelers for a decent price most people can afford. But when it comes to midlengths you guys are just trying to steal market share. I should know, I just bought a Lost Crowd Killer and I am really disappointed. It looked great in the store but after riding it I found out the outlines are all wrong and the weight is in all the wrong places. Do yourselves a favor and buy a midlength from an actual midlength or longboard shaper. Also this video of Devon Howard ripping on this board is very misleading. He's perfected this board and can surf it like a pro in anything. The shape of the one he's riding in this video is too thin and not enough volume for an average surfer to catch 2-4 foot waves, and as he says himself the egg shape is made for overhead waves. It's not a one board quiver killer like the big surfboard companies are marketing it. And if you go longer like a 7'2" to get that extra volume it actually makes the problem worse because now you definitely just have a gun.
