Tap o’ Noth Permaculture - a Food Forest Farm

Күн бұрын

In this weeks video we take a look at wonderful Saskatoon berry and how we are planting it in our food forest market garden.
FOOD FOREST BERRIES
2024 sees work begin in establishing a small scale, permaculture designed family soft fruit enterprise that will rub shoulders with our other on-farm businesses. We aren't trying to compete with or replicate the large soft fruit commercial farms that are common place here in Scotland and around the world but showcase a small scale, ecologically diverse model that will work with our family farm's values and needs both economically and environmentally. Our sales will be direct to the consumer, working with our local community via a Community Supported Agriculture model (CSA), either through weekly fruit shares or by offering a pick your own/U pick. The berries grown in the market garden will add to the top fruit - apples and plums - that we have already been growing in food forest systems for nearly a decade.
About Tap o' Noth Farm:
Hi, we're James and Rosa! Welcome to Tap o' Noth Farm, an 8 acre permaculture designed food forest farm/homestead in Aberdeenshire, NE Scotland. We practice home scale to small farm scale agroforestry and regenerative agriculture methods to produce organic fruit and vegetables, raise dairy goats for all our raw milk needs, geese to graze our silvopasture and coppice systems and laying hens, moved around in a Chickshaw, for an abundance of eggs.
Our videos aren't 'how to's' - more videos to give a glimpse into our lifestyle and hopefully inspire you to bring aspects of what you see into your own life.
HEDGE + FURROW'S OFF-GRID SHEPHERDS HUT
Come and stay on the farm in our traditional shepherds hut, complete with pizza oven and wood fired outdoor bath, set amongst fields, trees and beside a beautiful pond.
You can book through AirBnB here - airbnb.com/h/h...

Great timing, this morning I was out pruning my gooseberries and black currants plus saving the better branches for propagating. This afternoon I’m going to try stool layering the honey berries and elderberries for the first time so that in 2 years or so I should have a bunch more for the food forest. I don’t have any Saskatoon berries yet but they look like they would be a great addition. Enjoying your channel ! 👍

We planted some a couple of years ago and they've been very productive. Fast growing, high yields, and ours are just generic seedling varieties so yours should do even better!

I'm from Prince Albert which is about 150km north of Saskatoon which is the largest city in my province of Saskatchewan. They grow like weeds around here. lol I have four saskatoon plants in my back yard. They need a lot of water in late May and early June. If they get it then you will surely have a bounty. They are better made into a syrup as their seeds are coarse as well as the skins.

We live in Pacific NW Oregon, and when we travel to British Columbia I love getting saskatoon preserves or jam. Good luck with your plantings. Should be very tasty in a few years.

My favourite tree in the back garden is our Saskatoon. Beautiful creamy white blossom, gorgeous autumn colour, and the berries , which taste rather like raspberries.

I’m sad to hear that Saskatoon berries have made it past Canada. I liked the exclusivity. I’m extremely happy that other places get to enjoy this little purple berry. Frozen is best. I know most of you won’t be able to spot a leaf on a drive through the wilds of if it’s origin, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia, I know I can. I know several places of wild growth. I’m happy and mad.

i have multiple variants , including smokey, and there are some that i found in forest that aren't any nammed variety, they all bloom at the same time pretty much. There are some differences in bloom time, but that mostly come form different places they grow in.Varieties differ in how they grow, how tall they are, how bushy, how may root runners they have, how many fruits but not in time of blooming, not that i noticed anyways.
