Tap o’ Noth Permaculture - a Food Forest Farm

Күн бұрын

In this 4th episode following our work in establishing our small scale berry enterprise, James prepares the plot and plants out the raspberries.
FOOD FOREST BERRIES
2024 sees work begin in establishing a small scale, permaculture designed family soft fruit enterprise that will rub shoulders with our other on-farm businesses. We aren't trying to compete with or replicate the large soft fruit commercial farms that are common place here in Scotland and around the world but showcase a small scale, ecologically diverse model that will work with our family farm's values and needs both economically and environmentally. Our sales will be direct to the consumer, working with our local community via a Community Supported Agriculture model (CSA), either through weekly fruit shares or by offering a pick your own/U pick. The berries grown in the market garden will add to the top fruit - apples and plums - that we have already been growing in food forest systems for nearly a decade.
About Tap o' Noth Food Forest Farm:
Hi, we're James and Rosa! Welcome to Tap o' Noth Farm, an 8 acre permaculture designed food forest farm/homestead in Aberdeenshire, NE Scotland. We practice home scale to small farm scale agroforestry and regenerative agriculture methods to produce organic fruit and vegetables, raise dairy goats for all our raw milk needs, geese to graze our silvopasture and coppice systems and laying hens, moved around in a Chickshaw, for an abundance of eggs.
Our videos aren't 'how to's' - more videos to give a glimpse into our lifestyle and hopefully inspire you to bring aspects of what you see into your own life.
HEDGE + FURROW'S OFF-GRID SHEPHERDS HUT
Come and stay on the farm in our traditional shepherds hut, complete with pizza oven, wood fired outdoor bath and sauna, set amongst fields, trees and beside a beautiful pond.
You can book through AirBnB here - airbnb.com/h/h...

Looking forward to seeing how everything grows this summer, including your little helper ! Here in the mountains of Idaho (zone 5a) we had a great harvest of yellow raspberries and red currants last year most of the other berries just did ok. We’re phasing out the blueberries and getting more honey berries this spring, they just seem to be more durable and don’t require any special soil.

TIL that you got different varietes of raspberries like earlies and autumn! Amazing. Just curious when do the early ones become available for picking? And also - do you have a specific place you source these from in Scotland? Thanks! Great vid btw!

Are you planning on adding any companion planting? I see alliums mentioned along with chervil, turnips, and yarrow. Just curious. Great efforts in getting these fields done.

Thanks for taking us along! Why do you have to cut down the raspberrys though?

Thanks! It encourages stronger growth. Autumn varieties ideally need cut down every season and summer fruiting have last years canes removed.

Forgot to ask in my earlier comment but do you have a plan on deterring birds from eating the berries at all or are raspberries quite good at protecting themselves from the birds? I had a small bush in the garden and was surprised that most of them escaped the attention of the birds but they were pretty well hidden and covered by their own thorns.
